Aurora of the Republic - 250 Years in One Breath
Written: July 3rd, 2026, for a contest sponsored by William Kelii Kekaula
Quote: "One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, one nation, evermore!" — By Oliver Wendell Holmes
*******************
Daybreak still cradles us
in a mystic silence,
and even after two hundred fifty Julys
an aurora rises from the republic’s bones —
akin to a beacon,
a bright, breathing glow of ardor
from those who once embodied freedom
through flame and chime, smoke and panic.
Their tremendous mettle still awaits us —
their power pressed deep into silent clay,
their names now whispers, scattered trinkets,
woven in welkin wide and shifting blue.
Ardent spirits, hemmed, swaying in darkness,
yet still they marched, still they stood,
liberty ringing as a resonant aria —
a clear, calling lyric beyond fear.
History is a palimpsest of sacrifice—
a labyrinthine past we winnow
for meaning.
Boots once trudged through mud and frost,
hands once shook with weariness,
hearts once broke asunder
so ours could beat freely.
Yet striving rose as eternal mettle—
a radiant, flawed, fiercely human glow,
of devotion in a flawed generation.
Modern life dazzles, vibrant and bright,
bursting with creativity, freshened voices
that crisscross and scan the digital sky.
Freedom morphs, turns, reshapes itself —
honored resilience forging fresh forms
in spoken words and rising songs,
coded lines and painted visions.
This vibrant tapestry imbues our days,
securing a steadfast civic spirit
from the dust of obsolescence.
We are intrepid flâneurs and inventors,
carrying hope through the evolving dark,
that our art, our words, our choices
might herald a raw and golden century.
We elicit ariose, rising expressions
within the nation’s broad and shifting quilt —
each chosen voice an elfin, burning ember
dropped in the vast, molten story
still being written by our hands.
Are we willing to rise, to vow our loyalty?
A solemn pledge: to love our country.
Fireworks bloom as ethereal flowers tonight
above sycamores and quiet roofs —
not a mere vacuum simulacrum,
not a fleeting, fatuous boast.
But a slow requiem and sudden rebirth,
a whispered wind and brilliant blaze —
an eternal vow to honor the past
while shaping the future
with a spirited, rising manner.
So let the sky turn amber,
let the anthem ring mellifluous,
let the wild night be ours —
for we inherit not only the heavy sacrifices
of those who stepped before us,
but also their paradoxical legacy
the truth that freedom is always becoming,
always fragile,
always worth the song.
And now —
after two hundred fifty Julys,
with auroras still rising from the republic’s bones —
will we dare to press onward,
for another two hundred fifty more?
