This morning I went for a country stroll Saw greenery of summer at its best But off road walking had taken its toll So the next stop was an Inn for a rest . Ploughman's I ordered with a pint of beer I took a seat and watched folk come and go The sounds of banter and talk I could hear Background music playing easy and slow. I finished lunch and left by the main door A shame to leave such merriment behind And tempted I was to just have one more But the home journey I still had to find. I looked at my map then got on my way Making the most of this warm summer day.
Written 20th July 2019. (A ploughman's lunch is an English cold meal of bread, cheese, onions and meat, usually accompanied by butter and pickles. As its name suggests, it is most commonly eaten at lunchtime, is particularly associated with pubs, and often accompanied with beer.) (The Cotswolds is an area in south central and south west England comprising the Cotswold Hills, a range of rolling hills that rise from the meadows of the upper Thames to an escarpment, known as the Cotswold Edge, above the Severn Valley and Evesham Vale. The area is defined by the bedrock of Jurassic limestone that creates a type of grassland habitat rare in the UK and that is quarried for the golden-coloured Cotswold stone. It contains unique features derived from the use of this mineral; the predominantly rural landscape contains stone-built villages, historical towns and stately homes and gardens. This makes me want to visit the Cotswolds (It’s on my bucket list) and eat a Ploughman’s lunch. I had that at an English pub that used to be here in Fresno, California called Goodbody’s. I miss it.

Thank you very much Jennifer, it's a beautiful part of the uk, our town is right on the edge and I often go cycling there. Stopped over in Fresno on our way to Yosemite, I'm sorry we didn't get to see more of it as we were on an organised trip. Tom

Loved reading this Tom. I've been toying with the idea of writing a poem about Bourton On The Water and reading this has spurred me on. Cheers Gary

If I need a card to a friend, and I went to the store, not any store, the very expensive one... and found this ... I would not hesitate to pick and buy this one... to share with a friend. God Bless your day. Ann! The lunch looked wonderful. And the walk... they are always wonderful.. anywhere anytime.

Hi Tom, we drive through the Cotswold when we did our tour of some of England and Edinburgh - beautiful, , with field and fields of flowers - dont most of the British film stars live there? And went to a few pubs on our way, up to Scotland 2 stick out in my mind, one in Stratford upon Avon where a dog wanted to come home with me - close to Anne Hathaway's Cottage - lovely pub, and Guy Fawkes pub in York. Love your poem. Blessings, Jennifer.

The Cotswolds is on my bucket list. I don't want to come to England again and not see the area. It reminds me a bit of Amsterdam. I loved your poem and I appreciated the information and the pictures too! Is this for the contest about food? All the best Tom xxoo : )

Thank you Connie, its not for contest just an idea I had and drew on memories past. If you're ever this way no doubt Stratford on Avon would be on your list and I'm twenty five mins away. You'd have to visit Shakespeare's house. Tom

Beautiful slice of life tale within the cozy confines of a Shakespearean sonnet. I felt like I was back in the green hills of the British Isles, a very nice stroll down memory lane... thank you for the share. Keep writing, poet!

Very descriptive write, Tom..I felt like I was there--taking the stroll--lunch at the pub. Amazing how comforting it is to have a lunch in pubs in your part of the world..and the variety of food you get there (have done that in many places in Europe). An excellent write--glad to be reading your poetry again.

Thank you Vijay, first off I hope you had a fantastic time on your river boat cruise, we're looking to do one next year. Lovely countryside where we live now. The town.of Broadway is ten mins away and Stratford on Avon about 25 mins away, I live on the edge of Evesham and love to walk and cycle in the open country that's about 5 mins from my house. Hope you got a lot of inspiration from the places you visited. Tom
