again and again

I was working at the market when the news of you first hit town
with you came a silence, your boots on the pavement became my only sound
what started as glimpses of you in the light
soon after I was haunted by your face in the night
I waited for a moment when your eyes would reach mine
you had me imprisoned and you were the crime
I took a walk around the valley and searched for you there
wrote a hundred different letters that soon I would tear
but you saw me that night walking out of the close
asked how I was, I nearly choked
it’s like you froze time
and you gave me new vision
things I’d never even glanced at, lit up bad decisions
I couldn’t shake off infatuation with you
I had felt so used up and you made me brand new
your face had been etched into each waking thought
my head was so full of everything I’d been taught
and all these years later, you still live in my head
I still wake up in the early hours, reach to your side of the bed
that you never even slept in
yet there’s all this empty space
that you once took up, smile wiped from my face
and even if I now know, not to wait around
there’s a part of me that still yearns
for you to return
with everything that you’ll learn
you’ll repaint this town
fill my life with your sound
pick up where we left off, really turn things around
because I’m still at the market
everything’s just the same
I’m ready to hear of you,
again and again
