November

 The landscape sleeps in mist from morn till noon;
And, if the sun looks through, 'tis with a face
Beamless and pale and round, as if the moon,
When done the journey of her nightly race,
Had found him sleeping, and supplied his place.
For days the shepherds in the fields may be, Nor mark a patch of sky— blindfold they trace, The plains, that seem without a bush or tree, Whistling aloud by guess, to flocks they cannot see.
The timid hare seems half its fears to lose, Crouching and sleeping 'neath its grassy lair, And scarcely startles, tho' the shepherd goes Close by its home, and dogs are barking there; The wild colt only turns around to stare At passer by, then knaps his hide again; And moody crows beside the road forbear To fly, tho' pelted by the passing swain; Thus day seems turn'd to night, and tries to wake in vain.
The owlet leaves her hiding-place at noon, And flaps her grey wings in the doubling light; The hoarse jay screams to see her out so soon, And small birds chirp and startle with affright; Much doth it scare the superstitious wight, Who dreams of sorry luck, and sore dismay; While cow-boys think the day a dream of night, And oft grow fearful on their lonely way, Fancying that ghosts may wake, and leave their graves by day.
Yet but awhile the slumbering weather flings Its murky prison round— then winds wake loud; With sudden stir the startled forest sings Winter's returning song— cloud races cloud, And the horizon throws away its shroud, Sweeping a stretching circle from the eye; Storms upon storms in quick succession crowd, And o'er the sameness of the purple sky Heaven paints, with hurried hand, wild hues of every dye.
At length it comes along the forest oaks, With sobbing ebbs, and uproar gathering high; The scared, hoarse raven on its cradle croaks, And stockdove-flocks in hurried terrors fly, While the blue hawk hangs o'er them in the sky.
— The hedger hastens from the storm begun, To seek a shelter that may keep him dry; And foresters low bent, the wind to shun, Scarce hear amid the strife the poacher's muttering gun.
The ploughman hears its humming rage begin, And hies for shelter from his naked toil; Buttoning his doublet closer to his chin, He bends and scampers o'er the elting soil, While clouds above him in wild fury boil, And winds drive heavily the beating rain; He turns his back to catch his breath awhile, Then ekes his speed and faces it again, To seek the shepherd's hut beside the rushy plain.
The boy, that scareth from the spiry wheat The melancholy crow—in hurry weaves, Beneath an ivied tree, his sheltering seat, Of rushy flags and sedges tied in sheaves, Or from the field a shock of stubble thieves.
There he doth dithering sit, and entertain His eyes with marking the storm-driven leaves; Oft spying nests where he spring eggs had ta'en, And wishing in his heart 'twas summer-time again.
Thus wears the month along, in checker'd moods, Sunshine and shadows, tempests loud, and calms; One hour dies silent o'er the sleepy woods, The next wakes loud with unexpected storms; A dreary nakedness the field deforms— Yet many a rural sound, and rural sight, Lives in the village still about the farms, Where toil's rude uproar hums from morn till night Noises, in which the ears of Industry delight.
At length the stir of rural labour's still, And Industry her care awhile forgoes; When Winter comes in earnest to fulfil His yearly task, at bleak November's close, And stops the plough, and hides the field in snows; When frost locks up the stream in chill delay, And mellows on the hedge the jetty sloes, For little birds—then Toil hath time for play, And nought but threshers' flails awake the dreary day.

Black Bonnet

 A day of seeming innocence, 
A glorious sun and sky, 
And, just above my picket fence, 
Black Bonnet passing by.
In knitted gloves and quaint old dress, Without a spot or smirch, Her worn face lit with peacefulness, Old Granny goes to church.
Her hair is richly white, like milk, That long ago was fair -- And glossy still the old black silk She keeps for "chapel wear"; Her bonnet, of a bygone style, That long has passed away, She must have kept a weary while Just as it is to-day.
The parasol of days gone by -- Old days that seemed the best -- The hymn and prayer books carried high Against her warm, thin breast; As she had clasped -- come smiles come tears, Come hardship, aye, and worse -- On market days, through faded years, The slender household purse.
Although the road is rough and steep, She takes it with a will, For, since she hushed her first to sleep Her way has been uphill.
Instinctively I bare my head (A sinful one, alas!) Whene'er I see, by church bells led, Brave Old Black Bonnet pass.
For she has known the cold and heat And dangers of the Track: Has fought bush-fires to save the wheat And little home Out Back.
By barren creeks the Bushman loves, By stockyard, hut, and pen, The withered hands in those old gloves Have done the work of men.

They called it "Service" long ago When Granny yet was young, And in the chapel, sweet and low, As girls her daughters sung.
And when in church she bends her head (But not as others do) She sees her loved ones, and her dead And hears their voices too.
Fair as the Saxons in her youth, Not forward, and not shy; And strong in healthy life and truth As after years went by: She often laughed with sinners vain, Yet passed from faith to sight -- God gave her beauty back again The more her hair grew white.
She came out in the Early Days, (Green seas, and blue -- and grey) -- The village fair, and English ways, Seemed worlds and worlds away.
She fought the haunting loneliness Where brooding gum trees stood; And won through sickness and distress As Englishwomen could.

But not alone; for on each side A little dot attends In snowy frock and sash of pride, And these are Granny's friends.
To them her mind is clear and bright, Her old ideas are new; They know her "real talk" is right, Her "fairy talk" is true.
And they converse as grown-ups may, When all the news is told; The one so wisely young to-day, The two so wisely old.
At home, with dinner waiting there, She smooths her hair and face, And puts her bonnet by with care And dons a cap of lace.
The table minds its p's and q's Lest one perchance be hit By some rare dart which is a part Of her old-fashioned wit.

Break of Day

 There seemed a smell of autumn in the air 
At the bleak end of night; he shivered there 
In a dank, musty dug-out where he lay, 
Legs wrapped in sand-bags,—lumps of chalk and clay 
Spattering his face.
Dry-mouthed, he thought, ‘To-day We start the damned attack; and, Lord knows why, Zero’s at nine; how bloody if I’m done in Under the freedom of that morning sky!’ And then he coughed and dozed, cursing the din.
Was it the ghost of autumn in that smell Of underground, or God’s blank heart grown kind, That sent a happy dream to him in hell?— Where men are crushed like clods, and crawl to find Some crater for their wretchedness; who lie In outcast immolation, doomed to die Far from clean things or any hope of cheer, Cowed anger in their eyes, till darkness brims And roars into their heads, and they can hear Old childish talk, and tags of foolish hymns.
He sniffs the chilly air; (his dreaming starts), He’s riding in a dusty Sussex lane In quiet September; slowly night departs; And he’s a living soul, absolved from pain.
Beyond the brambled fences where he goes Are glimmering fields with harvest piled in sheaves, And tree-tops dark against the stars grown pale; Then, clear and shrill, a distant farm-cock crows; And there’s a wall of mist along the vale Where willows shake their watery-sounding leaves, He gazes on it all, and scarce believes That earth is telling its old peaceful tale; He thanks the blessed world that he was born.

Then, far away, a lonely note of the horn.
They’re drawing the Big Wood! Unlatch the gate, And set Golumpus going on the grass; He knows the corner where it’s best to wait And hear the crashing woodland chorus pass; The corner where old foxes make their track To the Long Spinney; that’s the place to be.
The bracken shakes below an ivied tree, And then a cub looks out; and ‘Tally-o-back!’ He bawls, and swings his thong with volleying crack,— All the clean thrill of autumn in his blood, And hunting surging through him like a flood In joyous welcome from the untroubled past; While the war drifts away, forgotten at last.
Now a red, sleepy sun above the rim Of twilight stares along the quiet weald, And the kind, simple country shines revealed In solitudes of peace, no longer dim.
The old horse lifts his face and thanks the light, Then stretches down his head to crop the green.
All things that he has loved are in his sight; The places where his happiness has been Are in his eyes, his heart, and they are good.

The Two Kings

 King Eochaid came at sundown to a wood
Westward of Tara.
Hurrying to his queen He had outridden his war-wasted men That with empounded cattle trod the mire, And where beech-trees had mixed a pale green light With the ground-ivy's blue, he saw a stag Whiter than curds, its eyes the tint of the sea.
Because it stood upon his path and seemed More hands in height than any stag in the world He sat with tightened rein and loosened mouth Upon his trembling horse, then drove the spur; But the stag stooped and ran at him, and passed, Rending the horse's flank.
King Eochaid reeled, Then drew his sword to hold its levelled point Against the stag.
When horn and steel were met The horn resounded as though it had been silver, A sweet, miraculous, terrifying sound.
Horn locked in sword, they tugged and struggled there As though a stag and unicorn were met Among the African Mountains of the Moon, Until at last the double horns, drawn backward, Butted below the single and so pierced The entrails of the horse.
Dropping his sword King Eochaid seized the horns in his strong hands And stared into the sea-green eye, and so Hither and thither to and fro they trod Till all the place was beaten into mire.
The strong thigh and the agile thigh were met, The hands that gathered up the might of the world, And hoof and horn that had sucked in their speed Amid the elaborate wilderness of the air.
Through bush they plunged and over ivied root, And where the stone struck fire, while in the leaves A squirrel whinnied and a bird screamed out; But when at last he forced those sinewy flanks Against a beech-bole, he threw down the beast And knelt above it with drawn knife.
On the instant It vanished like a shadow, and a cry So mournful that it seemed the cry of one Who had lost some unimaginable treasure Wandered between the blue and the green leaf And climbed into the air, crumbling away, Till all had seemed a shadow or a vision But for the trodden mire, the pool of blood, The disembowelled horse.
King Eochaid ran Toward peopled Tara, nor stood to draw his breath Until he came before the painted wall, The posts of polished yew, circled with bronze, Of the great door; but though the hanging lamps Showed their faint light through the unshuttered windows, Nor door, nor mouth, nor slipper made a noise, Nor on the ancient beaten paths, that wound From well-side or from plough-land, was there noisc; Nor had there been the noise of living thing Before him or behind, but that far off On the horizon edge bellowed the herds.
Knowing that silence brings no good to kings, And mocks returning victory, he passed Between the pillars with a beating heart And saw where in the midst of the great hall pale-faced, alone upon a bench, Edain Sat upright with a sword before her feet.
Her hands on either side had gripped the bench.
Her eyes were cold and steady, her lips tight.
Some passion had made her stone.
Hearing a foot She started and then knew whose foot it was; But when he thought to take her in his arms She motioned him afar, and rose and spoke: 'I have sent among the fields or to the woods The fighting-men and servants of this house, For I would have your judgment upon one Who is self-accused.
If she be innocent She would not look in any known man's face Till judgment has been given, and if guilty, Would never look again on known man's face.
' And at these words hc paled, as she had paled, Knowing that he should find upon her lips The meaning of that monstrous day.
Then she: 'You brought me where your brother Ardan sat Always in his one seat, and bid me care him Through that strange illness that had fixed him there.
And should he die to heap his burial-mound And catve his name in Ogham.
' Eochaid said, 'He lives?' 'He lives and is a healthy man.
' 'While I have him and you it matters little What man you have lost, what evil you have found.
' 'I bid them make his bed under this roof And carried him his food with my own hands, And so the weeks passed by.
But when I said, "What is this trouble?" he would answer nothing, Though always at my words his trouble grew; And I but asked the more, till he cried out, Weary of many questions: "There are things That make the heart akin to the dumb stone.
" Then I replied, "Although you hide a secret, Hopeless and dear, or terrible to think on, Speak it, that I may send through the wide world For Medicine.
" Thereon he cried aloud "Day after day you question me, and I, Because there is such a storm amid my thoughts I shall be carried in the gust, command, Forbid, beseech and waste my breath.
" Then I: "Although the thing that you have hid were evil, The speaking of it could be no great wrong, And evil must it be, if done 'twere worse Than mound and stone that keep all virtue in, And loosen on us dreams that waste our life, Shadows and shows that can but turn the brain.
" but finding him still silent I stooped down And whispering that none but he should hear, Said, "If a woman has put this on you, My men, whether it please her or displease, And though they have to cross the Loughlan waters And take her in the middle of armed men, Shall make her look upon her handiwork, That she may quench the rick she has fired; and though She may have worn silk clothes, or worn a crown, She'II not be proud, knowing within her heart That our sufficient portion of the world Is that we give, although it be brief giving, Happiness to children and to men.
" Then he, driven by his thought beyond his thought, And speaking what he would not though he would, Sighed, "You, even you yourself, could work the cure!" And at those words I rose and I went out And for nine days he had food from other hands, And for nine days my mind went whirling round The one disastrous zodiac, muttering That the immedicable mound's beyond Our questioning, beyond our pity even.
But when nine days had gone I stood again Before his chair and bending down my head I bade him go when all his household slept To an old empty woodman's house that's hidden Westward of Tara, among the hazel-trees -- For hope would give his limbs the power -- and await A friend that could, he had told her, work his cure And would be no harsh friend.
When night had deepened, I groped my way from beech to hazel wood, Found that old house, a sputtering torch within, And stretched out sleeping on a pile of skins Ardan, and though I called to him and tried To Shake him out of sleep, I could not rouse him.
I waited till the night was on the turn, Then fearing that some labourer, on his way To plough or pasture-land, might see me there, Went out.
Among the ivy-covered rocks, As on the blue light of a sword, a man Who had unnatural majesty, and eyes Like the eyes of some great kite scouring the woods, Stood on my path.
Trembling from head to foot I gazed at him like grouse upon a kite; But with a voice that had unnatural music, "A weary wooing and a long," he said, "Speaking of love through other lips and looking Under the eyelids of another, for it was my craft That put a passion in the sleeper there, And when I had got my will and drawn you here, Where I may speak to you alone, my craft Sucked up the passion out of him again And left mere sleep.
He'll wake when the sun wakes, push out his vigorous limbs and rub his eyes, And wonder what has ailed him these twelve months.
" I cowered back upon the wall in terror, But that sweet-sounding voice ran on: "Woman, I was your husband when you rode the air, Danced in the whirling foam and in the dust, In days you have not kept in memory, Being betrayed into a cradle, and I come That I may claim you as my wife again.
" I was no longer terrified -- his voice Had half awakened some old memory -- Yet answered him, "I am King Eochaid's wife And with him have found every happiness Women can find.
" With a most masterful voice, That made the body seem as it were a string Under a bow, he cried, "What happiness Can lovers have that know their happiness Must end at the dumb stone? But where we build Our sudden palaces in the still air pleasure itself can bring no weariness.
Nor can time waste the cheek, nor is there foot That has grown weary of the wandering dance, Nor an unlaughing mouth, but mine that mourns, Among those mouths that sing their sweethearts' praise, Your empty bed.
" "How should I love," I answered, "Were it not that when the dawn has lit my bed And shown my husband sleeping there, I have sighcd, 'Your strength and nobleness will pass away'? Or how should love be worth its pains were it not That when he has fallen asleep within my atms, Being wearied out, I love in man the child? What can they know of love that do not know She builds her nest upon a narrow ledge Above a windy precipice?" Then he: "Seeing that when you come to the deathbed You must return, whether you would or no, This human life blotted from memory, Why must I live some thirty, forty years, Alone with all this useless happiness?" Thereon he seized me in his arms, but I Thrust him away with both my hands and cried, "Never will I believe there is any change Can blot out of my memory this life Sweetened by death, but if I could believe, That were a double hunger in my lips For what is doubly brief.
" And now the shape My hands were pressed to vanished suddenly.
I staggered, but a beech-tree stayed my fall, And clinging to it I could hear the cocks Crow upon Tara.
' King Eochaid bowed his head And thanked her for her kindness to his brother, For that she promised, and for that refused.
Thereon the bellowing of the empounded herds Rose round the walls, and through the bronze-ringed door Jostled and shouted those war-wasted men, And in the midst King Eochaid's brother stood, And bade all welcome, being ignorant.

Roses And Rue

 (To L.
L.
) Could we dig up this long-buried treasure, Were it worth the pleasure, We never could learn love's song, We are parted too long.
Could the passionate past that is fled Call back its dead, Could we live it all over again, Were it worth the pain! I remember we used to meet By an ivied seat, And you warbled each pretty word With the air of a bird; And your voice had a quaver in it, Just like a linnet, And shook, as the blackbird's throat With its last big note; And your eyes, they were green and grey Like an April day, But lit into amethyst When I stooped and kissed; And your mouth, it would never smile For a long, long while, Then it rippled all over with laughter Five minutes after.
You were always afraid of a shower, Just like a flower: I remember you started and ran When the rain began.
I remember I never could catch you, For no one could match you, You had wonderful, luminous, fleet, Little wings to your feet.
I remember your hair - did I tie it? For it always ran riot - Like a tangled sunbeam of gold: These things are old.
I remember so well the room, And the lilac bloom That beat at the dripping pane In the warm June rain; And the colour of your gown, It was amber-brown, And two yellow satin bows From your shoulders rose.
And the handkerchief of French lace Which you held to your face - Had a small tear left a stain? Or was it the rain? On your hand as it waved adieu There were veins of blue; In your voice as it said good-bye Was a petulant cry, 'You have only wasted your life.
' (Ah, that was the knife!) When I rushed through the garden gate It was all too late.
Could we live it over again, Were it worth the pain, Could the passionate past that is fled Call back its dead! Well, if my heart must break, Dear love, for your sake, It will break in music, I know, Poets' hearts break so.
But strange that I was not told That the brain can hold In a tiny ivory cell God's heaven and hell.

The New School

 (For My Mother)

The halls that were loud with the merry tread of 
young and careless feet
Are still with a stillness that is too drear to seem like holiday,
And never a gust of laughter breaks the calm of the dreaming street
Or rises to shake the ivied walls and frighten the doves away.
The dust is on book and on empty desk, and the tennis-racquet and balls Lie still in their lonely locker and wait for a game that is never played, And over the study and lecture-room and the river and meadow falls A stern peace, a strange peace, a peace that War has made.
For many a youthful shoulder now is gay with an epaulet, And the hand that was deft with a cricket-bat is defter with a sword, And some of the lads will laugh to-day where the trench is red and wet, And some will win on the bloody field the accolade of the Lord.
They have taken their youth and mirth away from the study and playing-ground To a new school in an alien land beneath an alien sky; Out in the smoke and roar of the fight their lessons and games are found, And they who were learning how to live are learning how to die.
And after the golden day has come and the war is at an end, A slab of bronze on the chapel wall will tell of the noble dead.
And every name on that radiant list will be the name of a friend, A name that shall through the centuries in grateful prayers be said.
And there will be ghosts in the old school, brave ghosts with laughing eyes, On the field with a ghostly cricket-bat, by the stream with a ghostly rod; They will touch the hearts of the living with a flame that sanctifies, A flame that they took with strong young hands from the altar-fires of God.

Meadowsweet

 Through grass, through amber'd cornfields, our slow Stream-- 
Fringed with its flags and reeds and rushes tall, 
And Meadowsweet, the chosen of them all 
By wandering children, yellow as the cream 
Of those great cows--winds on as in a dream 
By mill and footbridge, hamlet old and small 
(Red roofs, gray tower), and sees the sunset gleam 
On mullion'd windows of an ivied Hall.
There, once upon a time, the heavy King Trod out its perfume from the Meadowsweet, Strown like a woman's love beneath his feet, In stately dance or jovial banqueting, When all was new; and in its wayfaring Our Streamlet curved, as now, through grass and wheat.

THE MONK'S WALK

In this sombre garden close
What has come and passed, who knows?
What red passion, what white pain
Haunted this dim walk in vain?
Underneath the ivied wall,
Where the silent shadows fall,[Pg 210]
Lies the pathway chill and damp
Where the world-quit dreamers tramp.
Just across, where sunlight burns,
Smiling at the mourning ferns,
Stand the roses, side by side,
Nodding in their useless pride.
Ferns and roses, who shall say
What you witness day by day?
Covert smile or dropping eye,
As the monks go pacing by.
Has the novice come to-day
Here beneath the wall to pray?
Has the young monk, lately chidden,
Sung his lyric, sweet, forbidden?
Tell me, roses, did you note
That pale father's throbbing throat?
Did you hear him murmur, "Love!"
As he kissed a faded glove?
Mourning ferns, pray tell me why
Shook you with that passing sigh?
Is it that you chanced to spy
Something in the Abbot's eye?
Here no dream, nor thought of sin,
Where no worlding enters in;
Here no longing, no desire,
Heat nor flame of earthly fire.
Branches waving green above,
Whisper naught of life nor love;
Softened winds that seem a breath,
Perfumed, bring no fear of death.
Is it living thus to live?
Has life nothing more to give?
Ah, no more of smile or sigh—
Life, the world, and love, good-bye.
Gray, and passionless, and dim,
Echoing of the solemn hymn,
Lies the walk, 'twixt fern and rose,

Little Puddleton

 I

Let others sing of Empire and of pomp beyond the sea,
A song of Little Puddleton is good enough for me,
A song of kindly living, and of coming home to tea.
I seldom read the papers, so I don't know what goes on.
I go to bed at sunset, and I leap alert at dawn, To gossip with my garden, which I'll have you understand, Is the neatest and the sweetest little garden in the land; A span of sunny quietude, with walls so high and stout, They shut me in from all the world, and shut the whole world out, So that its sad bewilderment seems less than true to me: As placid as a pool I live, as tranquil as a tree; And all its glory I would give for glint of linnet's wings; My cabbages are more to me than continents and kings.
Dominion have I of my own, where feud and faction cease, A heaven of tranquillity, a paradise of peace.
II Let continents be bathed in blood and cities leap in flame; The life of Little Puddleton goes on and on the same; Its ritual we follow, as we play a pleasant game.
The village wortkies sit and smoke their long-stemmed pipes of clay.
And cheerily they nod to me, and pass the time of day.
We talk of pigs and clover, and the prospect of the crops, And the price of eggs and butter - there the conversation drops.
For in a doubt-distracted world I keep the rustic touch; I think it better not to think too deeply nor too much; But just to dream and take delight in all I hear and see, The tinker in the tavern, with his trollop on his knee; The ivied church, the anvil clang, the geese upon the green, The drowsy noon, the hush of eve so holy and screne.
This is my world, then back again with heart of joy I go To cottage walls of mellow stain, and garden all aglow.
III For all I've been and all I've seen I have no vain regret One comes to Little Puddleton, contented to forget; Accepting village values, immemorially set.
I did not make this world and so it's not my job to mend; But I have fought for fifty years and now I hear the end; And I am heart-faint from the fight, and claim the right to rest, And dare to hope the last of life will prove to be the best.
For there have I four sturdy walls with low and humble thatch, A smiling little orchard and a big potato patch.
And so with hoe in hand I stand and mock the dubious sky; let revolution rock the land, serene, secure am I.
I grow my simple food, I groom my lettuce and my beans; I feast in colour, form and song, and ask not what it means.
Beauty suffiices in itself; then when my strength is spent, like simple hind with empty mind, I cultivate content.
Behold then Little Puddleton, the end of all my dreams.
Not much to show for life, I know; yet O how sweet it seems! For when defeated day goes down in carnage in the West, How blesses sanctuary is, and peace and love and rest!
