August

August Along the backroads black-eyed susans snooze Unfazed and unaffected by August’s humid hand Growing tall with Queen Anne’s Lace beside roadside stands, Utopias of sweet white corn, farm fresh beans and blackberries, Shaded by shadows of leafy walnut trees, a dusty road romance, Tabernacles of tranquility in summer’s fertile siestas.

Ahhhh..It is such a wonderful time of year. If I close my eyes and heard your poem, all my senses would come alive. My birthday is in August and my husband used to live on a farm that still stands with his 95 year old mother. Your poem describes his old farm road and the 2 of us, as we walk it's back road each summer. I want to jump into your poem, it would be like entering his old farm home.

Hi Marikate! What precious memories we share. There is truly something special about the experience of a back road and a country home in the summer. My grandparents had a summer house on an island where I spent hours picking blackberries with my grandmother, going to the local county fair, climbing apple trees or walking on the beach looking for limpets! I believe this place fostered my imagination and has left me with amazing memories. Thank you for sharing your memories! Warmed my heart even in autumn! Blessings!

My Dearest Rhyme Time Friend, I'm enthralled with the rich vibrant imagery of your August poem. The spirit of late summer is captured with enchanting verse and lovely strings of alliteration. Such a serene and sweet scene unfolds upon the poetic page. Your splendid imagery brings me there, "Along the backroads (where) black-eyed susans snooze", with the ease of a summer breeze. Congratulations for your excellent win in Andrea's contest. Warmest wishes sent on the waning scents of summer.. ~Susan

My Dearest Rhyme Time Friend, summer has flown like waves on the shore and I am, just now, catching up with dear friends! This poem was born out of lazy, summer afternoons wandering back roads and exploring roadside stands. So much fun to both remember then put those magical moments into a poem. Funny, the memories and images almost wrote themselves for they are so vivid and truly a precious part of my summers. And, it is always more fun to explore with a friend, sweet poetry sis! Thank you for your beautiful message. Warms my heart like summer sunshine. Sending you many warm blessings to warm your heart as autumn spreads her wings over the earth!

I love how skillfully you wove this together, Sam, especially since 'U' words can be difficult, but 'unfazed' and 'utopias' work so well here, I can feel the warm sweetness of an August afternoon~

Thank you so much Michelle. It was fun to weave both of those words into this poem. They just seemed to fit! I love how you describe a lazy August afternoon - "warm sweetness." Blessings of summer joy to you! I can't believe August is almost half over! Here come Indian summers in the NW!
