I knew an uncle once and he died of alcoholism. You brought up such a powerful message through your words Regina, despite their compassion, goodness and grace it ate them. Sad but honest. Congratulations on your win :)

Congratulations on your winning poem, Regina! Your title caught my attention. Like many, I can also relate. My step-dad died from cirrhosis. Five months later my dad died from the same. Three years ago, my mom had a liver transplant. Alcoholism is a terrible disease. Your poem reminds us that these can be people with good qualities despite their illness. Thanks for sharing :) Rhonda xx

Regina, I too lost an uncle and aunt to the effects of alcohol upon their bodies. Your tribute is very gracious and remembers these dear ones in the positive light of their generous giving natures. Congratulations on your top win, my friend ~ John

Reminiscent of the prostitute with the heart of gold... Sages wrote: Just the whole of the person favorably. If you look at the whole person, you will find (many) positives... Blessings, Gershon

I have lost family too because of this. There is a strong drinking culture coming out of Appalachia.

It is so sad they could not overcome their demons, but were still generous and good - a lovely entry for the contest..

That also touches me deeply. When my previous marriage turned into a storm with no sails, I too took to the botlle of drowing myself in booze. 13 years onwards I am addicted to life (and Coke Zero) and happily married again. It is sad that your aunt and uncle could not give to themselves, what they deserved. Kind and sober wishes, Kai

So many reasons that some inately good people turn to drink. Some don't feel appreciated or loved. Some are angry. So many reasons but the bad part is it never works because when they sober up the problem is still there and they don't know what to do with it. A very touching piece. God Bless, JB
