Afternoon Birds
Afternoon Birds
Babies, your tummies know it’s 5 o’clock, and so
Fill them please with many seeds,
And fill me with your trills and songs.
Then fly and sing on sunset wings
To perch and dream.
Let not the night bring
Any fright to you while slumb’ring.
No feline’s hiss or carnal wish
By any predator
Or man-made thing.
Let dove and crow
Find rows together in mumbled sleep.
From twilight’s dark, keep
Still your spark, to feast and sing
‘Til dawn of morning.
