A Pagan Meets God

My world is filled with many gods
who rule mortals with iron rods.
They are against me, so I think, 
and can kill me with just a wink.

I live with cowering and fear,
knowing that they are always near.
I try my best to make them glad
So they will not treat me bad.

I cannot know if they are pleased
Thus, I can never be at ease.
There’s no such thing as happiness
So, I’m confined to haplessness.

I hear that you’re a God of love
who live in high Heaven above.
But my sad heart cannot believe
that you, my mind would not deceive.

I’ve lived so long with angry gods,
So, all I know are strikes with rods.
But I am willing to explore 
a God who is love at the core.

First, tell me how you came to be
So that I can get to know Thee.
“I have no beginning or end
I am the source of life for men.”

I’ve wrestled with this thought before
But don’t think of it anymore.
Since I am, there must also be,
someone, somewhere, akin to thee.
  
What more do you want to tell me
so that I may learn to trust Thee?
“My Son and Spirit work with me.
We are one God, though we are three.”

“I sent my Son from Heaven to earth,
and He experienced human birth.
The Spirit helped Him live above sin
So, you and I can become kin.”

You are different from the gods
that rule us men with iron rods.
It will be better to serve you
than any god I ever knew.

I really want to be your Kin,
and not to be a slave to sin,
So, I can get to know you more,
and share the joys you have in store.

“Welcome, dear child, into my fold,
Come in, and get out of the cold 
where you were living all your life
walking on the edge of a knife.”

I’m so happy that I met you
from my view, out of the blue,
But even now, I really feel
that you’re a God, who’s truly real.
