A Century's Dance

One hundred years ago, she wouldn’t live,
Science and research back then did not give,
Her a fighting chance against her cancer,
Today she swings past it, a smooth dancer.

Her grandmother died at just thirty-three,
From her pain and suffering she was free,
Her daughter grew up without a mother,
Her only memories from her brother.

Our learning and research have come so far,
Survival no longer a distant star,
Life after cancer went from months to years,
The quality improved with fewer fears.

She traveled in time to see her nan,
And thank her for today’s treatment plan,
And all the women who died too young,
Their strength and courage should still be sung.

The past's women knew their lives would be short,
Joined clinical trials for support,
They knew they wouldn’t have much to gain,
A sliver of hope, maybe less pain.

They are the reasons survival is good,
Women now live from cancer as they should,
Back then science meant well respected fact,
Due to progress, lives today are intact.
