Agony

Sometimes they come out of nowhere These shadows that nibble my soul Whose teeth rip away at my tenderest parts Leaving scars too unsightly to show. The tears fall quietly from anguished eyes That would rather be blinded than see The ones I had helped from out of the pit Now tearing all good out of me. My stomach teems with caustic churns That betrayal injects in your core I sip of God's promise of healing and peace But it burns even more than before. Name just one time I withheld love Or sowed seeds of malice or ire Yet still I stand guilty in judgmental mobs Condemned to the unworthy's fire. But the battle's not lost, hope lingers on Though people are shallow and cold My spirits are broken, my heart shattered, yet still Jesus loves and attends to my soul.
