Goalkeeper Joe

 Joe Dunn were a bobby for football 
He gave all his time to that sport, 
He played for the West Wigan Whippets, 
On days when they turned out one short.
He’d been member of club for three seasons And had grumbled again and again, Cos he found only time that they’d used him, Were when it were pouring with rain! He felt as his talents were wasted When each week his job seemed to be No but minding the clothes for the others And chucking clods at referee! So next time selection committee Came round to ask him for his sub He told them if they didn’t play him, He’d transfer to some other club.
Committee they coaxed and cudgelled him But found he’d have none of their shifts So they promised to play him next weekend In match against Todmorden Swifts.
This match were the plum of the season An annual fixture it stood, ‘T were reckoned as good as a cup tie By them as liked plenty of blood! The day of the match dawned in splendour A beautiful morning it were With a fog drifting up from the brick fields And a drizzle of rain in the air.
The Whippets made Joe their goalkeeper A thing as weren’t wanted at all For they knew once battle had started They’d have no time to mess with the ball! Joe stood by the goal posts and shivered While the fog round his legs seemed to creep 'Til feeling neglected and lonely He leant back and went fast asleep.
He dreamt he were playing at Wembley And t’roar of a thundering cheer He were kicking a goal for the Whippets When he woke with a clout in his ear! He found 'twere the ball that had struck him And inside the net there it lay But as no one had seen this ‘ere ‘appen He punted it back into play! 'Twere the first ball he’d punted in anger His feelings he couldn’t restrain Forgetting as he were goalkeeper He ran out and kicked it again! Then after the ball like a rabbit He rushed down the field full of pride He reckoned if nobody stopped him Then ‘appen he’d score for his side.
‘Alf way down he bumped into his captain Who weren’t going to let him go by But Joe, like Horatio Nelson Put a fist to the Captain’s blind eye! On he went 'til the goal lay before him Then stopping to get himself set He steadied the ball, and then kicked it And landed it right in the net! The fog seemed to lift at that moment And all eyes were turned on the lad The Whippets seemed kind of dumbfounded While the Swifts started cheering like mad! 'Twere his own goal as he’d kicked the ball through He’d scored for his foes ‘gainst his friends For he’d slept through the referee’s whistle And at half time he hadn’t changed ends! Joe was transferred from the West Wigan Whippets To the Todmorden Swifts, where you’ll see Still minding the clothes for the others And chucking clods at referee!

The Identification

 So you think its Stephen?
Then I'd best make sure
Be on the safe side as it were.
Ah, theres been a mistake.
The hair you see, its black, now Stephens fair .
.
.
Whats that? The explosion? Of course, burnt black.
Silly of me.
I should have known.
Then lets get on.
The face, is that the face mask? that mask of charred wood blistered scarred could that have been a child's face? The sweater, where intact, looks in fact all too familiar.
But one must be sure.
The scoutbelt.
Yes thats his.
I recognise the studs he hammered in not a week ago.
At the age when boys get clothes-conscious now you know.
Its almost certainly Stephen.
But one must be sure.
Remove all trace of doubt.
Pull out every splinter of hope.
Pockets.
Empty the pockets.
Handkerchief? Could be any schoolboy's.
Dirty enough.
Cigarettes? Oh this can't be Stephen.
I dont allow him to smoke you see.
He wouldn't disobey me.
Not his father.
But that's his penknife.
Thats his alright.
And thats his key on the keyring Gran gave him just the other night.
Then this must be him.
I think I know what happened .

OUT of the cradle endlessly rocking, 
Out of the mocking-bird’s throat, the musical shuttle,

Over the sterile sands, and the fields beyond, where the child, leaving his bed, wander’d

Hither, my love! Here I am! Here! With this just-sustain’d note I announce myself to you; This gentle call is for you, my love, for you.
Do not be decoy’d elsewhere! That is the whistle of the wind—it is not my voice; That is the fluttering, the fluttering of the spray; Those are the shadows of leaves.

8 The aria sinking; All else continuing—the stars shining, The winds blowing—the notes of the bird continuous echoing, With angry moans the fierce old mother incessantly moaning, On the sands of Paumanok’s shore, gray and rustling; The yellow half-moon enlarged, sagging down, drooping, the face of the sea almost touching; The boy extatic—with his bare feet the waves, with his hair the atmosphere dallying, The love in the heart long pent, now loose, now at last tumultuously bursting, The aria’s meaning, the ears, the Soul, swiftly depositing, The strange tears down the cheeks coursing, The colloquy there—the trio—each uttering, The undertone—the savage old mother, incessantly crying, To the boy’s Soul’s questions sullenly timing—some drown’d secret hissing, To the outsetting bard of love.
9 Demon or bird! (said the boy’s soul,) Is it indeed toward your mate you sing? or is it mostly to me? For I, that was a child, my tongue’s use sleeping, Now I have heard you, Now in a moment I know what I am for—I awake, And already a thousand singers—a thousand songs, clearer, louder and more sorrowful than yours, A thousand warbling echoes have started to life within me, Never to die.
O you singer, solitary, singing by yourself—projecting me; O solitary me, listening—nevermore shall I cease perpetuating you; Never more shall I escape, never more the reverberations, Never more the cries of unsatisfied love be absent from me, Never again leave me to be the peaceful child I was before what there, in the night, By the sea, under the yellow and sagging moon, The messenger there arous’d—the fire, the sweet hell within, The unknown want, the destiny of me.

 When Nature made her chief work, Stella's eyes,
In colour black why wrapt she beams so bright?
Would she in beamy black, like painter wise,
Frame daintiest lustre, mix'd of shades and light?
Or did she else that sober hue devise,
In object best to knit and strength our sight;
Lest, if no veil these brave gleams did disguise,
They, sunlike, should more dazzle than delight?
Or would she her miraculous power show,
That, whereas black seems beauty's contrary,
She even in black doth make all beauties flow?
Both so, and thus,--she, minding Love should be

Magna Carta

 I'll tell of the Magna Charter
As were signed at the Barons' command 
On Runningmead Island in t' middle of t' Thames 
By King John, as were known as "Lack Land.
" Some say it were wrong of the Barons Their will on the King so to thrust, But you'll see if you look at both sides of the case That they had to do something, or bust.
For John, from the moment they crowned him, Started acting so cunning and sly, Being King, of course, he couldn't do wrong, But, by gum, he'd a proper good try.
He squandered the ratepayers' money, All their cattle and corn did he take, 'Til there wasn't a morsel of bread in the land, And folk had to manage on cake.
The way he behaved to young Arthur Went to show as his feelings was bad; He tried to get Hubert to poke out his eyes, Which is no way to treat a young lad.
It were all right him being a tyrant To vassals and folks of that class, But he tried on his tricks with the Barons an' all, And that's where he made a 'faux pas'.
He started bombarding their castles, And burning them over their head, 'Til there wasn't enough castles left to go round, And they had to sleep six in a bed.
So they went to the King in a body, And their spokesman, Fitzwalter by name, He opened the 'ole in his 'elmet and said, Conciliatory like, " What's the game?" The King starts to shilly and shally, He sits and he haws and he hums, 'Til the Barons in rage started gnashing their teeth, And them with no teeth gnashed their gums Said Fitz, through the 'ole in his 'elmet, "It was you as put us in this plight.
" And the King having nothing to say to this, murmured "Leave your address and I'll write".
This angered the gallant Fitzwalter; He stamped on the floor with his foot, And were starting to give John a rare ticking off, When the 'ole in his 'elmet fell shut.
"We'll get him a Magna Charter," Said Fitz when his face he had freed; Said the Barons "That's right and if one's not enough, Get a couple and happen they'll breed.
'' So they set about making a Charter, When at finish they'd got it drawn up, It looked like a paper on cattle disease, Or the entries for t' Waterloo Cup.
Next day, King John, all unsuspecting, And having the afternoon free, To Runningmead Island had taken a boat, And were having some shrimps for his tea.
He'd just pulled the 'ead off a big 'un, And were pinching its tail with his thumb, When up came a barge load of Barons, who said, "We thought you'd be here so we've come" When they told him they'd brought Magna Charter, The King seemed to go kind of limp, But minding his manners he took off his hat And said " Thanks very much, have a shrimp.
" " You'd best sign at once," said Fitzwalter, " If you don't, I'll tell thee for a start The next coronation will happen quite soon, And you won't be there to take part.
" So they spread Charter out on t' tea table, And John signed his name like a lamb, His writing in places was sticky and thick Through dipping his pen in the jam.
And it's through that there Magna Charter, As were signed by the Barons of old, That in England to-day we can do what we like, So long as we do what we're told.

 The mahogany table-top you smashed
Had been the broad plank top
Of my mother's heirloom sideboard-
Mapped with the scars of my whole life.
That came under the hammer.
That high stool you swung that day Demented by my being Twenty minutes late for baby-minding.
'Marvellous!' I shouted, 'Go on, Smash it into kindling.
That's the stuff you're keeping out of your poems!' And later, considered and calmer, 'Get that shoulder under your stanzas And we'll be away.
' Deep in the cave of your ear The goblin snapped his fingers.
So what had I given him? The bloody end of the skein That unravelled your marriage, Left your children echoing Like tunnels in a labyrinth.
Left your mother a dead-end, Brought you to the horned, bellowing Grave of your risen father And your own corpse in it.

Hey Baby

 Liner Notes - (from No More Mister Nice Girl)

I was having a foul day.
Some geezer harrassed me on the street and I got completely bent out of shape, but the guy was huge so I just stuffed my retort.
Went home to drink coffee.
No milk.
I ripped through the cupboards and found Non Dairy Creamer.
It tasted like ****.
I got into one of those senseless rages where you throw stuff.
I hurled the Non Dairy Creamer and it fell into the tub where I was running some bath water.
The creamer erupted and made this bathing gel of Non Dairy Creamer.
I was ready to kill myself.
Instead I wrote Hey Baby.
So I'm walking down the street minding my own business when this guy starts with me he's suckin' his lips goin' Hey Baby Yo Baby Hey Baby Yo and I get a little tense and nervous but I keep walking but the guy, he's dogging my every move hey Miss, he says, Don't miss this! And he grabs his crotch and sneers ear to ear so finally, I turn around Hey Buddy, I say I'm feelin' kinda tense, Buddy I got a fuckin' song in my heart so come on, Let's go I got a huge bucket of non-dairy creamer and some time to kill so let's do it we'll make some foul-smelling artifical milk and drink gallons and gallons and gallons of it Get our bladders exceedingly full then sit on the toilet together and let the water run in the shower and torture ourselves by not letting ourselves urinate as the water rushes loudly into the bathrub, okay? We'll do it together writhe in utter agony Just you and me and I'll even spring for some of that blue **** for the toilet bowl, all right? I mean, that's my idea of a good time so how bout it, you wanna? The guy backs up a bit Whatsa matter, Baby? You got somethin' against men?, he says No, I say I don't have anything against men Just STUPID men

The Equilibrists

 Full of her long white arms and milky skin 
He had a thousand times remembered sin.
Alone in the press of people traveled he, Minding her jacinth, and myrrh, and ivory.
Mouth he remembered: the quaint orifice From which came heat that flamed upon the kiss, Till cold words came down spiral from the head.
Grey doves from the officious tower illsped.
Body: it was a white field ready for love, On her body's field, with the gaunt tower above, The lilies grew, beseeching him to take, If he would pluck and wear them, bruise and break.
Eyes talking: Never mind the cruel words, Embrace my flowers, but not embrace the swords.
But what they said, the doves came straightway flying And unsaid: Honor, Honor, they came crying.
Importunate her doves.
Too pure, too wise, Clambering on his shoulder, saying, Arise, Leave me now, and never let us meet, Eternal distance now command thy feet.
Predicament indeed, which thus discovers Honor among thieves, Honor between lovers.
O such a little word is Honor, they feel! But the grey word is between them cold as steel.
At length I saw these lovers fully were come Into their torture of equilibrium; Dreadfully had forsworn each other, and yet They were bound each to each, and they did not forget.
And rigid as two painful stars, and twirled About the clustered night their prison world, They burned with fierce love always to come near, But honor beat them back and kept them clear .
Ah, the strict lovers, they are ruined now! I cried in anger.
But with puddled brow Devising for those gibbeted and brave Came I descanting: Man, what would you have? For spin your period out, and draw your breath, A kinder saeculum begins with Death.
Would you ascend to Heaven and bodiless dwell? Or take your bodies honorless to Hell ? In Heaven you have heard no marriage is, No white flesh tinder to your lecheries, Your male and female tissue sweetly shaped Sublimed away, and furious blood escaped.
Great lovers lie in Hell, the stubborn ones Infatuate of the flesh upon the bones; Stuprate, they rend each other when they kiss, The pieces kiss again, no end to this.
But still I watched them spinning, orbited nice.
Their flames were not more radiant than their ice.
I dug in the quiet earth and wrought the tomb And made these lines to memorize their doom:— EPITAPH Equilibrists lie here; stranger, tread light; Close, but untouching in each other's sight; Mouldered the lips arid ashy the tall skull.
Let them lie perilous and beautiful.

A Stone Is Nobodys

 A man ambushed a stone.
Caught it.
Made it a prisoner.
Put it in a dark room and stood guard over it for the rest of his life.
His mother asked why.
He said, because it's held captive, because it is captured.
Look, the stone is asleep, she said, it does not know whether it's in a garden or not.
Eternity and the stone are mother and daughter; it is you who are getting old.
The stone is only sleeping.
But I caught it, mother, it is mine by conquest, he said.
A stone is nobody's, not even its own.
It is you who are conquered; you are minding the prisoner, which is yourself, because you are afraid to go out, she said.
Yes yes, I am afraid, because you have never loved me, he said.
Which is true, because you have always been to me as the stone is to you, she said.
