A Hunger

To wander in drab gloomy streets.
Sleepy eyes, red cold nose,
darkened cheekbones,
a rumbling stomach.
A nightmare condensed,
no way out.
How many tears must he shed?

High on a building a large bird sat,
black as dusk, eyes searching for prey.
Was it a hawk or a crow?
His eyes could barely see,
but he could smell
the coffee being prepared,
the toast being burned.

All in vain, the bird was better than him.
He swallowed his pride
and slowly trudged
towards a day shelter.
At least there he could eat.
Then back again
in the dark streets
where he could hide
from the foreshadowing of death.

It’s so sad and lonely living on the streets hungry for a bite to eat. That's something birds never have to worry about when all is provided on the land. A thought provoking free verse write Victor… Belle

The suffering and despair of a destitute man is captured well in this sad and heartfelt poem. Governments certainly need to prioritize better, because what is more important than a person's life? Excellent writing, Victor.

Hi Victor, what a great poem you wrote. We must continue to remember those who go without a full meal. This pain is more terrible than any other suffering they have ever faced. Birds do not have to worry about money or food since it is constantly available to them. Should it be permitted for a bird to have more than a human?

In straights of hunger, all gloom and doom, where even a meal will still send him to his eventual death. Well done, my friend!

The sadness in this is overwhelming. Birds do not worry about shelter and food, for it is always provided. Should a bird have more than a man? Nicely expressed, Victor.

Yes, there are SO many people who do not have a single meal to eat... when our soul pursues for 'wants' more and more, we must always think of those people like this... who have nothing... nothing at all.... An inspiring poem Victor... God bless... ~ Ani

So sad Victor that in this day and age there are many who have little or nothing to eat. Tom
