A Camping Trip Memory, Night Mare!!

Our family loved travel, and drove the highways,

Back in '76, in the happy old days

On a trip to the mountains, my big sister came too,

She brought her sweet baby, new member, our crew

We traveled along with sweet harmonies song,

A sweet memory that has lasted life long

Back then 'The Waltons' were such a hit show,

If you're my age or older, I'm sure that you know!

In American homes it was quite a big thing,

To watch that show weekly; such joy it would bring

The evening "good nights" at the end of that show

Influenced what happened, that night long ago

We'd secured a nice campground, Independence Day week

In a wilderness setting with firs, lakes and creek

There was Mama, and Papa, and we sisters three

And sister's sweet tot, settled down comfortably

The sun had long set and the campfire put out,

We had all nestled down to sweet sleep without doubt

And then it began, like The Waltons that night,

In the trailer there shown not the single-est light

We all had our nicknames, and used them back then,

In use as the family goodnights were set in

"G'night mom!" "G'night to you, sweet Chelserie",

"G'night dad!" "G'night Bets!" That nickname for me! :)

"Goodnight Kimmie Jean!" said big sister

                                                      To her child,

Sweet voice in the night, in that wilderness wild

"Ok now, to sleep all!" said daddy's gruff voice,

For our dad was so tired, and sleep was his choice.

"Sweet dreams all!" My mother did not spare,

"Pleasant dreams!" chorused all of us nestled in there.

Silence ensued till I opened my eyes

With a realization, of somewhat surprise

Big sister had not got a special "G'night"

My voice broke the silence of rest in the air

                                      Breaking sweet calm, blurted out

                                                   "Oh! Night Mare!"

"What the...?" said pops, and then laughter ensued

All night there were chuckles which I hadn't pursued

Dad found it not funny to lay wide awake

As laughter broke out till that trailer did shake!

Life has sped onward as quick eagle wings

And I have to tell you, sometimes that flight stings

In that moment so silly, how could we know?

                                           So speedily time

                                 Swallows Fifty years flow?!

Note: Mary's nickname was Mare :)

I like this one, Bj, and the memories it brought back from years ago when the Waltons were on TV and how we camped sometimes way back when the children were young. Thank you for sharing this one with us. Sara K.

Great flowing story. I enjoyed this. I was into the Little House on the Prairie then and we took many camping trips traveling. This is well written. :)

Bj, this is the sweetest! As we are older we look back and but the ink never dries (being wet and full). I remember us all yelling out names for a younger sis (mom was pregnant with) then she was named “Amy,” and how fun because Carter was in the office and a sit , maybe SNL, was saying, Goodnight, Amy, just like the Waltons. Fave!!

I agree Kim, some of those wells of memories are the ink that needs to pen them! That is a cute memory of you and your sisters, we have an Amy too! My oldest daughter, I love that name, it was my grandma's name :) Adorable, I wonder what names you were all calling out. SNL was hysterically funny, they and Carol Burnett always had such funny skits! I am so happy this poem is a fave for you and that it brought back some happy memories for you as well. Have a blessed day Kim, thank you for your visit and comment! I so appreciate you! :) <3

A great poem captures a vivid and relatable memory with a clear narrative thread. It transports the reader back to a specific moment in time and effectively shares a personal story. The structure is well-organized, and the flow of the story is engaging.

We have to be about the same age. My marriage is going on 51 years .that was only a few years since I left home and went to Utah. I loved so many tv shoes like the one you mentioned. Also really big for me; Little House on the Prairie and my big family loved Bonanza.

I just turned 17 in June of 1976 and got married right after we graduated high school of 1977. We will be married 49 years on our next anniversary! We have to be close in age for sure :) We loved to watch Little House on the Prairie as well, and Bonanza a bit before the other two came along. Little Joe became 'Pa' and then in the late 80's I think it was, he played the angel in 'Touched by an Angel', yet another favorite. He was quite the actor, Michael Landon, very talented and well loved :)

Dear BJ, like opening an old family album where the edges are worn but the moment still breathes. The Walton-style goodnights made me smile, how a tiny slip of a nickname can flip a whole trailer into laughter. What struck me most is how fast fifty years can vanish, yet that one night stays bright as a match in the dark. Blessings, Daniel

It's so true, some memories are living and breathing in our minds, and it is wonderful to bring them out and let them breathe in the living daylight of the present. My grandmother had relayed the fast movement of time to me as a young lady, she said we stay the same, our spirit doesn't age as our flesh does. Inside, I feel that now. One thing we have that she didn't have were the living colors and audio of the television shows like we do now. We can find 'The Waltons' on Amazon, Youtube, etc. and there they are, young as light and refreshing us right back to a now distant time in our own life. I think that the tv, cinema and music of those days brings everything back to us so vibrantly, that it may be harder for us baby boomers and those who have been blessed with all we have enjoyed, bringing memories so close, we can almost transport into yesterday. Thank you for your visit and comment Daniel, blessings to you as well!

We had the Waltons too, they don't make shows like that anymore. Time certainly speeds up as you get older. Happy memories BJ, they stay with you forever. Tom

It was a sweet show, my parents arranged schedules around that show back in the day :) You are so right, time does speed up, way too quickly, growing up, ten years seemed an eternity, and now it's almost a blink of an eye. Yes, those happy memories are the honey of life aren't they? Life is fleeting, we so need to embrace the sweetness. Thank you for stopping over Tom, I appreciate you so much.

Aah for the love, times and the simple life on Walton Mountain. The Waltons was a popular show here in England too. Kudos to you Bj for the structure, narrative and rhyming here. I really enjoyed the read. It is hard not to become nostalgic - in fact it’s that bittersweet blend of memories, pleasure and sadness that writes many of my own poems. Goodnight Valsa. Goodnight Gershon. Goodnight Bj. Cheers - Gary. :)

Yes, you're right, the bittersweet often comes with the muses of our hearts that just want to break free and breathe again in the living day, and so we write. I'm glad to know our sweet Mother Country cousins enjoyed the Waltons as well, that is wonderful to hear. We didn't have British television shows except for a few presentations on PBS, back in the good ole days, but did enjoy Dr Who a few years after my husband and I were married, and my favorite from years recent 'Keeping up Appearances' I love that show, lol! Walton Mountain, ah, those sweet shows, loved them :) Thank you for your visit and wonderful comment Gary, Goodnight :)

When I look back, I too feel that 50 long years have fled in no time. Your poem has brought quite a number of nostalgic memories. What a wonderful time it was with all my siblings and parents. Now two of my siblings are gone. The remaining are old. Wonder if we will ever have a trip together. Enjoyed your poem so much dear BJ

Valsa, thank you for reading and the understanding and sweet comment. The three sisters there that night are still here, but I wonder whether we have any hope of ever actually being together again. My older brother, older cousin John, like a brother to us, and two of my older sisters are now passed on, as are our parents. It's hard not to be nostalgic, isn't it? It is hard to believe just how quickly time passes us by. I'm glad you liked my poem. Though a happy and funny memory, leaves me a little blue. But eternity is forever, and I believe there will be much more opportunity beyond the final farewells. It's crazy to think America's Bicentennial was 50 years ago, those years which raced by so quickly. Crazy to think in another 50 years (which may feel like no time to the young ones alive at present, as we do now), it will be the Tricentennial. I pray our country can get there intact. I sure hope so, may freedom reign <3

Crazy, right? I still have Bicentennial trinkets from then, I guess they're collector's items, maybe. It feels like yesterday. How'd we get here so quickly?!
