As They Flee
As They Flee
As they flee, those families
Grasping onto one another,
Have given up that extra valise,
(All the news reporters note)
To keep arms free
To carry
Babes and pets —
The beloved of the truly
Civilized — ready
To leave their cars jammed
By their leaving; choosing
To go on for miles,
To go on, as refugees
Walking the many miles,
Abandoning the material things, and
Rather to bring what shared their beds,
Spoke to their hearts —
No matter the weight —
What sings in their souls,
Ancestral dreams and values
Passed along,
Giving a strength to each, with
The prayers, the poetry,
And supporting reach
Of the rest of
An alarmed and watching humanity,
Not blind to to their innocent flight
Or the ravaging of the guilty.
