The Puritans Ballad

 My love came up from Barnegat, 
The sea was in his eyes; 
He trod as softly as a cat 
And told me terrible lies.
His hair was yellow as new-cut pine In shavings curled and feathered; I thought how silver it would shine By cruel winters weathered.
But he was in his twentieth year, Ths time I'm speaking of; We were head over heels in love with fear And half a-feared of love.
My hair was piled in a copper crown -- A devilish living thing -- And the tortise-shell pins fell down, fell down, When that snake uncoiled to spring.
His feet were used to treading a gale And balancing thereon; His face was as brown as a foreign sail Threadbare against the sun.
His arms were thick as hickory logs Whittled to little wrists; Strong as the teeth of a terrier dog Were the fingers of his fists.
Within his arms I feared to sink Where lions shook their manes, And dragons drawn in azure ink Lept quickened by his veins.
Dreadful his strength and length of limb As the sea to foundering ships; I dipped my hands in love for him No deeper than the tips.
But our palms were welded by a flame The moment we came to part, And on his knuckles I read my name Enscrolled with a heart.
And something made our wills to bend, As wild as trees blown over; We were no longer friend and friend, But only lover and lover.
"In seven weeks or seventy years -- God grant it may be sooner! -- I'll make a hankerchief for you From the sails of my captain's schooner.
We'll wear our loves like wedding rings Long polished to our touch; We shall be busy with other things And they cannot bother us much.
When you are skimming the wrinkled cream And your ring clinks on the pan, You'll say to yourself in a pensive dream, 'How wonderful a man!' When I am slitting a fish's head And my ring clanks on the knife, I'll say with thanks as a prayer is said, 'How beautiful a wife!' And I shall fold my decorous paws In velvet smooth and deep, Like a kitten that covers up its claws To sleep and sleep and sleep.
Like a little blue pigeon you shall bow Your bright alarming crest; In the crook of my arm you'll lay your brow To rest and rest and rest.

A Hole In The Floor

 for Rene Magritte

The carpenter's made a hole
In the parlor floor, and I'm standing
Staring down into it now
At four o'clock in the evening,
As Schliemann stood when his shovel
Knocked on the crowns of Troy.
A clean-cut sawdust sparkles On the grey, shaggy laths, And here is a cluster of shavings >From the time when the floor was laid.
They are silvery-gold, the color Of Hesperian apple-parings.
Kneeling, I look in under Where the joists go into hiding.
A pure street, faintly littered With bits and strokes of light, Enters the long darkness Where its parallels will meet.
The radiator-pipe Rises in middle distance Like a shuttered kiosk, standing Where the only news is night.
Here's it's not painted green, As it is in the visible world.
For God's sake, what am I after? Some treasure, or tiny garden? Or that untrodden place, The house's very soul, Where time has stored our footbeats And the long skein of our voices? Not these, but the buried strangeness Which nourishes the known: That spring from which the floor-lamp Drinks now a wilder bloom, Inflaming the damask love-seat And the whole dangerous room.

59. Death and Dr. Hornbook

 SOME books are lies frae end to end,
And some great lies were never penn’d:
Ev’n ministers they hae been kenn’d,
 In holy rapture,
A rousing whid at times to vend,
 And nail’t wi’ Scripture.
But this that I am gaun to tell, Which lately on a night befell, Is just as true’s the Deil’s in hell Or Dublin city: That e’er he nearer comes oursel’ ’S a muckle pity.
The clachan yill had made me canty, I was na fou, but just had plenty; I stacher’d whiles, but yet too tent aye To free the ditches; An’ hillocks, stanes, an’ bushes, kenn’d eye Frae ghaists an’ witches.
The rising moon began to glowre The distant Cumnock hills out-owre: To count her horns, wi’ a my pow’r, I set mysel’; But whether she had three or four, I cou’d na tell.
I was come round about the hill, An’ todlin down on Willie’s mill, Setting my staff wi’ a’ my skill, To keep me sicker; Tho’ leeward whiles, against my will, I took a bicker.
I there wi’ Something did forgather, That pat me in an eerie swither; An’ awfu’ scythe, out-owre ae shouther, Clear-dangling, hang; A three-tae’d leister on the ither Lay, large an’ lang.
Its stature seem’d lang Scotch ells twa, The queerest shape that e’er I saw, For fient a wame it had ava; And then its shanks, They were as thin, as sharp an’ sma’ As cheeks o’ branks.
“Guid-een,” quo’ I; “Friend! hae ye been mawin, When ither folk are busy sawin!” 1 I seem’d to make a kind o’ stan’ But naething spak; At length, says I, “Friend! whare ye gaun? Will ye go back?” It spak right howe,—“My name is Death, But be na fley’d.
”—Quoth I, “Guid faith, Ye’re maybe come to stap my breath; But tent me, billie; I red ye weel, tak care o’ skaith See, there’s a gully!” “Gudeman,” quo’ he, “put up your whittle, I’m no designed to try its mettle; But if I did, I wad be kittle To be mislear’d; I wad na mind it, no that spittle Out-owre my beard.
” “Weel, weel!” says I, “a bargain be’t; Come, gie’s your hand, an’ sae we’re gree’t; We’ll ease our shanks an tak a seat— Come, gie’s your news; This while ye hae been mony a gate, At mony a house.
” 2 “Ay, ay!” quo’ he, an’ shook his head, “It’s e’en a lang, lang time indeed Sin’ I began to nick the thread, An’ choke the breath: Folk maun do something for their bread, An’ sae maun Death.
“Sax thousand years are near-hand fled Sin’ I was to the butching bred, An’ mony a scheme in vain’s been laid, To stap or scar me; Till ane Hornbook’s 3 ta’en up the trade, And faith! he’ll waur me.
“Ye ken Hornbook i’ the clachan, Deil mak his king’s-hood in spleuchan! He’s grown sae weel acquaint wi’ Buchan 4 And ither chaps, The weans haud out their fingers laughin, An’ pouk my hips.
“See, here’s a scythe, an’ there’s dart, They hae pierc’d mony a gallant heart; But Doctor Hornbook, wi’ his art An’ cursed skill, Has made them baith no worth a f—t, D—n’d haet they’ll kill! “’Twas but yestreen, nae farther gane, I threw a noble throw at ane; Wi’ less, I’m sure, I’ve hundreds slain; But deil-ma-care, It just play’d dirl on the bane, But did nae mair.
“Hornbook was by, wi’ ready art, An’ had sae fortify’d the part, That when I looked to my dart, It was sae blunt, Fient haet o’t wad hae pierc’d the heart Of a kail-runt.
“I drew my scythe in sic a fury, I near-hand cowpit wi’ my hurry, But yet the bauld Apothecary Withstood the shock; I might as weel hae tried a quarry O’ hard whin rock.
“Ev’n them he canna get attended, Altho’ their face he ne’er had kend it, Just —— in a kail-blade, an’ sent it, As soon’s he smells ’t, Baith their disease, and what will mend it, At once he tells ’t.
“And then, a’ doctor’s saws an’ whittles, Of a’ dimensions, shapes, an’ mettles, A’ kind o’ boxes, mugs, an’ bottles, He’s sure to hae; Their Latin names as fast he rattles As A B C.
“Calces o’ fossils, earths, and trees; True sal-marinum o’ the seas; The farina of beans an’ pease, He has’t in plenty; Aqua-fontis, what you please, He can content ye.
“Forbye some new, uncommon weapons, Urinus spiritus of capons; Or mite-horn shavings, filings, scrapings, Distill’d per se; Sal-alkali o’ midge-tail clippings, And mony mae.
” “Waes me for Johnie Ged’s-Hole 5 now,” Quoth I, “if that thae news be true! His braw calf-ward whare gowans grew, Sae white and bonie, Nae doubt they’ll rive it wi’ the plew; They’ll ruin Johnie!” The creature grain’d an eldritch laugh, And says “Ye needna yoke the pleugh, Kirkyards will soon be till’d eneugh, Tak ye nae fear: They’ll be trench’d wi’ mony a sheugh, In twa-three year.
“Whare I kill’d ane, a fair strae-death, By loss o’ blood or want of breath This night I’m free to tak my aith, That Hornbook’s skill Has clad a score i’ their last claith, By drap an’ pill.
“An honest wabster to his trade, Whase wife’s twa nieves were scarce weel-bred Gat tippence-worth to mend her head, When it was sair; The wife slade cannie to her bed, But ne’er spak mair.
“A country laird had ta’en the batts, Or some curmurring in his guts, His only son for Hornbook sets, An’ pays him well: The lad, for twa guid gimmer-pets, Was laird himsel’.
“A bonie lass—ye kend her name— Some ill-brewn drink had hov’d her wame; She trusts hersel’, to hide the shame, In Hornbook’s care; Horn sent her aff to her lang hame, To hide it there.
“That’s just a swatch o’ Hornbook’s way; Thus goes he on from day to day, Thus does he poison, kill, an’ slay, An’s weel paid for’t; Yet stops me o’ my lawfu’ prey, Wi’ his d—n’d dirt: “But, hark! I’ll tell you of a plot, Tho’ dinna ye be speakin o’t; I’ll nail the self-conceited sot, As dead’s a herrin; Neist time we meet, I’ll wad a groat, He gets his fairin!” But just as he began to tell, The auld kirk-hammer strak the bell Some wee short hour ayont the twal’, Which rais’d us baith: I took the way that pleas’d mysel’, And sae did Death.

Moth Collectors

 When our moggy brings in moths, she squeaks
through the kitchen, tips between her teeth,

and scoots upstairs to scuff under the bed.
If we find these blow-ins they’re usually dead though a number dust the floor with tatty wings or unfurl from sheets like pencil shavings, furry woodcuts, a lime-green surprise – still tremulous, and slight enough to fly.
We hold our fluttery palms to the window, weigh each one’s chances and let go – though tonight you pinch up slivers of moonlight, and creatures whirr from room to room like sooty sparks, or tightly sprung toys glancing our low-lit angle poise.
We lie in almost solid heat; these hours you turn with fists and feet and cup my hand against your side to feel the shape, the quiver of a beating heel.

The Ax-Helve

 I've known ere now an interfering branch
Of alder catch my lifted ax behind me.
But that was in the woods, to hold my hand From striking at another alder's roots, And that was, as I say, an alder branch.
This was a man, Baptiste, who stole one day Behind me on the snow in my own yard Where I was working at the chopping block, And cutting nothing not cut down already.
He caught my ax expertly on the rise, When all my strength put forth was in his favor, Held it a moment where it was, to calm me, Then took it from me — and I let him take it.
I didn't know him well enough to know What it was all about.
There might be something He had in mind to say to a bad neighbor He might prefer to say to him disarmed.
But all he had to tell me in French-English Was what he thought of— not me, but my ax; Me only as I took my ax to heart.
It was the bad ax-helve some one had sold me — “Made on machine,' he said, plowing the grain With a thick thumbnail to show how it ran Across the handle's long-drawn serpentine, Like the two strokes across a dollar sign.
“You give her 'one good crack, she's snap raght off.
Den where's your hax-ead flying t'rough de hair?” Admitted; and yet, what was that to him? “Come on my house and I put you one in What's las' awhile — good hick'ry what's grow crooked, De second growt' I cut myself—tough, tough!” Something to sell? That wasn't how it sounded.
“Den when you say you come? It's cost you nothing.
To-naght?” As well to-night as any night.
Beyond an over-warmth of kitchen stove My welcome differed from no other welcome.
Baptiste knew best why I was where I was.
So long as he would leave enough unsaid, I shouldn't mind his being overjoyed (If overjoyed he was) at having got me Where I must judge if what he knew about an ax That not everybody else knew was to count For nothing in the measure of a neighbor.
Hard if, though cast away for life with Yankees, A Frenchman couldn't get his human rating! Mrs.
Baptiste came in and rocked a chair That had as many motions as the world: One back and forward, in and out of shadow, That got her nowhere; one more gradual, Sideways, that would have run her on the stove In time, had she not realized her danger And caught herself up bodily, chair and all, And set herself back where she ,started from.
“She ain't spick too much Henglish— dat's too bad.
” I was afraid, in brightening first on me, Then on Baptiste, as if she understood What passed between us, she was only reigning.
Baptiste was anxious for her; but no more Than for himself, so placed he couldn't hope To keep his bargain of the morning with me In time to keep me from suspecting him Of really never having meant to keep it.
Needlessly soon he had his ax-helves out, A quiverful to choose from, since he wished me To have the best he had, or had to spare — Not for me to ask which, when what he took Had beauties he had to point me out at length To ensure their not being wasted on me.
He liked to have it slender as a whipstock, Free from the least knot, equal to the strain Of bending like a sword across the knee.
He showed me that the lines of a good helve Were native to the grain before the knife Expressed them, and its curves were no false curves Put on it from without.
And there its strength lay For the hard work.
He chafed its long white body From end to end with his rough hand shut round it.
He tried it at the eye-hold in the ax-head.
“Hahn, hahn,” he mused, “don't need much taking down.
” Baptiste knew how to make a short job long For love of it, and yet not waste time either.
Do you know, what we talked about was knowledge? Baptiste on his defense about the children He kept from school, or did his best to keep — Whatever school and children and our doubts Of laid-on education had to do With the curves of his ax-helves and his having Used these unscrupulously to bring me To see for once the inside of his house.
Was I desired in friendship, partly as someone To leave it to, whether the right to hold Such doubts of education should depend Upon the education of those who held them.
But now he brushed the shavings from his knee And stood the ax there on its horse's hoof, Erect, but not without its waves, as when The snake stood up for evil in the Garden— Top-heavy with a heaviness his short, Thick hand made light of, steel-blue chin drawn down And in a little — a French touch in that.
Baptiste drew back and squinted at it, pleased: “See how she's cock her head!”

SCHOOL SMELL

 Composed of chalk dust,

Pencil shavings and

The sharp odour

Of stale urine;

It meets me now and then

Creeping down a creosoted corridor

Or waiting to be banged

With the dust from piles of books

On top of a cupboard.
The double desks heeled with iron Having long been replaced; The steel-nibbed pens and Ink watered to pale grey Gone too: the cane’s bamboo bite Has nothing left to bite on And David’s psalms Must learn each other.
But it’s there Ready to spring out Like a coiled snake skin still envenomed After years by a suburban hearth.
It was fifteen years ago But I still remember Smigger, Our greying old headmaster In his spats and striped trousers, The last in our town to wear them, And his northern accent, Heavy as Sunday.
"Now then you lads, I’m not having this Or I’ll tan you all," He’d bawl at a mill-hand’s boy For drawing cunts on the lavatory wall.
Old Holmes, too, his yellow teeth And hair all over the place, One hand trembling with shell shock.
The other with rage, one foot lame And brain half daft, Ready to belt you For moving an eye.
The boys were always Belching and farting And tormenting me for my Long words and soft voice And they do still When I sense that stink In my nostrils.
