378. Song—Bessy and her Spinnin Wheel

...cented birk and hawthorn white,
Across the pool their arms unite,
Alike to screen the birdie’s nest,
And little fishes’ caller rest;
The sun blinks kindly in the beil’,
Where blythe I turn my spinnin’ wheel.

On lofty aiks the cushats wail,
And Echo cons the doolfu’ tale;
The lintwhites in the hazel braes,
Delighted, rival ither’s lays;
The craik amang the claver hay,
The pairtrick whirring o’er the ley,
The swallow jinkin’ round my shiel,
Amuse me at my spinnin’ wheel.

68. The Holy Fair

...UPON 1 a simmer Sunday morn
 When Nature’s face is fair,
I walked forth to view the corn,
 An’ snuff the caller air.
The rising sun owre Galston muirs
 Wi’ glorious light was glintin;
The hares were hirplin down the furrs,
 The lav’rocks they were chantin
 Fu’ sweet that day.

As lightsomely I glowr’d abroad,
 To see a scene sae gay,
Three hizzies, early at the road,
 Cam skelpin up the way.
Twa had manteeles o” dolefu’ black,
 But ane wi’ lyart lining;

A Waltz-Quadrille

...The band was playing a waltz-quadrille,
I felt as light as a wind-blown feather,
As we floated away, at the caller’s will,
Through the intricate, mazy dance together.
Like mimic armies our lines were meeting,
Slowly advancing, and then retreating,
All decked in their bright array;
And back and forth to the music’s rhyme
We moved together, and all the time
I knew you were going away.

The fold of your strong arm sent a thrill
From heart to brain as we gently glided...Read more of this...

Aprons of Silence

...nd the kept in the hoosegow
Knew it—on the streets, in the postoffice,
On the cars, into the railroad station
Where the caller was calling, “All a-board,
All a-board for .. Blaa-blaa .. Blaa-blaa,
Blaa-blaa .. and all points northwest .. all a-board.”
Here I took along my own hoosegow
And did business with my own thoughts.
Do you see? It must be the aprons of silence....Read more of this...

Be Lost In The Call

Reason, tread the path of selflessness into eternity. Remember God so much that you are forgotten.
Let the caller and the called disappear;

The Ballad Of How Macpherson Held The Floor

...ck MacPherson playing on.
Though all lay low about him, yet he held his head on high,
And piped as if he stood upon the caller crags of Skye.
His face was grim as granite, and no favour did he ask,
Though weary were his mighty lungs and empty was his flask.
And when a fallen foe wailed out: "Say! when will you have done?"
MacPherson grinned and answered: "Hoots! She's only ha'f begun."
Aye, though his hands were bloody, and his knees were gay with gore,
A Grampian of Highland...Read more of this...

The Lost Pyx: A Mediaeval Legend

...
"Go, father, in haste to the cot on the waste,
 And shrive a man waiting to die."

Said the priest in a shout to the caller without,
 "The night howls, the tree-trunks bow;
One may barely by day track so rugged a way,
 And can I then do so now?"

No further word from the dark was heard,
 And the priest moved never a limb;
And he slept and dreamed; till a Visage seemed
 To frown from Heaven at him.

In a sweat he arose; and the storm shrieked shrill,
 And smote as ...Read more of this...
