A Last Goodbye
With my head against your breast,
your very heartbeat pounds within your chest;
a soft rumbling thunder between the tears
resounding loudly, deafening within my ears.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Time has not been kind
stealing away the very breath of life and mind;
in momentary gasps and pauses
staggering toward heaven's door as it closes.
Lord, have mercy on us.
A young life cheated by shortened time
lingering in passing seconds and minutes that unwind;
soon to cease this earthly existence breached,
unchaperoned to another place beyond my reach.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Tears soft and salty are released
in a sad recognition at its very least;
that we are parting from the sands of time
and you go your way and I, mine.
Lord, have mercy on us.
One last goodbye, teary eyes in mist
a look, a glance, the accepting final kiss;
time is never ours to keep
close your eyes now, fall asleep.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Say it soft, weeping as we cry
for me to remain, our last goodbye;
for you to go in eternal retreat
and I alone, with memory of you at peace.
