Alfred the Great

Alfred the Great
As a king was first rate;
He was famed for his brains
And made peace with the Danes.

For everybody's benefit, I will explain who Alfred the Great was. He was a Saxon king of Wessex (pre-Norman invasion part of southwest England) from 871 to 899 AD. You have described him well with your clerihew.

Jack, I didn't know much about Afred the Great, but this is a fun clerihew! Perfect use of the form and I got a giggle thinking he was famous for his "brains." Did he really have more than one? LOL Most folks I know have only one and rarely use it. Best wishes in PD's clerihew contest! Love, Carolyn
