A Dog Is Someone Or Something Replaceable

When the tick at last loud enough that my clock did knock I got a dog I saved and I readied and I searched with my gut And I found you You most spectacular mutt You taught me You changed me In a way brought me up Such a challenging intelligent self possessed pup I was in awe Adored you so daily Absorbing each moment of every walk How you glowed in the moonlight of our late at night jaunts And sat with me watching what was there to watch You were there with me when my life fell apart I thought too often about you About me Without you That too soon inevitable death do we part Spent too much time worried about a pain in my heart When the time came You were noble I was by your side Adopting my next dog Three days after you died 17.03.09 Composed for Someone or Something Replaceable contest

It's really difficult here to get a rescue pet. Arg. We had to find shelters that understood animals need homes, not act like the Interpol or the FBI. This really loads up shelters and animals stay locked in cages. It's very tragic. If you are sane, have a good home, love and money to care for an animal..it's not enough? Perfectly awful, Maureen! Two months to find a cat to adopt? Panagiota

That defies logic. Even in town here, it is apparently difficult to adopt, over the bridge, it's easier in the next province~ you would think... Hope you find your fuzzy love. xomo

Thank you for sharing this lovely tribute! It's very descriptive of the way they share our ups and downs throughout life... & that is so precious! Ours was also there when our lives were falling apart- & I will always be grateful for the comfort she gave. I love your line, "Such a challenging intelligent self possessed pup"... reminds me of our sweet, spunky girl.

LOL! I love how you so aptly described that: "I was owned by a wolf dog, now I own a dog". So true! There is quite a difference in the domesticated version. ;)

Thank you for checking it out :) She did teach me so much. I was owned by a wolf dog, now I own a dog... She was regal, magnificent, but it's so much easier with a friendly one I have to admit lol xomo

It is a beautiful, sad, tribute to your spectacular mutt. They always take a piece of your heart with them. Felt a few tears. Such love.Thank you for mentioning this poem. My Nikita was with me when my life fell apart. She knew me so well, an exceptional girl. I have written so many poems around my girls, not on PS ..yet.Thank you for sharing. My girls,my heart...

A very beautiful written poem, it s so sad that your dog died, well my also dies two years ago after that we shifted to new house and then my mother never allows me to have one as our house wasn t having space, believe me dogs are more loyal than your lovers, your lover can leave you but your dog will never left you, when you ll be sad, notice it sometime it also becmae sad, sometime they evwn make you laugh by stiting their tongue continuesly on your face

Thank you Faraz :) I always tell people who say they can't get a dog cuz house too small or no yard that a Great Dane is an apartment sized dog, the den is a hole in the ground, it's how much space you want to share, and you, they, need to walk. It's huge responsibility mum probably doesn't want :)

Maureen, I LOVED your reply to Cheryl. I have certainly been there - in the end I think there is great value in such writing, though it can be messy. : ) Whether or not we have more places in our hearts - this is a question sometimes, the answer not always constant. The disparity in lifespans of people and dogs is a hard thing for me. I cry still for dogs more than a decade past, that were not even mine.

Exactly! And why "someone" in this contest meant I had to write about my dog ;) I have doves I know I'll cry over, our pets are precious friends. Cheers Doug xomo

I enjoyed this and related as all who have loved a pet can. The only answer to love lost is love found, though each pet family member is unique and held in their own room inside our hearts. I've never been ready within days, but I've always made it to ready. I like this, especially all the lines describing your times together. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Maureen. What a unique way to view this contest. ANY dog or cat that is at least normal will steal our hearts in just days so this is so very true. Only animals can be so charmingly replaceable!!

Well said Andrea! The moment it came to mind it struck me as blaringly obvious ;) I'm forever beside myself when I meet people who have had a dog and could never have another because the loss was so great; for me, that feeling of loss is but a reflection of the wonderful, and why close your heart to feeling That again? Meh, just me I suppose.

Sad but wise that you adopted a new friend. Still I am sure your other dog was not replaced, you just chose to keep being a loving person.

True, that place in my heart will always be hers, but that empty space I kept stepping over, that had to be replaced ;) xomo
