Things I Didnt Know I Loved

 it's 1962 March 28th
I'm sitting by the window on the Prague-Berlin train 
night is falling
I never knew I liked
night descending like a tired bird on a smoky wet plain 
I don't like
comparing nightfall to a tired bird

I didn't know I loved the earth
can someone who hasn't worked the earth love it 
I've never worked the earth
it must be my only Platonic love

and here I've loved rivers all this time
whether motionless like this they curl skirting the hills
European hills crowned with chateaus
or whether stretched out flat as far as the eye can see
I know you can't wash in the same river even once
I know the river will bring new lights you'll never see
I know we live slightly longer than a horse but not nearly as long as a crow
I know this has troubled people before
 and will trouble those after me
I know all this has been said a thousand times before 
 and will be said after me

I didn't know I loved the sky 
cloudy or clear
the blue vault Andrei studied on his back at Borodino
in prison I translated both volumes of War and Peace into Turkish 
I hear voices

In the Home Stretch

 SHE stood against the kitchen sink, and looked
Over the sink out through a dusty window
At weeds the water from the sink made tall.
She wore her cape; her hat was in her hand.
Behind her was confusion in the room, Of chairs turned upside down to sit like people In other chairs, and something, come to look, For every room a house has—parlor, bed-room, And dining-room—thrown pell-mell in the kitchen.
And now and then a smudged, infernal face Looked in a door behind her and addressed Her back.

Alan Dugan Telling Me I Have A Problem With Time

 He reads my latest attempt at a poem
and is silent for a long time, until it feels
like that night we waited for Apollo,
my mother wandering in and out of her bedroom, asking,
Haven't they landed yet? At last
Dugan throws it on the table and says,
This reads like a cheap detective novel
and I've got nothing to say about it.
It sits, naked and white, with everyone's eyes running over it.
The week before he'd said I had a problem with time, that in my poems everything kept happening at once.
In 1969, the voice of Mission Control told a man named Buzz that there was a bunch of guys turning blue down here on Earth, and now I can understand it was with anticipation, not sickness.
Next, Dugan says, Let's move on.
The attempted poem was about butterflies and my recurring desire to return to a place I've never been.
It was inspired by reading this in a National Geographic: monarchs stream northward from winter roosts in Mexico, laying their eggs atop milkweed to foster new generations along the way.
With the old monarchs gone (I took this line as the title) and all ties to the past ostensibly cut the unimaginable happens--butterflies that have never been to that plateau in Mexico roost there the next winter.

I saw this as a metaphor for a childhood I never had, until Dugan pointed out that metaphor has been dead for a hundred years.
A woman, new to the workshop, leans behind his back and whispers, I like it, but the silence is seamless, as deep as outer space.
That night in 1969 I could turn my head from the television and see the moon filling the one pane over the bed completely as we waited for Neil Armstrong to leave his footprints all over it.

Soliloquy in Circles

 Being a father
Is quite a bother.
You are as free as air With time to spare, You're a fiscal rocket With change in your pocket, And then one morn A child is born.
Your life has been runcible, Irresponsible, Like an arrow or javelin You've been constantly travelin'.
But mostly, I daresay, Without a chaise percée, To which by comparison Nothing's embarison.
But all children matures, Maybe even yours.
You improve them mentally And straighten them dentally, They grow tall as a lancer And ask questions you can't answer, And supply you with data About how everybody else wears lipstick sooner and stays up later, And if they are popular, The phone they monopular.
They scorn the dominion Of their parent's opinion, They're no longer corralable Once they find that you're fallible But after you've raised them and educated them and gowned them, They just take their little fingers and wrap you around them.
Being a father Is quite a bother, But I like it, rather.

I like it; privately I find esthetic satisfaction in these ceremonial removals from the category of received ideas to regions where pigeons' svelte smoke-velvet limousines, taxiing in whirligigs, reclaim a parking lot, and the bag-laden hermit woman, disencumbered of a greater incubus, the crush of unexamined attitudes, stoutly follows her routine, mining the mountainsides of our daily refuse for artifacts: subversive re-establishing with each arcane trash-basket dig the pleasures of the ruined.

In My Youth I Was a Tireless Dancer

 But now I pass
graveyards in a car.
The dead lie, unsuperstitiously, with their feet toward me-- please forgive me for saying the tombstones would not fancy their faces turned from the highway.

Voyages

 Pond snipe, bleached pine, rue weed, wart -- 
I walk by sedge and brown river rot 
to where the old lake boats went daily out.
All the ships are gone, the gray wharf fallen in upon itself.
Even the channel's grown over.
Once we set sail here for Bob-Lo, the Brewery Isles, Cleveland.
We would have gone as far as Niagara or headed out to open sea if the Captain said so, but the Captain drank.
Blood-eyed in the morning, coffee shaking in his hand, he'd plead to be put ashore or drowned, but no one heard.
Enormous in his long coat, Sinbad would take the helm and shout out orders swiped from pirate movies.
Once we docked north of Vermillion to meet a single spur of the old Ohio Western and sat for days waiting for a train, waiting for someone to claim the cargo or give us anything to take back, like the silver Cadillac roadster it was rumored we had once freighted by itself.
The others went foraging and left me with the Captain, locked up in the head and sober.
Two days passed, I counted eighty tankers pulling through the flat lake waters on their way, I counted blackbirds gathering at dusk in the low trees, clustered like bees.
I counted the hours from noon to noon and got nowhere.
At last the Captain slept.
I banked the fire, raised anchor, cast off, and jumping ship left her drifting out on the black bay.
I walked seven miles to the Interstate and caught a meat truck heading west, and came to over beer, hashbrowns, and fried eggs in a cafe northwest of Omaha.
I could write how the radio spoke of war, how the century was half its age, how dark clouds gathered in the passes up ahead, the dispossessed had clogged the roads, but none the less I alone made my way to the western waters, a foreign ship, another life, and disappeared from all Id known.
In fact I come home every year, I walk the same streets where I grew up, but now with my boys.
I settled down, just as you did, took a degree in library sciences, and got my present position with the county.
I'm supposed to believe something ended.
I'm supposed to be dried up.
I'm supposed to represent a yearning, but I like it the way it is.
Not once has the ocean wind changed and brought the taste of salt over the coastal hills and through the orchards to my back yard.
Not once have I wakened cold and scared out of a dreamless sleep into a dreamless life and cried and cried out for what I left behind.

Pipe Smoker

 Because I love the soothing weed
 And am of sober type,
I'd choose me for a friend in need
 A man who smokes a pipe.
A cove who hasn't much to say, And spits into the fire, Puffing like me a pipe of clay, Corn-cob or briar.
A chap original of thought, With cheery point of view, Who has of gumption quite a lot, And streaks of humour too.
He need not be a whiskered sage, With wisdom over-ripe: Just give me in the old of age A pal who smokes a pipe.
A cigarette may make for wit, Although I like it not; A good cigar, I must admit, Gives dignity to thought.
But as my glass of grog I sip I never, never gripe If I have for companionship A guy who smokes a pipe.
