a wilted rose-Lei

is love to be a wilted rose
to fade beneath the winter snows

to pierce itself with its own thorn
its beauty hide in death to mourn

i watch it bloom from tiny seeds
a spark of lust from passion bleeds

unfold itself within a kiss
then fade within the dying bliss

Poignant, classical 'Lay' -- the tension between current beauty and inevitable fade, making the beauty all the more precious. Congrats, Sandy! Warm wishes, Gershon

Sandra, your meter, rhyme, and message are perfection. I love "to pierce itself with its own thorn"; such an apt description of the vulnerability we feel in love. Like a rose, beautiful but intimidating. Well done and congrats ~ John

Congrats Sandy on your first place finish. This poem was beautiful and a little sad but that rose I am sure will bring smiles back when spring arrives.

Absolutely beautiful and just curious, aren't you the poet who says she doesn't rhyme very well? Hmmm, obviously must have been someone else. :) Wonderfully written Sandy, I loved everything about this. Best wishes in the contest.
