Why does the ocean instantly appear more beautiful when you admire its grace? Why does the timid butterfly draw near your hand, as you adore its wings' soft lace? Why do those moments racing through the year slow to a halt as you look in my eyes? Why do my life's distractions disappear when your warm hand and mine become allies? When you gaze at the bright orb of the night why does that old moon speed my heartbeat's thrum? Why does the future no more speak of fright as you, with optimism, bid it come? 'Tis myst'ry all, my love, that such as I should be the one to ask these questions, "why?" // for Janet, my lovely wife and soul mate for 36 years // written 10 Oct 2020

Hello John The first line took me back to the Carpenters' song 'Close to you' with its opening 'Why do birds suddenly appear, everytime you are near...'. This is a beautiful tribute to your wife and it's not even Valentine's day!

Wendy, I thought of that song too (after I wrote it and read it back)! What a beautiful love song that is by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, a mainstay of 70's radio. Thank you for the lovely review.

What an ecstatic love story - so tender so warm yet passionate as the heart races and loving couples become allies - why, i'm sure because this love seems so true that there is no need for words, her hand in yours says it all. Good luck in the contest John dear friend, a beautiful poem. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Thanks for the fave and the sharp eye. I fixed the error you caught, but the sponsor has already read the poem, so if I get docked, I get docked. I need to be a better proofreader! Grateful for your generous review, Andrea.

Thank you, Connie. A love of nature is a big part of our common ground... flowers, full moon rises, watching the ocean waves, butterflies. Loved your comment. Hugs ~ John

Thank you, Tom. I'm so grateful this is not a fiction write. I got the winning lottery ticket when I married my bride 35 years ago. ~ John

John, you have so beautifully addressed the age old question of lovers - how could I be so lucky to have your love! The image of two hands becoming "allies" is very special and I really like the parallelism. Best wishes and blessings my friend, for the contest!

Thank you for your wonderful comment, Sam. I'm in awe of the gift I have received with my bride's love and acceptance. I'm glad you liked the word "allies"; as soon as I penned it I felt that should be the title. Blessings to you ~ John

The mystery of love, so beautifully expressed - my favorite is the part of optimistically seeking the future. Yes, we should be allies with our better half, that is what makes it so special :) (do you show any of these to your wife - she would probably be over the moon!)

Thank you, Michelle. Yes, love is a mystery, and the sense of awe that comes from being given that gift is nearly overwhelming. Easy to see why poets have been writing of love for millennia. And yes, Janet is a very grateful recipient of these love poems. Enjoy your day ~ John
