Corot

...ent His mighty direction, snatch
    A spark beneath His wheel.

Since God sweeps onward dim and vast,
Creating the channelled vein of Man
And Leaf for His passage, His shadow is cast
    On all for us to scan.

Ah listen, for Silence is not lonely:
Imitate the magnificent trees
That speak no word of their rapture, but only

Mater Triumphalis

...ighty sons of dawn and daughters,
Of this night's songs thine ear shall keep but one;
That supreme song which shook the channelled waters,
And called thee skyward as God calls the sun.

Come, though all heaven again be fire above thee;
Though death before thee come to clear thy sky;
Let us but see in his thy face who love thee;

Prelude

...hed
From eyes and tresses flowers and tears,
From heart and spirit hopes and fears,
Upon the hollow stream whose bed
Is channelled by the foamless years;

With footless joy and wingless grief
And twin-born faith and disbelief
Who share...Read more of this...

Seaport

...Green sea-tarnished copper
And sea-tarnished gold
Of cupolas.

Sea-runnelled streets
Channelled by salt air
That wears the white stone.

The sunlight-filled cistern
Of a dry-dock. Square shadows.
Sun-slatted smoke above meticulous stooping of cranes.

Water pressed up by ships' prows
Going, coming.

City dust turned
Back by the sea-wind's
Wall....Read more of this...

The Mourners

...hambles where they lie;
When lo! a million woman-faces drift
 Like pale leaves through the sky.

The cheeks of some are channelled deep with tears;
 But some are tearless, with wild eyes that stare
Into the shadow of the coming years
 Of fathomless despair.

And some are young, and some are very old;
 And some are rich, some poor beyond belief;
Yet all are strangely like, set in the mould
 Of everlasting grief.

They fill the vast of Heaven, face on face;
 And then I see one ...Read more of this...
