"Life is a revolt, a paradox against the fundamental rule of Nature to trend toward equilibrium, which is at the maximum of entropy (i.e. disorder) and the minimum of free energy. Life goes against this trend it tends to decrease its entropy (builds and maintains structure and order and increases its free energy). Life is made possible by order, structure, and a pattern, which is the opposite of entropy. The main aim of living things is to conserve and transmit this order and structure through reproduction. But, this reversal against the trend to decay is costly and requires continual capture and expenditure of energy. Plants, the auotrophs, use solar energy to build structure into organic molecules such as sugar and cells and to create energy reserves to survive and maintain their structure. We, as heterotrophs, feed on negative entropy by extracting the energy built into the structure of organic molecules by the auotrophs, the plants." Derived from: "WHAT IS LIFE?" by Erwin Shrödinger, First published in 1944.
