Symptoms

 Although you have given me a stomach upset,
Weak knees, a lurching heart, a fuzzy brain,
A high-pitched laugh, a monumental phone bill,
A feeling of unworthiness, sharp pain
When you are somewhere else, a guilty conscience,
A longing, and a dread of what’s in store,
A pulse rate for the Guinness Book of Records -
Life now is better than it was before.
Although you have given me a raging temper, Insomnia, a rising sense of panic, A hopeless challenge, bouts of introspection, Raw, bitten nails, a voice that’s strangely manic, A selfish streak, a fear of isolation, A silly smile, lips that are chapped and sore, A running joke, a risk, an inspiration – Life now is better than it was before.
Although you have given me a premonition, Chattering teeth, a goal, a lot to lose, A granted wish, mixed motives, superstitions, Hang-ups and headaches, fear of awful news, A bubble in my throat, a dare to swallow, A crack of light under a closing door, The crude, fantastic prospect of forever – Life now is better that it was before.

Turtle Swan

 Because the road to our house
is a back road, meadowlands punctuated
by gravel quarry and lumberyard,
there are unexpected travelers
some nights on our way home from work.
Once, on the lawn of the Tool and Die Company, a swan; the word doesn't convey the shock of the thing, white architecture rippling like a pond's rain-pocked skin, beak lifting to hiss at my approach.
Magisterial, set down in elegant authority, he let us know exactly how close we might come.
After a week of long rains that filled the marsh until it poured across the road to make in low woods a new heaven for toads, a snapping turtle lumbered down the center of the asphalt like an ambulatory helmet.
His long tail dragged, blunt head jutting out of the lapidary prehistoric sleep of shell.
We'd have lifted him from the road but thought he might bend his long neck back to snap.
I tried herding him; he rushed, though we didn't think those blocky legs could hurry-- then ambled back to the center of the road, a target for kids who'd delight in the crush of something slow with the look of primeval invulnerability.
He turned the blunt spear point of his jaws, puffing his undermouth like a bullfrog, and snapped at your shoe, vising a beakful of-- thank God-- leather.
You had to shake him loose.
We left him to his own devices, talked on the way home of what must lead him to new marsh or old home ground.
The next day you saw, one town over, remains of shell in front of the little liquor store.
I argued it was too far from where we'd seen him, too small to be his.

though who could tell what the day's heat might have taken from his body.
For days he became a stain, a blotch that could have been merely oil.
I did not want to believe that was what we saw alive in the firm center of his authority and right to walk the center of the road, head up like a missionary moving certainly into the country of his hopes.
In the movies in this small town I stopped for popcorn while you went ahead to claim seats.
When I entered the cool dark I saw straight couples everywhere, no single silhouette who might be you.
I walked those two aisles too small to lose anyone and thought of a book I read in seventh grade, "Stranger Than Science," in which a man simply walked away, at a picnic, and was, in the act of striding forward to examine a flower, gone.
By the time the previews ended I was nearly in tears-- then realized the head of one-half the couple in the first row was only your leather jacket propped in the seat that would be mine.
I don't think I remember anything of the first half of the movie.
I don't know what happened to the swan.
I read every week of some man's lover showing the first symptoms, the night sweat or casual flu, and then the wasting begins and the disappearance a day at a time.
I don't know what happened to the swan; I don't know if the stain on the street was our turtle or some other.
I don't know where these things we meet and know briefly, as well as we can or they will let us, go.
I only know that I do not want you --you with your white and muscular wings that rise and ripple beneath or above me, your magnificent neck, eyes the deep mottled autumnal colors of polished tortoise-- I do not want you ever to die.

WARS and RUMORS OF WARS

I escape the horrors of war with a towel and a room Offering myself to Palestinian and Jewish boys as a ‘piece’ to the Middle East when I should be concerned with the untimely deaths of dark-skinned babies and the brutal murders of light-skinned fathers 2.
I’ve been more consumed with how to make the cover of local *** rags than how to open the minds of angry little boys trotting loaded guns Helpless in finding words that will stop the blood from spilling like secrets into soil where great prophets are buried 3.
I return to the same spaces where I once dealt drugs a celebrated author gliding past velvet ropes while my club kid friends are mostly dead from an overdose or HIV-related symptoms Marilyn wears the crown of thorns while 4 out of the 5 weapons used to kill Columbine students had been sold by the same police force that came to their rescue Not all terrorists have features too foreign to be recognized in the mirror Our mistakes are our responsibility 4.
The skyline outside my window is the only thing that has changed Men still rape women and blame them for their weaknesses Children are still molested by the perversion of Catholic guilt My ex-boyfriend still takes comfort in the other white powder- the one used solely to destroy himself and those around him Not the one used to ignite and create carnage or mailbox fear 5.
It is said when skin is cut, and then pressed together, it seals but what about acid-burned skulls engraved with the word ‘******’, a foot bone with flesh and other crushed body parts 6.
It was a gay priest that read last rites to firefighters as towers collapsed It was a gay pilot that crashed a plane into Pennsylvania fields It was a gay couple that was responsible for the tribute of light in memory of the fallen Taliban leaders would bury them to their necks and tumble walls to crush their heads Catholic leaders simply condemn them as perverts having offered nothing but sin ***** blood is just rosaries scattered on tile 7.
Heroes do not always get heaven 8.

For the Better

 A Quack, to no true Skill in Physick bred, 
With frequent Visits cursed his Patient's Bed; 
Enquiring, how he did his Broths digest, 
How chim'd his Pulse, and how he took his Rest:
If shudd'ring Cold by Burnings was pursu'd,
And at what time the Aguish Fit renew'd.
The waining Wretch, each day become more faint, In like proportion doubles his Complaint; Now swooning Sweats he begs him to allay, Now give his Lungs more liberty to play, And take from empty'd Veins these scorching Heats away: Or if he saw the Danger did increase, To warn him fair, and let him part in Peace.
My Life for yours, no Hazard in your Case The Quack replies; your Voice, your Pulse, your Face, Good Signs afford, and what you seem to feel Proceeds from Vapours, which we'll help with Steel.
With kindled Rage, more than Distemper, burns The suff'ring Man, who thus in haste returns: No more of Vapours, your belov'd Disease, Your Ignorance's Skreen, your What-you-please, With which you cheat poor Females of their Lives, Whilst Men dispute not, so it rid their Wives.

The Stomach, you must know, Sir, is a Part– But, sure, I feel Death's Pangs about my Heart.
Nay then Farewel! I need no more attend The Quack replies.
A sad approaching Friend Questions the Sick, why he retires so fast; Who says, because of Fees I've paid the Last, And, whilst all Symptoms tow'rd my Cure agree, Am, for the Better, Dying as you see.

 THIS 1 wot ye all whom it concerns,
I, Rhymer Robin, alias Burns,

A ne’er-to-be-forgotten day,
Sae far I sprackl’d up the brae,

But O for Hogarth’s magic pow’r! To show Sir Bardie’s willyart glow’r, An’ how he star’d and stammer’d, When, goavin, as if led wi’ branks, An’ stumpin on his ploughman shanks, He in the parlour hammer’d.
I sidying shelter’d in a nook, An’ at his Lordship steal’t a look, Like some portentous omen; Except good sense and social glee, An’ (what surpris’d me) modesty, I markèd nought uncommon.
I watch’d the symptoms o’ the Great, The gentle pride, the lordly state, The arrogant assuming; The fient a pride, nae pride had he, Nor sauce, nor state, that I could see, Mair than an honest ploughman.
Then from his Lordship I shall learn, Henceforth to meet with unconcern One rank as weel’s another; Nae honest, worthy man need care To meet with noble youthful Daer, For he but meets a brother.

Circumstantial Evidence

 She does not mind a good cigar
 (The kind, that is, I smoke);
She thinks all men quite stupid are,
 (But laughs whene’er I joke).
She says she does not care for verse (But praises all I write); She says that punning is a curse, (But then mine are so bright!) She does not like a big moustache (You see that mine is small); She hates a man with too much “dash,” (I scarcely dash at all!) She simply dotes on hazel eyes (And mine, you note, are that); She likes a man of portly size; (Gad! I am getting fat!) She says champagne is made to drink; (In this we quite agree!) And all these symptoms make me think Sweet Kate’s in love with me.

 Oh, some folk think vice-royalty is festive and hilarious,

are manifold and various, So listen, whilst I tell in song The duties of an aide-de-cong.
Whatsoever betide To the Governor's side We must stick -- or the public would eat him -- For each bounder we see Says, "Just introduce me To His Lordship -- I'm anxious to meet him.
" Then they grab at his paw And they chatter and jaw Till they'd talk him to death -- if we'd let 'em -- And the folk he has met, They are all in a fret, Just for fear he might chance to forget 'em.
When some local King Billy Is talking him silly, Or the pound-keeper's wife has waylaid him, From folks of that stamp When he has to decamp -- We're his aides to decamp -- so we aid him.
Then some feminine beauty Will come and salute ye, She may be a Miss or a Madam, Or a man comes in view, Bails you up, "How de do!" And you don't know the fellow from Adam! But you've got to keep sweet With each man that you meet, And a trifle like this mustn't bar you, So you clutch at his fin, And you say, with a grin, "Oh, delighted to see you -- how are you?" Then we do country shows Where some prize-taker blows Of his pig -- a great, vast forty-stoner -- "See, my Lord! ain't he fine! How is that for a swine!" When it isn't a patch on its owner! We fix up the dinners For parsons and sinners And lawyers and bishops and showmen, And a judge of the court We put next to a "sport", And an Orangeman next to a Roman.
We send invitations To all celebrations, Some Nobody's presence entreating, And the old folks of all We invite to a ball, And the young -- to a grandmothers' meeting.
And when we go dancing, Like cart-horses prancing, We plunge where the people are thickenkn'; And each gay local swell Thinks it's "off" to dance well, So he copies our style -- ain't it sickenin'! Then at banquets we dine And swig cheap, nasty wine, But the poor aide-de-camp mustn't funk it -- And they call it champagne, But we're free to maintain That he feels real pain when he's drunk it.
Then our horses bestriding We go out a-riding Lest our health by confinement we'd injure; You can notice the glare Of the Governor's hair When the little boys say, "Go it, Ginger!" Then some wandering lords -- They so often are frauds -- This out-of-way country invading, If a man dresses well And behaves like a swell, Then he's somebody's cook masquerading.
But an out-an-out ass With a thirst for the glass And the symptoms of drink on his "boko", Who is perpetually Pursuing the ballet, He is always the "true Orinoco".
We must slave with our quills -- Keep the cash -- pay the bills -- Keep account of the liquor and victuals -- So I think you'll agree That the gay A.

At The Window

 Every morning, as I walk down
From my dreary lodgings, toward the town,
I see at a window, near the street,
The face of a woman, fair and sweet,
With soft brown eyes and chestnut hair,
And red lips, warm with the kisses left there.
And she stands there as long as she can see The man who walks just ahead of me.
At night, when I come from my office down town, There stands a woman with eyes of brown, Smiling out through the window blind At the man who is walking just behind.
This fellow and I resemble each other - At least so I'm told by one and another, (Though I think I'm the handsomer by far, of the two,) I don't know him at all, save to 'how d'ye do, ' Or nod when I meet him.
I think he's at work In a dry-goods store as a salaried clerk.
And I am a lawyer of high renown, Having a snug bank account and an office down town, - Yet I feel for that fellow an envious spite, (it had no other name, so I speak it outright.
) There were symptoms before; but it's grown I believe, Alarmingly fast, since one cloudy eve, When passing the little house close by the street, I heard the patter of two little feet, And a figure in pink fluttered down to the gate, And a sweet voice exclaimed, 'Oh, Will, you are late! And, darling, I've watched at the window until - Sir, I beg pardon! I thought it was Will! ' I passed on my way, with such a strange feeling Down in my heart.
My brain seemed to be reeling; For, as it happens, my name, too, is Will, And that voice crying 'darling, ' sent such an odd thrill Throughout my whole being! 'How nice it would be, ' Thought I, 'If it were in reality me That she's watched and longed for, instead of that lout! ' (It was envy that made me use that word, no doubt,) For he's a fine fellow, and handsome! -(ahem!) But then it's absurd that this rare little gem Of a woman should stand there and look out for him Till she brings on a headache, and makes her eyes dim, While I go to lodgings, dull, dreary and bare, With no one to welcome me, no one to care If I'm early of late.
No soft eyes of brown To watch when I go to, or come from the town.
This bleak, wretched, bachelor life is about (If I may be allowed the expression) played out.
Somewhere there must be, in the wide world, I think, Another fair woman who dresses in pink, And I know of a cottage, for sale, just below, And it has a French window in front and - heigho! I wonder how long, at the longest, 'twill be Before, coming home from the office, I'll see A nice little woman there, watching for me.
