A Single Salty Tear

Came the day he told me he'd found someone new
and I stood frozen in both place and time.
My heart was as cold as the Winter wind that blew
and I recall clouds darkening the afternoon sky.
Raindrops fell, but no tears from my eyes.
I didn't acknowledge a word he'd said. I simply turned
and walked away, numb to feeling anything at all.
It was late in Autumn when my love was spurned.
I envisioned myself as a single salty tear,
one caused by grief that had spilled unnoticed.
I was lying perched on the cheek of a mournful clown,
whose smile had been painted on, upside down.
I was hoping to leave my sorrow behind
after I'd fallen into the dirt and buried in the ground.
