After the Storm
We would run through the rain not as children
on whose skin the droplets cling, but as thieves
stealing through a steamy midday's night.
Many storms were weathered in this way
as our innocence, like sugar, melted down
to join the growing puddle of our family's tears.
We would have vanished into nothingness
save for the sun that burst through a heavy nimbus-night
to lead us from the darkness into light.
