And That's the Way It Was
Happy thoughts we rarely hear,
As people make their opinions loud and clear.
Too much hate in this world today,
And children even have forgotten how to play.
A simple life has gotten so complex,
Without our cell phone, how can we text?
We have gotten in such a hurry we don’t take time to look,
Or maybe we just don’t care if that person we are dealing with is a crook.
Stores are too big and there is no ambience to be found,
Just the coldness of greed it is everywhere around.
Children dictating to their parents just what they must buy,
And all I can do is comment to myself then walk away and sigh.
Somewhere back down the road we must have taken a wrong turn,
Or burned downed the woodpiles where we took our children out to learn.
A sixteen year old driving a brand new car is hard for me to understand,
When I was that age if you could afford a junker, you were in demand.
Maybe I’ve outlived my time and I shouldn’t complain,
But to me life had more meaning when it was simple and plain.
People took the time to stop and chat,
And that’s how friendships are formed and I like that.
