At First Glance
AT FIRST GLANCE
At first glance
I was laughing
at the news story,
a chimp with
the name of my ex,
rips the face off of a lady
and almost a year later the
former owner of the chimp dies
But as I watched the story unfold,
I was overwhelmed by the power
of the human spirit,
what endurance and capacity for
strength it holds
that is so often
left untapped.
The injured lady did lose her face
her eyesight,
both of her hands
and she now lives
in an assisted living village.
Also sounds like she's still
on a respirator,
by her labored breathing.
Yet she still has the
room in her heart to forgive
the private owner of the chimp
and join society without a face,
to attend her daughter's graduation.
The strength of her character,
her will to move on with her life
and her bravery
is captivating to me.
My heart goes out
to this woman
and my prayers
go out to her too.
My hopes are that
society embraces
this beautiful woman
and treats her with
the compassion she
is so worthy of.
