Notes About The Poem
I was on leave from the Army when I met my wife, Nelly, in Paris just before the French bicentennial of Bastille Day in July 1989. We were sitting near the Sacre Coeur on Montmartre on the 13th, which was when the French shoot off fireworks. Firecrackers literally were popping all around us when she kissed me for the first time.
Later I used to drive from Hahn Airbase, West Germany, to Paris about once a month to see her for a weekend at a time. We married in Paris in Sept 1990, and are still together.
A Soldier's Foreign Woman - Quatern
A Soldier’s Foreign Woman (Quatern 30 April 2014)
She kissed me like never before
While firecrackers burst overhead.
She never had kissed me before—
Kissing her back went to my head.
Intimacy came very fast.
She kissed me like never before.
I wondered would such passion last
Each time I exited her door.
Traveling the road to her door,
Ev’ry five or six weeks or so
She kissed me like never before--
As if to never let me go.
A son was born, then we married
(permission didn’t come before).
The wedding night passed unhurried.
She kissed me like never before.
