Back in My Homeland

Like a man possessed we fight 'neath cool exteriors a raging fire burns, day and night We have nowhere to turn no matter how we yearn to parlez vous francais or habla ingles Never quite accepted by the whole world rejected All our efforts reproved ever on the move ... I squirm and fidget 'cos I never quite fit in Now, back in Israel with God I dwell I know who and what I am back in my homeland

You and I are neck and neck regarding total poems written. The only difference is mine are 2,000 more that yours are.

Hey, James! Thanks for the clever comment. In the 'race' for the finish line, it'll either be a photo finish or an oil painting. ~ Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk

What I mean is this: The church is distinctly American. The synagogue, not-so-much. Outside of Israel, a Jew may be in a land, but he/she is never of that land.

Hurts my heart to read this, Gershon. Jewish people like any other people, should feel comfortable and safe wherever they live, work, go to school, synagogue, go out anywhere, travel to. Like I wrote the other day, my heart is utterly broken. Shalom u'vrakha ~

Well, we're used to it... although those Jews under 40 in America were not prepared for the depth of the hatred against them, I'm sure... Sooner or later, though, they might as well see it for what it was, is, and will always be -- til the Messiah comes. :) gw

You have me wondering is he back in Israel or is this about those who are going back to fight or is it about feeling like one doesn't fit in in anyplace except home. I enjoyed reading your lines and it fits in with today's political happenings. I hope some kind of peace settlement happens soon, but we know it will only be temporary if it does. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us and for dropping by my page. Sara K

Truth be told: It is about me, Sara... Me, as representative of any and every Jew. None of us ever quite fits in anywhere in the world --- except in Israel, our home. :) gw

a timely and poignant poem, dear Gershon. I'm drawn to the bravery of the man who doesn't quite fit in. I find that reality sad, so sad. Thanks for sharing such insightful and powerful poetry. Have a splendid day, Sara

The 'man who doesn't quite fit in,' Sara, is me. I, a Jew, like every Jew, never quite fit in anywhere -- except the Land of Israel, my home, my people's home. ~ Gershon

Topical and poignant. Israel's breathtaking story is long and documented. Shalom, Lobo. :o)

Even with all the breath-'taking' moments in Israel's story, the Jewish People is still breathing! Thanks, Arlo.
