1957- My Beginning

Wham-o’s old Pluto Platter, gets a brand-new name. Fred and Ethel say farewell, Dick Clarke gets his fame. The Cat in the Hat is born, Bogie has moved on. Hurricane Audrey rages, while Paul meets with John. Sputnik said that space is now, the brand new frontier. Russia’s I. C. B. M makes, their intentions clear. Four hundred officials killed, by Vietcong hands. Elvis starts his life behind, the walls of Graceland. Seventy thousand more lives, lost to Asian flu. We were losing the space race, as Vanguard dies too. In Arkansas the guard blocks, the Little Rock Nine. Eisenhower sends his troops, to settle the times. McGovern points a finger, says they're Commie Reds. Soviets test the H Bomb, brings ultimate dread. Laika makes it into space, U.S. is grounded. Great Britain test their bomb and, alarms are sounded. Great innovations in births, and technology. Electric watch, Edsel, Jayne Torvill and me.

Fascinating, Jerry!! Seems like the news events were so much more meaningful back in 1957. Now we're blessed with pronoun corrections, bathroom usage, Insane Muslim Mullahs and vicious autocrats, senile Presidents, 'green revolutions' bound to fail, etc. Thanks! ~ Gershon

Thanks, Jerry, for resurrecting some of my own memories about 1957. I can still remember most of them, but Sputnik stands out for me because of the fear that Russia was getting ahead of the US in the race for space. School curriculums were subsequently changed. I also remember electric watches. Oh, those trials...I remember feeling a bit terrified that year. Nicely done. Enjoy your evening, Sara

Jerry, thanks so much for taking me back to that year. It was sort of a "banner one" for me, too.

Your poem is very dynamic. So much happened that year. I especially liked the last line. I am happy you're here.
