...The only thing I miss about Los Angeles
is the Hollywood Freeway at midnight, windows down and
radio blaring
bearing right into the center of the city, the Capitol Tower
on the right, and beyond it, Hollywood Boulevard
blazing
--pimps, surplus stores, footprints of the stars
--descending through the city
fast as the law would allow
through the lights, then rising to the stack
out of the city
to the stack where...Read more of this...

...The jane is zoned! no nightspot here, no bar
there, no sweet freeway, and no premises

Arrive a time when all coons lose dere grip,
but is he come? Le's do a hoedown, gal,

...you are backing the car out into life itself,
like millions of others you enter the arena once more.
you are on the freeway threading through traffic now,
moving both towards something and towards nothing at all as you punch
the radio on and get Mozart, which is something, and you will somehow
get through the slow days and the busy days and the dull
days and the hateful days and the rare days, all both so delightful
and so disappointing because
we are all so alike a...Read more of this...

Maybe Trout Fishing in America Shorty just pedaled down
to San Jose in his wheelchair, rattling along the freeway at
a quarter of a mile an hour.
I don't know what happened to him. But if he comes back
to San Francisco someday and dies, I have an idea.
Trout Fishing in America Shorty should be buried right
beside the Benjamin Franklin statue in Washington Square.
We should anchor his wheelchair to a huge gray stone and

...Silence has no zen today.
Ambient freeway noise
from ? mile away,
the occasional Friday nighter
coming home 2:00 a.m. Saturday,
the appliances with two-tone hums,
the bumping and grinding
of an old swamp cooler,
a distant train,
forces what has been pushed back
to break through.
My father needs O 2
all the time now.

...they found him walking along the freeway
all red in
front
he had taken a rusty tin can
and cut off his sexual
machinery
as if to say --
see what you've done to
me? you might as well have the

and he put part of him
in one pocket and
part of him in
another
and that's how they found him,
walking
along.
they gave him over to the

who tried to sew the parts

...There's a breathless hush on the freeway tonight
Beyond the ledges of concrete
restaurants fall into dreams
with candlelight couples
Lost Alexandria still burns
in a billion lightbulbs
Lives cross lives
idling at stoplights
Beyond the cloverleaf turnoffs
'Souls eat souls in the general emptiness'
A piano concerto comes out a kitchen window
A yogi speaks at Ojai
'It's all taking pace in one ...Read more of this...
