A Thief Called Time

A THIEF CALLED TIME

“Time is the thief you cannot banish”
Phyllis McGinley writer 1905-1978

All that live upon this earth
dwell on borrowed time,
for the human race every
single day that passes by
is a payment off an unsecured
loan, that gifted at birth.
While time can be a wondrous friend
beware when of one’s greatest enemy,
waiting for it sometimes an age
when running out, be afraid.
Centuries ago, time became
a science a complex measure
yet never tamed, only caged
as it ticks and tocks away,
when it calls, one’s life becomes
a hired boat sailing
certain to run aground.
But time never ceases
unlike the human body
in need of a good night’s sleep,
as it steals away one third
of everyone’s life time.

This is an excellent poem about time, Harry. You're right, the older we get, the faster it goes. Definitely saved to read again :)

Like the quote and your poem. Not only getting robbed of a third, but as we age the sense of time quickens which I find is more cruel than the theft itself. It's not all bad though, the dreams are often amazing and as I age they become more so.

"a complex measure yet never tamed, only caged"... one great line among many, Harry. Greatly enjoyed your musing on time and our tenuous relationship with it; I feel you've captured its essence perfectly. A fave for me ~ John

Ah if only we could capture the time given to sleep. Sadly some of us would have less to catch than others lol. Well done Harry!

Good thoughts, Harry:... someone told me the theory of relativity is,” Time goes slow when you’re re with your relatives. Ha ha ....seriously, though, all of a sudden it seems to be running out too fast for me. Best, SuZ

Excellent poem Harry. Every moment matters. Once gone, cannot be retrieved again. The quality of time, how we spend it, what we do with it molds our lives. Thanks for sharing :)

Scientists should work on the human body not needing sleep just go into relax mode but still aware, sometimes I just can't wait to hit my pillow other times if I am busy with a poem, time is of no concern to me, but as true as the night and day of life, so is death. Excellent poetry Harry, good luck in the contest. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer

When you think about it Harry some say there is no such thing as time but a man made measurement of now. So true your words are. Another exceptional piece, Harry...
