An Evening Scene on the Same Subject

Up! up! my Friend, and quit your books;
Or surely you'll grow double:
Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks;
Why all this toil and trouble?

The sun, above the mountain's head,
A freshening lustre mellow
Through all the long green fields has spread,
His first sweet evening yellow.
Books! 'tis a dull and endless strife: Come, hear the woodland linnet, How sweet his music! on my life, There's more of wisdom in it.
And hark! how blithe the throstle sings! He, too, is no mean preacher: Come forth into the light of things, Let Nature be your Teacher.
She has a world of ready wealth, Our minds and hearts to bless— Spontaneous wisdom breathed by health, Truth breathed by cheerfulness.
One impulse from a vernal wood May teach you more of man, Of moral evil and of good, Than all the sages can.

A SKETCH.

                  The little hedge-row birds
  That peck along the road, regard him not.
  He travels on, and in his face, his step,
  His gait, is one expression; every limb,
  His look and bending figure, all bespeak
  A man who does not move with pain, but moves
  With thought—He is insensibly subdued
  To settled quiet: he is one by whom
  All effort seems forgotten, one to whom
  Long patience has such mild composure given,
  That patience now doth seem a thing, of which
  He hath no need.
He is by nature led
  To peace so perfect, that the young behold
  With envy, what the old man hardly feels.

Merlin

 I
Thy trivial harp will never please 
Or fill my craving ear; 
Its chords should ring as blows the breeze, 
Free, peremptory, clear.
No jingling serenader's art, Nor tinkle of piano strings, Can make the wild blood start In its mystic springs.
The kingly bard Must smile the chords rudely and hard, As with hammer or with mace; That they may render back Artful thunder, which conveys Secrets of the solar track, Sparks of the supersolar blaze.
Merlin's blows are strokes of fate, Chiming with the forest tone, When boughs buffet boughs in the wood; Chiming with the gasp and moan Of the ice-imprisoned hood; With the pulse of manly hearts; With the voice of orators; With the din of city arts; With the cannonade of wars; With the marches of the brave; And prayers of might from martyrs' cave.
Great is the art, Great be the manners, of the bard.
He shall not his brain encumber With the coil of rhythm and number; But, leaving rule and pale forethought, He shall aye climb For his rhyme.
"Pass in, pass in," the angels say, "In to the upper doors, Nor count compartments of the floors, But mount to paradise By the stairway of surprise.
" Blameless master of the games, King of sport that never shames, He shall daily joy dispense Hid in song's sweet influence.

Hands to hands, and feet to feet, In one body grooms and brides; Eldest rite, two married sides In every mortal meet.
Light's far furnace shines, Smelting balls and bars, Forging double stars, Glittering twins and trines.
The animals are sick with love, Lovesick with rhyme; Each with all propitious Time Into chorus wove.
Like the dancers' ordered band, Thoughts come also hand in hand; In equal couples mated, Or else alternated; Adding by their mutual gage, One to other, health and age.
Solitary fancies go Short-lived wandering to and ire, Most like to bachelors, Or an ungiven maid, Nor ancestors, With no posterity to make the lie afraid, Or keep truth undecayed.
Perfect-paired as eagle's wings, Justice is the rhyme of things; Trade and counting use The self-same tuneful muse; And Nemesis, Who with even matches odd, Who athwart space redresses The partial wrong, Fills the just period, And finishes the song.
Subtle rhymes, with ruin rife Murmur in the hour of life, Sung by the Sisters as they spin; In perfect time and measure they Build and unbuild our echoing clay.
As the two twilights of the day Fold us music-drunken in.

242. The Poet's Progress

 THOU, Nature, partial Nature, I arraign;
Of thy caprice maternal I complain.
The peopled fold thy kindly care have found, The hornèd bull, tremendous, spurns the ground; The lordly lion has enough and more, The forest trembles at his very roar; Thou giv’st the ass his hide, the snail his shell, The puny wasp, victorious, guards his cell.
Thy minions, kings defend, controul devour, In all th’ omnipotence of rule and power: Foxes and statesmen subtle wiles ensure; The cit and polecat stink, and are secure: Toads with their poison, doctors with their drug, The priest and hedgehog, in their robes, are snug: E’en silly women have defensive arts, Their eyes, their tongues—and nameless other parts.
But O thou cruel stepmother and hard, To thy poor fenceless, naked child, the Bard! A thing unteachable in worldly skill, And half an idiot too, more helpless still: No heels to bear him from the op’ning dun, No claws to dig, his hated sight to shun: No horns, but those by luckless Hymen worn, And those, alas! not Amalthea’s horn: No nerves olfact’ry, true to Mammon’s foot, Or grunting, grub sagacious, evil’s root: The silly sheep that wanders wild astray, Is not more friendless, is not more a prey; Vampyre-booksellers drain him to the heart, And viper-critics cureless venom dart.
Critics! appll’d I venture on the name, Those cut-throat bandits in the paths of fame, Bloody dissectors, worse than ten Monroes, He hacks to teach, they mangle to expose: By blockhead’s daring into madness stung, His heart by wanton, causeless malice wrung, His well-won ways-than life itself more dear— By miscreants torn who ne’er one sprig must wear; Foil’d, bleeding, tortur’d in th’ unequal strife, The hapless Poet flounces on through life, Till, fled each hope that once his bosom fired, And fled each Muse that glorious once inspir’d, Low-sunk in squalid, unprotected age, Dead even resentment for his injur’d page, He heeds no more the ruthless critics’ rage.
So by some hedge the generous steed deceas’d, For half-starv’d, snarling curs a dainty feast; By toil and famine worn to skin and bone, Lies, senseless of each tugging *****’s son.
· · · · · · A little upright, pert, tart, tripping wight, And still his precious self his dear delight; Who loves his own smart shadow in the streets, Better than e’er the fairest she he meets; Much specious lore, but little understood, (Veneering oft outshines the solid wood), His solid sense, by inches you must tell, But mete his cunning by the Scottish ell! A man of fashion too, he made his tour, Learn’d “vive la bagatelle et vive l’amour;” So travell’d monkeys their grimace improve, Polish their grin-nay, sigh for ladies’ love! His meddling vanity, a busy fiend, Still making work his selfish craft must mend.

Thy sons ne’er madden in the fierce extremes Of Fortune’s polar frost, or torrid beams; If mantling high she fills the golden cup, With sober, selfish ease they sip it up; Conscious the bounteous meed they well deserve, They only wonder “some folks” do not starve! The grave, sage hern thus easy picks his frog, And thinks the mallard a sad worthless dog.
When disappointment snaps the thread of Hope, When, thro’ disastrous night, they darkling grope, With deaf endurance sluggishly they bear, And just conclude that “fools are Fortune’s care:” So, heavy, passive to the tempest’s shocks, Strong on the sign-post stands the stupid ox.
Not so the idle Muses’ mad-cap train, Not such the workings of their moon-struck brain; In equanimity they never dwell, By turns in soaring heaven, or vaulted hell!

Meddlesome Matty

 One ugly trick has often spoil'd
The sweetest and the best; 
Matilda, though a pleasant child, 
One ugly trick possess'd, 
Which, like a cloud before the skies, 
Hid all her better qualities.
Sometimes she'd lift the tea-pot lid, To peep at what was in it, Or tilt the kettle, if you did But turn your back a minute.
In vain you told her not to touch, Her trick of meddling grew so much.
Her grandmamma went out one day, And by mistake she laid Her spectacles and snuff-box gay Too near the little maid; "Ah! well," thought she, "I'll try them on, As soon as grandmamma is gone.
" Forthwith she placed upon her nose The glasses large and wide; And looking round, as I suppose, The snuff-box too she spied: "Oh! what a pretty box is that; I'll open it," said little Matt.
"I know that grandmamma would say, 'Don't meddle with it, dear;' But then, she's far enough away, And no one else is near: Besides, what can there be amiss In opening such a box as this? " So thumb and finger went to work To move the stubborn lid, And presently a mighty jerk The mighty mischief did; For all at once, ah! woful case, The snuff came puffing in her face.
Poor eyes, and nose, and mouth, beside A dismal sight presented; In vain, as bitterly she cried, Her folly she repented.
In vain she ran about for ease; She could do nothing now but sneeze.
She dash'd the spectacles away, To wipe her tingling eyes, And as in twenty bits they lay, Her grandmamma she spies.
"Heyday! and what's the matter now?" Says grandmamma, with lifted brow.
Matilda, smarting with the pain, And tingling still, and sore, Made many a promise to refrain From meddling evermore.
And 'tis a fact, as I have heard, She ever since has kept her word.

Freedoms Fool

 To hell with Government I say;
I'm sick of all the piddling pack.
I'd like to scram, get clean away, And never, nevermore come back.
With heart of hope I long to go To some lost island of the sea, And there get drunk with joy to know No one on earth is over me.
There will be none to say me nay, So from my lexicon I can Obliterate the word "obey", And mock the meddling laws of man.
The laws of Nature and of God Are good enough for guys like me, Who scorn to kiss the scarlet rod Of office and authority.
No Stars and Stripes nor Union Jack, Nor tri-colour nor crimson rag Shall claim my love, I'll turn my back On every land, on every flag.
My banner shall be stainless white, An emblem of the Golden Rule, Yet for its freedom I will fight And die - like any other fool.
Oh Government's a bitter pill! No force or fear shall forge my fate; I'll bow to no communal will, For I myself shall be the State.
Uncurst by man-curb and control, my Isle shall be emparadised, And I will re-possess my soul .

The Exposed Nest

 You were forever finding some new play.
So when I saw you down on hands and knees I the meadow, busy with the new-cut hay, Trying, I thought, to set it up on end, I went to show you how to make it stay, If that was your idea, against the breeze, And, if you asked me, even help pretend To make it root again and grow afresh.
But 'twas no make-believe with you today, Nor was the grass itself your real concern, Though I found your hand full of wilted fern, Steel-bright June-grass, and blackening heads of clovers.
'Twas a nest full of young birds on the ground The cutter-bar had just gone champing over (Miraculously without tasking flesh) And left defenseless to the heat and light.
You wanted to restore them to their right Of something interposed between their sight And too much world at once--could means be found.
The way the nest-full every time we stirred Stood up to us as to a mother-bird Whose coming home has been too long deferred, Made me ask would the mother-bird return And care for them in such a change of scene And might out meddling make her more afraid.
That was a thing we could not wait to learn.
We saw the risk we took in doing good, But dared not spare to do the best we could Though harm should come of it; so built the screen You had begun, and gave them back their shade.
All this to prove we cared.
Why is there then No more to tell? We turned to other things.
I haven't any memory--have you?-- Of ever coming to the place again To see if the birds lived the first night through, And so at last to learn to use their wings.

The House Of Dust: Part 04: 02: Death: And A Derisive Chorus

 The door is shut.
She leaves the curtained office, And down the grey-walled stairs comes trembling slowly Towards the dazzling street.
Her withered hand clings tightly to the railing.
The long stairs rise and fall beneath her feet.
Here in the brilliant sun we jostle, waiting To tear her secret out .

We laugh, we hurry, We go our way, revolving, sinister, slow.
She blinks in the sun, and then steps faintly downward.
We whirl her away, we shout, we spin, we flow.
Where have you been, old lady? We know your secret!— Voices jangle about her, jeers, and laughter.

She trembles, tries to hurry, averts her eyes.
Tell us the truth, old lady! where have you been? She turns and turns, her brain grows dark with cries.
Look at the old fool tremble! She's been paying,— Paying good money, too,—to talk to spirits.

She thinks she's heard a message from one dead! What did he tell you? Is he well and happy? Don't lie to us—we all know what he said.
He said the one he murdered once still loves him; He said the wheels in wheels of time are broken; And dust and storm forgotten; and all forgiven.

But what you asked he wouldn't tell you, though,— Ha ha! there's one thing you will never know! That's what you get for meddling so with heaven! Where have you been, old lady? Where are you going? We know, we know! She's been to gab with spirits.
Look at the old fool! getting ready to cry! What have you got in an envelope, old lady? A lock of hair? An eyelash from his eye? How do you know the medium didn't fool you? Perhaps he had no spirit—perhaps he killed it.
Here she comes! the old fool's lost her son.
What did he have—blue eyes and golden hair? We know your secret! what's done is done.
Look out, you'll fall—and fall, if you're not careful, Right into an open grave.

but what's the hurry? You don't think you will find him when you're dead? Cry! Cry! Look at her mouth all twisted,— Look at her eyes all red! We know you—know your name and all about you, All you remember and think, and all you scheme for.
We tear your secret out, we leave you, go Laughingly down the street.
