To Those Born After

 To the cities I came in a time of disorder
That was ruled by hunger.
I sheltered with the people in a time of uproar And then I joined in their rebellion.

Allegory Of The Cave

 He climbed toward the blinding light
and when his eyes adjusted
he looked down and could see

his fellow prisoners captivated
by shadows; everything he had believed
was false.
And he was suddenly in the 20th century, in the sunlight and violence of history, encumbered by knowledge.
Only a hero would dare return with the truth.
So from the cave's upper reaches, removed from harm, he called out the disturbing news.
What lovely echoes, the prisoners said, what a fine musical place to live.
He spelled it out, then, in clear prose on paper scraps, which he floated down.
But in the semi-dark they read his words with the indulgence of those who seldom read: It's about my father's death, one of them said.
No, said the others, it's a joke.
By this time he no longer was sure of what he'd seen.
Wasn't sunlight a shadow too? Wasn't there always a source behind a source? He just stood there, confused, a man who had moved to larger errors, without a prayer.

A Moments Indulgence

 I ask for a moment's indulgence to sit by thy side.
The works that I have in hand I will finish afterwards.
Away from the sight of thy face my heart knows no rest nor respite, and my work becomes an endless toil in a shoreless sea of toil.

Enthusiasm

In The Beginning

 Ever since those wondrous days of Creation
our Lord God sleeps: we are His sleep.
And He accepted this in His indulgence, resigned to rest among the distant stars.
Our actions stopped Him from reacting, for His fist-tight hand is numbed by sleep, and the times brought in the age of heroes during which our dark hearts plundered Him.
Sometimes He appears as if tormented, and His body jerks as if plagued by pain; but these spells are always outweighed by the number of His countless other worlds.

ORIGINAL PREFACE

 I feel no small reluctance in venturing to give to the public a 
work of the character of that indicated by the title-page to the 
present volume; for, difficult as it must always be to render satisfactorily 
into one's own tongue the writings of the bards of other lands, 
the responsibility assumed by the translator is immeasurably increased 
when he attempts to transfer the thoughts of those great men, who 
have lived for all the world and for all ages, from the language 
in which they were originally clothed, to one to which they may 
as yet have been strangers.
Preeminently is this the case with Goethe, the most masterly of all the master minds of modern times, whose name is already inscribed on the tablets of immortality, and whose fame already extends over the earth, although as yet only in its infancy.
Scarcely have two decades passed away since he ceased to dwell among men, yet he now stands before us, not as a mere individual, like those whom the world is wont to call great, but as a type, as an emblem--the recognised emblem and representative of the human mind in its present stage of culture and advancement.
Among the infinitely varied effusions of Goethe's pen, perhaps there are none which are of as general interest as his Poems, which breathe the very spirit of Nature, and embody the real music of the feelings.
In Germany, they are universally known, and are considered as the most delightful of his works.
Yet in this country, this kindred country, sprung from the same stem, and so strongly resembling her sister in so many points, they are nearly unknown.
Almost the only poetical work of the greatest Poet that the world has seen for ages, that is really and generally read in England, is Faust, the translations of which are almost endless; while no single person has as yet appeared to attempt to give, in an English dress, in any collective or systematic manner, those smaller productions of the genius of Goethe which it is the object of the present volume to lay before the reader, whose indulgence is requested for its many imperfections.
In addition to the beauty of the language in which the Poet has given utterance to his thoughts, there is a depth of meaning in those thoughts which is not easily discoverable at first sight, and the translator incurs great risk of overlooking it, and of giving a prosaic effect to that which in the original contains the very essence of poetry.
It is probably this difficulty that has deterred others from undertaking the task I have set myself, and in which I do not pretend to do more than attempt to give an idea of the minstrelsy of one so unrivalled, by as truthful an interpretation of it as lies in my power.
The principles which have guided me on the present occasion are the same as those followed in the translation of Schiller's complete Poems that was published by me in 1851, namely, as literal a rendering of the original as is consistent with good English, and also a very strict adherence to the metre of the original.
Although translators usually allow themselves great license in both these points, it appears to me that by so doing they of necessity destroy the very soul of the work they profess to translate.
In fact, it is not a translation, but a paraphrase that they give.
It may perhaps be thought that the present translations go almost to the other extreme, and that a rendering of metre, line for line, and word for word, makes it impossible to preserve the poetry of the original both in substance and in sound.
But experience has convinced me that it is not so, and that great fidelity is even the most essential element of success, whether in translating poetry or prose.
It was therefore very satisfactory to me to find that the principle laid down by me to myself in translating Schiller met with the very general, if not universal, approval of the reader.
At the same time, I have endeavoured to profit in the case of this, the younger born of the two attempts made by me to transplant the muse of Germany to the shores of Britain, by the criticisms, whether friendly or hostile, that have been evoked or provoked by the appearance of its elder brother.
As already mentioned, the latter contained the whole of the Poems of Schiller.
It is impossible, in anything like the same compass, to give all the writings of Goethe comprised under the general title of Gedichte, or poems.
They contain between 30,000 and 40,000 verses, exclusive of his plays.
and similar works.
Very many of these would be absolutely without interest to the English reader,--such as those having only a local application, those addressed to individuals, and so on.
Others again, from their extreme length, could only be published in separate volumes.
But the impossibility of giving all need form no obstacle to giving as much as possible; and it so happens that the real interest of Goethe's Poems centres in those classes of them which are not too diffuse to run any risk when translated of offending the reader by their too great number.
Those by far the more generally admired are the Songs and Ballads, which are about 150 in number, and the whole of which are contained in this volume (with the exception of one or two of the former, which have been, on consideration, left out by me owing to their trifling and uninteresting nature).
The same may be said of the Odes, Sonnets, Miscellaneous Poems, &c.
In addition to those portions of Goethe's poetical works which are given in this complete form, specimens of the different other classes of them, such as the Epigrams, Elegies, &c.
, are added, as well as a collection of the various Songs found in his Plays, making a total number of about 400 Poems, embraced in the present volume.
A sketch of the life of Goethe is prefixed, in order that the reader may have before him both the Poet himself and the Poet's offspring, and that he may see that the two are but one--that Goethe lives in his works, that his works lived in him.
The dates of the different Poems are appended throughout, that of the first publication being given, when that of the composition is unknown.
The order of arrangement adopted is that of the authorized German editions.
As Goethe would never arrange them himself in the chronological order of their composition, it has become impossible to do so, now that he is dead.
The plan adopted in the present volume would therefore seem to be the best, as it facilitates reference to the original.
The circumstances attending or giving rise to the production of any of the Poems will be found specified in those cases in which they have been ascertained by me.
Having said thus much by way of explanation, I now leave the book to speak for itself, and to testify to its own character.
Whether viewed with a charitable eye by the kindly reader, who will make due allowance for the difficulties attending its execution, or received by the critic, who will judge of it only by its own merits, with the unfriendly welcome which it very probably deserves, I trust that I shall at least be pardoned for making an attempt, a failure in which does not necessarily imply disgrace, and which, by leading the way, may perhaps become the means of inducing some abler and more worthy (but not more earnest) labourer to enter upon the same field, the riches of which will remain unaltered and undiminished in value, even although they may be for the moment tarnished by the hands of the less skilful workman who first endeavours to transplant them to a foreign soil.

Very Seldom

 He's an old man.
Used up and bent, crippled by time and indulgence, he slowly walks along the narrow street.
But when he goes inside his house to hide the shambles of his old age, his mind turns to the share in youth that still belongs to him.
His verse is now recited by young men.
His visions come before their lively eyes.
Their healthy sensual minds, their shapely taut bodies stir to his perception of the beautiful.

Richard Pigott the Forger

 Richard Pigott, the forger, was a very bad man,
And to gainsay it there's nobody can,
Because for fifty years he pursued a career of deceit,
And as a forger few men with him could compete.
For by forged letters he tried to accuse Parnell For the Phoenix Park murders, but mark what befell.
When his conscience smote him he confessed to the fraud, And the thought thereof no doubt drove him mad.
Then he fled from London without delay, Knowing he wouldn't be safe there night nor day, And embarked on board a ship bound for Spain, Thinking he would escape detection there, but 'twas all in vain.
Because while staying at a hotel in Spain He appeared to the landlord to be a little insane.
And he noticed he was always seemingly in dread, Like a person that had committed a murder and afterwards fled.
And when arrested in the hotel he seemed very cool, Just like an innocent schoolboy going to school.
And he said to the detectives, "Wait until my portmanteau I've got.
" And while going for his portmanteau, himself he shot.
So perished Richard Pigott, a forger bold, Who tried to swear Parnell's life away for the sake of gold, But the vengeance of God overtook him, And Parnell's life has been saved, which I consider no sin.
Because he was a man that was very fond of gold, Not altogether of the miser's craving, I've been told, But a craving desire after good meat and drink, And to obtain good things by foul means he never did shrink.
He could eat and drink more than two ordinary men, And to keep up his high living by foul means we must him condemn, Because his heart's desire in life was to fare well, And to keep up his good living he tried to betray Parnell.
Yes, the villain tried hard to swear his life away, But God protected him by night and by day, And during his long trial in London, without dismay, The noble patriot never flinched nor tried to run away.
Richard Pigott was a man that was blinded by his own conceit.
And would have robbed his dearest friend all for good meat, To satisfy his gluttony and his own sensual indulgence, Which the inhuman monster considered no great offence.
But now in that undiscovered country he's getting his reward, And I'm sure few people have for him little regard, Because he was a villain of the deepest dye, And but few people for him will heave a sigh.
When I think of such a monster my blood runs cold, He was like Monteith, that betrayed Wallace for English gold; But I hope Parnell will prosper for many a day In despite of his enemies that fried to swear his life away.
Oh! think of his sufferings and how manfully he did stand.
During his long trial in London, to me it seems grand.
To see him standing at the bar, innocent and upright, Quite cool and defiant, a most beautiful sight.
And to the noble patriot, honour be it said, He never was the least afraid To speak on behalf of Home Rule for Ireland, But like a true patriot nobly he did take his stand.
And may he go on conquering and conquer to the end, And hoping that God will the right defend, And protect him always by night and by day, At home and abroad when far away.
And now since he's set free, Ireland's sons should rejoice And applaud him to the skies, all with one voice, For he's their patriot, true and bold, And an honest, true-hearted gentleman be it told.

The False Gods

 “We are false and evanescent, and aware of our deceit, 
From the straw that is our vitals to the clay that is our feet.

The Heart of Australia

 When the wars of the world seemed ended, and silent the distant drum, 
Ten years ago in Australia, I wrote of a war to come: 
And I pictured Australians fighting as their fathers fought of old 
For the old things, pride or country, for God or the Devil or gold.
And they lounged on the rim of Australia in the peace that had come to last, And they laughed at my "cavalry charges" for such things belonged to the past; Then our wise men smiled with indulgence – ere the swift years proved me right – Saying: "What shall Australia fight for? And whom shall Australia fight?" I wrote of the unlocked rivers in the days when my heart was full, And I pleaded for irrigation where they sacrifice all for wool.
I pictured Australia fighting when the coast had been lost and won – With arsenals west of the mountains and every spur its gun.
And what shall Australia fight for? The reason may yet be found, When strange shells scatter the wickets and burst on the football ground.
And "Who shall invade Australia?" let the wisdom of ages say "The friend of a further future – or the ally of yesterday!" Aye! What must Australia fight for? In the strife that never shall cease, She must fight for her work unfinished: she must fight for her life and peace, For the sins of the older nations.
She must fight for her own reward.
She has taken the sword in her blindness and shall live or die by the sword.
But the statesman, the churchman, the scholar still peer through their glasses dim And they see no cloud on the future as they roost on Australia's rim: Where the farmer works with the lumpers and the drover drives a dray, And the shearer on Garden Island is shifting a hill to-day.
Had we used the wealth we have squandered and the land that we kept from the plough, A prosperous Federal City would be over the mountains now, With farms that sweep to horizons and gardens where plains lay bare, And the bulk of the population and the Heart of Australia there.
Had we used the time we have wasted and the gold we have thrown away, The pick of the world's mechanics would be over the range to-day – In the Valley of Coal and Iron where the breeze from the bush comes down, And where thousands of makers of all things should be happy in Factory Town.
They droned on the rim of Australia, the wise men who never could learn; Our substance we sent to the nations, and their shoddy we bought in return.
In the end, shall our soldiers fight naked, no help for them under the sun – And never a cartridge to stick in the breech of a Brummagem gun? With the Wars of the World coming near us the wise men are waking to-day.
Hurry out ammunition from England! Mount guns on the cliffs while you may! And God pardon our sins as a people if Invasion's unmerciful hand Should strike at the heart of Australia drought-cramped on the verge of the land.
