A Caged Bird Still Sings
A finch
Caged in a corner
Of the living room
Never allowed to sleep
on it’s own
Without having to endure
the noise
Beckoned
Whenever you
had to get the song
Out of your drink
A stream of castigation
Flowed from the bottle
If it dared to refuse
The voice you missed
from yourself
Claim it as yours
So your friends could go along
Say that you taught it
so well
Leaving your
son in the cage
So long as
you could hear it
Was that all
I was?
