A Pause In Life

Often, I used to daydream about taking time off for a few months, and leaving the world behind. Not going to work five days a week? I scoff at the fantasy of ignoring the daily grind. It's a nightmare of reality since fever and a cough triggered this pause in life for most of mankind. A hiatus is a brief interval when nothing is amiss, but it's been months without being part of society. Normalcy in life hasn't existed for nearly a year. This long expanse of time is a chasm, a deep abyss. Smiles have disappeared along with prosperity, for an invader has the world living in terrible fear. We mourn the separation from family and friends. Robbed of togetherness, we're dangling on a rope, afraid of the risk of taking an unprotected breath. We're at the mercy of a thief who cannot make amends. What if this deadly disruption makes us lose hope? We need a hiatus from morbidity; a break from death. When from this plague we safely merge Out of the clutches of this scourge Death and illness finally purge We will converge We will converge freed from the time warp open all windows and doors ~ smiles have reappeared ~ ~ ~ February 20, 2021 Hiatus Poetry Contest Chantelle Anne Cooke, Sponsor Rhyme ~ Monotetra ~ Senryu

It is only when we miss routine and normality that we long for it again, we long for our work, our old lives, our schools, even children miss their homework - I can absolutely understand how you won this contest - brilliant poem. Must share this with you - Went overseas for 3 weeks with my 9 year old son, who when we arrived back in South Africa he ran down the steps of the aircraft and kissed the tarmac - oh home home at last Mummy he said. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Your son sounds a wonderful child to realize how important a good home is for him. It's always fun and exciting to get away, but better to get back home. Thanks for sharing that, and your kind remarks, Jennifer.

So much to ponder, Jenna. Your words take us from the "longing" to hope all while emphasizing our desire for this "hiatus" to end. Wonderfully done. Congratulations on your win!

When things in our lives are right again, I hope we appreciate what the last year has done to most of us. Thanks so much, JCB.

It really sucks when an exciting night out is an occasional dinner date, especially for someone like myself whom has many friends and had usually gone out almost every weekend at get-togethers, parties etc. Great write, Jenna. Stay safe and best wishes in the contest. Hugs...Charlie

Thank you, Mark. They can't always end 'happily ever after,' but when they do, it's worth a smile.

Hiya, David. I have lots of time on weekends, thanks to Mr. Covid, to write. Thank you for being so supportive. I'm not sure a mixture of forms will do well in the contest, but that's what my pen seemed to want to do.

God created a garden and man just spoilt it. Incredible has never learned. But how good we are to send a space craft to mars. ~~

and man would most likely spoil that, too, if it was inhabitable. God made other planets for a reason, and when He wants us to know why, it will be made clear. Thank you, Victor.

I so look forward to the day we can put this scourge behind us, this forced hiatus. We have been robbed of a year of our lives. I long to embrace a person and not just hug the wind. Your words hold much truth, Jenna, best of luck in the contest. Hugs.

Thank you, John. It's a year we can never get back, but it's also one that we'll be thankful for, for not having contracted the illness or lost a loved one. I hope we'll all be grateful enough not to take things for granted. Happy weekend. I trust you're ok and the wicked weather has not harmed you.

Hopefully Jenna that day will soon be here but experts have warned if mankind doesn't buck his ideas up on how we look after this planet then we can expect more of the same, but will he learn?, man in all his stupidity would rather ignore the signs. Well written and best of luck. Tom

"Man in all his stupidity..." Unfortunately, your words are too often the truth about the thoughtless habits of mankind. Woe to the Earth Thanks for some of your Saturday time, Tom.
