A Toast For the Time
Here, friends, let me say, I went but could not stay
And coming found messages from a few
That let me believe life is more than another day
O poetrysoup friends, what I am going through
Is not polite for a man speak about
But never have I been wasted by such a drought
And yet, by God's design, I still stand
Perhaps just to walk and hold another's hand.
We all have some use in storm or flood
We are not here for ourselves alone. Let me take
Your words for blanket and warm my blood
Your love compasses me on each journey I make.
My heart broke again and again to hear
The songs of childhood, of praise, and of cheer
The sweet companionship in which we sail
Warriors, teachers, griot historians, all hail!
