A Bicycle Bell

A bicycle bell very clearly does say, Melodiously, “Please get out of my way!” It isn’t as jarring as honking we’d hear From taxis or cars warning us to steer clear. It doesn’t disturb like a grating alarm And the decibel level won’t cause any harm. Its sound isn’t shrill like a whistle that’s blown, To summon a cab, which most doormen do own. It’s so much preferred to a growl or a bark Which a dog will employ as a threat or a hark! But for humans, out walking, instead of a yell When you’re blocked, just consider a bicycle bell.

I love the idea of a bicycle bell. "It’s so much preferred to a growl or a bark" My sister (with the rods in her neck) walks a bike path and she almost gets mowed down by bikes all the time arriving from the back - they do not HAVE bells! Where are their BELLS?

In Waikiki, bicycles are prohibited on sidewalks, but the sound of a bicycle bell behind you is quite common, and bicyclists all expect you to leap off the sidewalk and make room for them! Aloha!

Bicycle bells seem to come from another era, don't they?... though I'd like to hear them again. Great points you made there, Ilene. :) gw

I could hear the bicycle bell while I read your poem. They were always a pleasant sound.
