Dyspeptic Clerk

 I think I'll buy a little field,
Though scant am I of pelf,
And hold the hope that it may yield
A living for myself;
For I have toiled ten thousand days
With ledger and with pen,
And I am sick of city ways
And soured with city men.
So I will plant my little plot With lettuce, beans and peas; Potatoes too - oh quite a lot, An pear and apple trees.
My carrots will be coral pink, My turnips ivory; And I'll forget my pen and ink, And office slavery.
My hut shall have a single room Monastically bare; A ****** fire for the winter gloom, A table and a chair.
A Frugalist I call myself, My needs are oh so small; My luxury a classic shelf Of poets on the wall.
Here as I dream, how grey and cold The City seems to me; Another world of green and gold Incessantly I see.
So I will fling my pen away, And learn a how to wield; A cashbook and a stool today .

Anseo

 When the master was calling the roll
At the primary school in Collegelands,
You were meant to call back Anseo
And raise your hand 
As your name occurred.
Anseo, meaning here, here and now, All present and correct, Was the first word of Irish I spoke.
The last name on the ledger Belonged to Joseph Mary Plunkett Ward And was followed, as often as not, By silence, knowing looks, A nod and a wink, the master's droll 'And where's our little Ward-of-court?' I remember the first time he came back The master had sent him out Along the hedges To weigh up for himself and cut A stick with which he would be beaten.
After a while, nothing was spoken; He would arrive as a matter of course With an ash-plant, a salley-rod.
Or, finally, the hazel-wand He had whittled down to a whip-lash, Its twist of red and yellow lacquers Sanded and polished, And altogether so delicately wrought That he had engraved his initials on it.
I last met Joseph Mary Plunkett Ward In a pub just over the Irish border.
He was living in the open, in a secret camp On the other side of the mountain.
He was fighting for Ireland, Making things happen.
And he told me, Joe Ward, Of how he had risen through the ranks To Quartermaster, Commandant: How every morning at parade His volunteers would call back Anseo And raise their hands As their names occurred.

The Hypnotist

 A man once read with mind surprised 
Of the way that people were "hypnotised"; 
By waving hands you produced, forsooth, 
A kind of trance where men told the truth! 
His mind was filled with wond'ring doubt; 
He grabbed his hat and he started out, 
He walked the street and he made a "set" 
At the first half-dozen folk he met.
He "tranced" them all, and without a joke 'Twas much as follows the subjects spoke: First Man "I am a doctor, London-made, Listen to me and you'll hear displayed A few of the tricks of the doctor's trade.
'Twill sometimes chance when a patient's ill That a doae, or draught, or a lightning pill, A little too strong or a little too hot, Will work its way to a vital spot.
And then I watch with a sickly grin While the patient 'passes his counters in'.
But when he has gone with his fleeting breath I certify that the cause of death Was something Latin, and something long, And who is to say that the doctor's wrong! So I go my way with a stately tread While my patients sleep with the dreamless dead.
" Next, Please "I am a barrister, wigged and gowned; Of stately presence and look profound.
Listen awhile till I show you round.
When courts are sitting and work is flush I hurry about in a frantic rush.
I take your brief and I look to see That the same is marked with a thumping fee; But just as your case is drawing near I bob serenely and disappear.
And away in another court I lurk While a junior barrister does your work; And I ask my fee with a courtly grace, Although I never came near the case.
But the loss means ruin too you, maybe, But nevertheless I must have my fee! For the lawyer laughs in his cruel sport While his clients march to the Bankrupt Court.
" Third Man "I am a banker, wealthy and bold -- A solid man, and I keep my hold Over a pile of the public's gold.
I am as skilled as skilled can be In every matter of ? s.
d.
I count the money, and night by night I balance it up to a farthing right: In sooth, 'twould a stranger's soul perplex My double entry and double checks.
Yet it sometimes happens by some strange crook That a ledger-keeper will 'take his hook' With a couple of hundred thousand 'quid', And no one can tell how the thing was did!" Fourth Man "I am an editor, bold and free.
Behind the great impersonal 'We' I hold the power of the Mystic Three.
What scoundrel ever would dare to hint That anything crooked appears in print! Perhaps an actor is all the rage, He struts his hour on the mimic stage, With skill he interprets all the scenes -- And yet next morning I give him beans.
I slate his show from the floats to flies, Because the beggar won't advertise.
And sometimes columns of print appear About a mine, and it makes it clear That the same is all that one's heart could wish -- A dozen ounces to every dish.
But the reason we print those statements fine Is -- the editor's uncle owns the mine.
" The Last Straw "A preacher I, and I take my stand In pulpit decked with gown and band To point the way to a better land.
With sanctimonious and reverent look I read it out of the sacred book That he who would open the golden door Must give his all to the starving poor.
But I vary the practice to some extent By investing money at twelve per cent, And after I've preached for a decent while I clear for 'home' with a lordly pile.
I frighten my congregation well With fear of torment and threats of hell, Although I know that the scientists Can't find that any such place exists.
And when they prove it beyond mistake That the world took millions of years to make, And never was built by the seventh day I say in a pained and insulted way that 'Thomas also presumed to doubt', And thus do I rub my opponents out.
For folks may widen their mental range, But priest and parson, thay never change.
" With dragging footsteps and downcast head The hypnotiser went home to bed, And since that very successful test He has given the magic art a rest; Had he tried the ladies, and worked it right, What curious tales might have come to light!

Perch-Fishing

On the far hill the cloud of thunder grew
And sunlight blurred below; but sultry blue
Burned yet on the valley water where it hoards
Behind the miller's elmen floodgate boards,
And there the wasps, that lodge them ill-concealed
In the vole's empty house, still drove afield
To plunder touchwood from old crippled trees
And build their young ones their hutched nurseries;
Still creaked the grasshoppers' rasping unison
Nor had the whisper through the tansies run
Nor weather-wisest bird gone home.
How then Should wry eels in the pebbled shallows ken Lightning coming? troubled up they stole To the deep-shadowed sullen water-hole, Among whose warty snags the quaint perch lair.
As cunning stole the boy to angle there, Muffling least tread, with no noise balancing through The hangdog alder-boughs his bright bamboo.
Down plumbed the shuttled ledger, and the quill On the quicksilver water lay dead still.
A sharp snatch, swirling to-fro of the line, He's lost, he's won, with splash and scuffling shine Past the low-lapping brandy-flowers drawn in, The ogling hunchback perch with needled fin.
And there beside him one as large as he, Following his hooked mate, careless who shall see Or what befall him, close and closer yet — The startled boy might take him in his net That folds the other.
Slow, while on the clay, The other flounces, slow he sinks away.
What agony usurps that watery brain For comradeship of twenty summers slain, For such delights below the flashing weir And up the sluice-cut, playing buccaneer Among the minnows; lolling in hot sun When bathing vagabonds had drest and done; Rootling in salty flannel-weed for meal And river shrimps, when hushed the trundling wheel; Snapping the dapping moth, and with new wonder Prowling through old drowned barges falling asunder.
And O a thousand things the whole year through They did together, never more to do.

Over The Alley

 Here in my office I sit and write
Hour on hour, and day on day, 
With no one to speak to from morn till night, 
Though I have a neighbour just over the way.
Across the alley that yawns between A maiden sits sewing the whole day long; A face more lovely is seldom seen In hall or castle or country throng.
Her curling tresses are golden brown; Her eyes, I think, are violet blue, Though her long, thick lashes are always down, Jealously hiding the orbs from view; Her neck is slender, and round, and white, And this way and that way her soft hair blows, As there in the window from morn till night, She sits in her beauty, and sings and sews.
And I in my office chair, lounge and dream, In an idle way, of a sweet 'might be, ' While the maid at her window sews her seam, With never a glance or a thought for me.
Perhaps she is angry because I look So long and so often across the way, Over the top of my ledger-book; But those stolen glances brighten the day.
And I am blameless of any wrong; - She is the transgressor, by sitting there And making my eyes turn oft and long To a face so delicate, pure and fair.
Work is forgotten; the page lies clean, Untouched by the pen, while hours go by.
Oh, maid of the pensive air and mien! Give me one glance of your violet eye.
Drop your thimble or spool of thread Down in the alley, I pray, my sweet, Or the comb or ribbon from that fair head, That I may follow with nimble feet; For how can I tell you my heart has gone Across the alley, and lingers there, Till I know your name, my beautiful one? How could I venture, and how could I dare? Just one day longer I'll wait and dream, And then, if you grant me no other way, I shall write you a letter: 'Maid of the seam, You have stolen my property; now give pay, Beautiful robber and charming thief! Give me one glance for the deed you've done.
' Thus shall I tell you my loss and grief, Over the alley, my beautiful one.
