A Tragic Love Story

O Romeo O Romeo How foolish it was of you Why you could have had sweet Rosaline And a secret lover too What madness possessed you To drink poison and to die Leaving Juliet to suffer Stabbing wounds of suicide O Juliet O Juliet What waste of precious life For few moments of passion Was it worth the sacrifice What madness possessed you Why give your heart to him When you could have had more Romeos Than all the flowers of Spring O Romeo O Juliet Your tragic love story is written with regrets At least it brought an end to your feuding families The Montagues and Capulets

Nice one. I live 30 minutes from Stratford upon Avon and a member of the RSC! The waste of lives because of madness called love!

Yes, very tragic it was. I love your poem though, and the last stanza gave me a smile.

Your poetic perspective is stirring and superb, Arturo. You’ve captured the spirit of their tragic love story so beautifully and so very elegantly. Warmest wishes always, mon ami.. ~Susan

Thank you Susan...I guess you can say, an inland perspective...a bit of banter on the subjects...Have a lovely Sunday...

Somehow I missed this beauty earlier, Arturo. When I was teaching, my high school students loved "Romeo and Juliet" and I see you know the play well. Sadly, the only upshot was the mending of the feud between the Montagues and Capulets. Very well written! Hugs, Carolyn

There were times I got bored reading...but always admired his writing skills...besides WS...there are many great writers out there...I'll be happy for a morsel of their ability...

Excellent write Arturo. A side of the story many fail to see. The sheer senseless waste of two good lives that could have gotten over their first love and simply moved on and had good lives. Great job here. God Bless, JB

I like your take on this story, especially the line "what madness possessed you". Hard to see alternatives sometimes when you are completely overcome by passion. So many tragedies in its name...

That's true...passion blinds...we need signs along the roads to avoid tragedies...

"What madness possessed you Why give your heart to him When you could have had more Romeos Than all the flowers of youthful Spring" - I have always wondered this also, but what a terrific poem to well-told tale! Great job, Arturo!

Thank you Lyric Man...I recently took a serious look at William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet...and was blown over...and over

I love how you discussed the stupidity of it all. And yet it goes down in history as such a "true love." Tragedy endures!!!

'To be or not to be'. Well I guess she chose to play the tragic heroine rather than go for another. An excellent write Arturo, a fave for me. I love all the Shakespearean works ....Maria Hugs

I prefer Taming of the Shrew for love stories. But my favourite Shakespeare Play, which might be worth your read is The Tempest.

love, love, love Macbeth. But not a love story. Brilliant story, very dark. You must read it. I was introduced to Macbeth at 15years, when my year at school bussed it to the Big Smoke to sit in an adult audience for the first time. For someone who has never been to theatre before, and at such a formative age, it was sheer magic, conversed about it for days after. Well worth the read. Taming of the Shrew - so witty, so true to life, so good. Watch the Richard Burton/Liz Taylor movie if you can find it; sometimes it makes it easier to see the movie or theatre enactment before reading - as Shakespeare is heavy reading, but well worth the immersion. x
