Always With Me Always With You
They say you never forget your first love, and I guess I never did.
You were so grown up and I was just a kid.
I felt so proud walking by your side.
You telling everyone I was your girl, with pride.
We went everywhere together; everyone knew us as a pair.
I sure did love you. When I was with you, I didn’t have a care.
Other girls would chat to you and try to get between
Nothing could split us up even though I was only sixteen.
You wanted me to come with you to that wedding interstate.
It was the marriage of your very good mate.
I had to work, and so I couldn’t come, I had to stay.
If I was with you, you might not have been killed that day.
I would have stopped you from crossing that road.
That huge truck had such a heavy load.
It couldn’t stop in time.
That day it took your life, but you were mine.
I waited for your return.
My eyes began to burn.
When I heard the news, I just couldn’t cope.
The end of happiness, the end of all my hope.
You became my secret love, and I love you to this day.
Why I can’t mention you, I really cannot say.
I visit your grave sometimes and the places we used to go.
But it’s my only secret that my dear husband doesn’t know.
He just wouldn't understand that I could love you too.
Knowing about you, would just make him feel blue.
I am careful not to let my teardrops start.
As I keep the poem that you wrote me, deep inside my heart.
Yes, you are my secret and it’s so very true.
