A Small Kindness

Pain's ubiquitous, yet we don't feel it:
desensitization is commonplace.
And we sometimes mirror the hypocrite,
who ignores the hurt on a stranger's face.
A homeless beggar can't pay for his meal,
and so the waitress doesn't know what to do.
A small kindness, but I know how I'd feel
so, I offer, "let me get that for you."
I connected with my human feelings;
and shook his hand; he's no less of a man.
Fueled by ambitions without ceilings,
we neglect to show kindness when we can.
A nod, a spare coin, or a friendly smile:
it's all it takes to say yes, I see you.
For they're people, not a computer file;
and grateful for whatever you can do.
