FIRST PLACE

A Time For Us

He was a bad boy type, a rebel with a leather jacket and Harley Davidson. A handsome face, and easy smile. And he literally swept me off my feet. When he was near I was breathlessly in love, or thought I was. He was a man that my parents would not want for me to love. It began by secret meet ups and we would spend our days and evenings riding his bike, down country roads we would fly. I felt wild and free. a meadow lush green his lips and his whispers sweet . . . a lovely trance dream Our family life was so different, he had none. I lived with my mom and dad and siblings in a nice home on a nice street. His dad was a drunk and I think his mom was too. They did not care if he came home or not. But, he was free of rules and obligations, no one to say no. Part of me envied that. I noticed how women looked at him with lust, and I was proud to be the one in his arms. I felt beautiful and sexy. in the dark we kissed falling into an abyss . . . my soul was weeping For I knew this could not go on, it had no future. I had to let him go. And he had to let me go. It was not that I did not care for him because I did. But, it would never work for us. We came from different worlds. I told him that I could not see him anymore, he got mad then sad. But, I believe that he understood and so we said our goodbye one night under the stars, a goodbye hug and kiss and I walked away. the years have passed by my yesterdays are echoes . . . of love lost in time

Constance, such a beautiful poem expressing a first love and loss. I enjoyed your journey in your wonderful poem. Some relationships are not meant to be but are important parts of our life's journey and lessons learned. Congratulations on your first place win.

Dear Constance, some people are meant to be a season, not a destination. I find most striking is your honesty about the envy. Usually, these stories are just about the romance, but admitting that you craved his lack of rules, even while knowing his home life was a wreck feels very real. It wasn't just him you were attracted to, it was the idea of being untethered. It’s a beautiful, bittersweet look at how we carry those "echoes" with us, even after we’ve built entirely different lives. Funny I rode a Harley and wore a jacket back in the day. Blessings and Congrats, Dear Constance, Daniel

Hi Constance. Your Haibun form is perfect and your lines evoke such a sense of melancholia in me. Walking away is never easy but sometimes it’s the best option. Congratulations on having written such a wonderful winning poem. Hugs.
