A Small Kindness

Pain's ubiquitous, so we ignore it,
desensitization is commonplace.
And far too often, we're the hypocrite
that ignores despair on a stranger's face.
A poor veteran can't pay for his meal,
and the waitress doesn't know what to do.
So, I offer, "let me get that for you,"
a small kindness, but I know how I'd feel.
I reconnected with my human feelings
and shook his hand; he's no less of a man.
Applauding ambitions without ceilings,
we oft fail to show kindness when we can.
A nod, a spare coin, or a friendly smile
is all it takes to say yes, I see you.
For they're people, not a computer file,
they're grateful for whatever you can do.
