Alibis

Beauty cries in love's demise, when you make your alibis.
All my sadness fills my eyes, when you make your alibis.

Caring thoughts your voice implies, but the words are only lies
still you sing sweet lullabies, when you make your alibis.

Broken hearts will soon arise, different song but same reprise,
though your stories you'll revise, when you make your alibis.

Warm emotions, no goodbyes, loving feelings life denies,
hate within beguiling guise, when you make your alibis.

In your soul your heart implies, tenderness, I realize,
willingly you still chastise, when you make your alibis.

With grim desire R.J. sighs, as hope is lost, still he tries,
Within his heart each dream dies, when you make your alibis.

Pashang was telling me that ghazals typically dwell around love, spiritual or more melancholy topics --- I wasn't originally aware of subject matter specifications, and just thought you could write them about anything really. The ones I end up writing somehow end up becoming more reflective or somber ... not sure why that is, perhaps it's just the nature of the refrain? And yes, I was quite impressed by the talent ... especially for a form very few seem to try on the Soup!

Hey Timothy, not everything but most things I write tend to be on the darker side even if I write about cherry lollipops somewhere in the poem there will be a line like, "...from the cherry lollipop a viscous red drop drips slow from anguished lips as the blade moves deep across her wrist...," haha, and of course the dark chuckle has to accompany it. The ghazal I wrote for your contest was the first one I've done. My understanding of the form is that it is a poem written to give to someone you are attracted too which is the reason for adding your name, kind of like a "not so secret" admirer. I don't really write them because I hate putting my name in anything.

Thanks PD, and I hope your Easter is wonderful, be careful of the chocolate bunnies. They are sneaky creatures that will entice you to eat them then make you feel bad when there ears are gone.

Congrats James! I don't believe I've read a ghazal with this much added rhyme involved ... that is quite impressive, if I do say so myself. Excellently written. Thanks for entering my contest!

Hi Timothy, though my subject matter is rather dark for a ghazal, I found it to be an enjoyable write. Thanks so much for hosting the contest. You have some wonderful writes here. A resounding success I would say.
