In Memory of Radio

Who has ever stopped to think of the divinity of Lamont Cranston?
(Only jack Kerouac, that I know of: & me.
The rest of you probably had on WCBS and Kate Smith,
Or something equally unattractive.)

What can I say?
It is better to haved loved and lost
Than to put linoleum in your living rooms?

Am I a sage or something?
Mandrake's hypnotic gesture of the week?
(Remember, I do not have the healing powers of Oral Roberts...
I cannot, like F. J. Sheen, tell you how to get saved & rich!
I cannot even order you to the gaschamber satori like Hitler or Goddy Knight)

& love is an evil word.
Turn it backwards/see, see what I mean?
An evol word. & besides
who understands it?
I certainly wouldn't like to go out on that kind of limb.

Saturday mornings we listened to the Red Lantern & his undersea folk.
At 11, Let's Pretend
& we did
& I, the poet, still do. Thank God!

What was it he used to say (after the transformation when he was safe
& invisible & the unbelievers couldn't throw stones?) "Heh, heh, heh.
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows."

Pictures of Home

  In the red-roofed stucco house
of my childhood, the dining room 
was screened off by folding doors 
with small glass panes.
Our neighbors the Bertins, who barely escaped Hitler, often joined us at table.
One night their daughter said, In Vienna our dining room had doors like these.
For a moment, we all sat quite still.
And when Nath Nong, who has to live in Massachusetts now, saw a picture of green Cambodian fields she said, My father have animal like this, name krebey English? I told her, Water buffalo.
She said, Very very good animal.
She put her finger on the picture of the water buffalo and spoke its Khmer name once more.
So today, when someone (my ex- husband) sends me a shiny picture of a church in Santa Cruz that lost its steeple in the recent earthquake there's no reason at all for my throat to ache at the sight of a Pacific-blue sky and an old church three thousand miles away, because if I can only save enough money I can go back there any time and stay as long as I want.

January 2

 The old war is over the new one has begun
between drivers and pedestrians on a Friday
in New York light is the variable and structure
the content according to Rodrigo Moynihan's
self-portraits at the Robert Miller Gallery where
the painter is serially pictured holding a canvas,
painting his mirror image, shirtless in summer,
with a nude, etc.
, it's two o'clock and I'm walking at top speed from the huddled tourists yearning to be a mass to Les Halles on Park and 28th for a Salade Niçoise I've just watched The Singing Detective all six hours of it and can't get it out of my mind, the scarecrow that turns into Hitler, the sad-eyed father wearing a black arm-band, the yellow umbrellas as Bing Crosby's voice comes out of Michael Gambon's mouth, "you've got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive, e-lim-inate the negative" advice as sound today as in 1945 though it also remains true that the only thing to do with good advice is pass it on

Dead March

 Under the bunker, where the reek of kerosene 
Prepared the marriage rite, leader and whore, 
Imperfect kindling even in this wind, burn on.
Someone in uniform hums Brahms.
Servants prepare Eyewitness stories as the night comes down, as smoking coals await Boots on the stone, the occupying troops.
Howl ministers.
Deep in Kyffhauser Mountain's underground, The Holy Roman Emperor snores on, in sleep enduring Seven centuries.
His long red beard Grows through the table to the floor.
He moves a little.
Far in the labyrinth, low thunder rumbles and dies out.
Twitch and lie still.
Is Hitler now in the Himalayas? We are in Cleveland, or Sioux Falls.
The architecture Seems like Omaha, the air pumped in from Düsseldorf.
Cold rain keeps dripping just outside the bars.
The testicles Burst on the table as the commissar Untwists the vise, removes his gloves, puts down Izvestia.
(Old saboteurs, controlled by Trotsky's Scheming and unconquered ghost, still threaten Novgorod.
) --And not far from the pits, these bones of ours, Burned, bleached, and splintering, are shoveled, ready for the fields.

In the Next Galaxy

In the Next Galaxy 
Things will be different.
No one will lose their sight, their hearing, their gallbladder.
It will be all Catskills with brand new wrap-around verandas.
The idea of Hitler will not have vibrated yet.
While back here, they are still cleaning out pockets of wrinkled Nazis hiding in Argentina.
But in the next galaxy, certain planets will have true blue skies and drinking water.

The Day Is A Poem (September 19 1939)

 This morning Hitler spoke in Danzig, we hear his voice.
A man of genius: that is, of amazing Ability, courage, devotion, cored on a sick child's soul, Heard clearly through the dog wrath, a sick child Wailing in Danzig; invoking destruction and wailing at it.
Here, the day was extremely hot; about noon A south wind like a blast from hell's mouth spilled a slight rain On the parched land, and at five a light earthquake Danced the house, no harm done.
Tonight I have been amusing myself Watching the blood-red moon droop slowly Into the black sea through bursts of dry lightning and distant thunder.
Well: the day is a poem: but too much Like one of Jeffers's, crusted with blood and barbaric omens, Painful to excess, inhuman as a hawk's cry.

Time Of Disturbance

 The best is, in war or faction or ordinary vindictive
 life, not to take sides.
Leave it for children, and the emotional rabble of the streets, to back their horse or support a brawler.
But if you are forced into it: remember that good and evil are as common as air, and like air shared By the panting belligerents; the moral indignation that hoarsens orators is mostly a fool.
Hold your nose and compromise; keep a cold mind.
Fight, if needs must; hate no one.
Do as God does, Or the tragic poets: they crush their man without hating him, their Lear or Hitler, and often save without love.
As for these quarrels, they are like the moon, recurrent and fantastic.
They have their beauty but night's is better.
It is better to be silent than make a noise.
It is better to strike dead than strike often.
It is better not to strike.

The Correspondence School Instructor Says Goodbye To His Poetry Students

 Goodbye, lady in Bangor, who sent me
snapshots of yourself, after definitely hinting
you were beautiful; goodbye,
Miami Beach urologist, who enclosed plain
brown envelopes for the return of your very
Clinical Sonnet; goodbye, manufacturer
of brassieres on the Coast, whose eclogues
give the fullest treatment in literature yet
to the sagging-breast motif; goodbye, you in San Quentin,
who wrote, "Being German my hero is Hitler,"
instead of "Sincerely yours," at the end of long,
neat-scripted letter demolishing
the pre-Raphaelites:

I swear to you, it was just my way
of cheering myself up, as I licked
the stamped, self-addressed envelopes,
the game I had
of trying to guess which one of you, this time,
had poisoned his glue.
I did care.
I did read each poem entire.
I did say what I thought was the truth in the mildest words I know.
And now, in this poem, or chopped prose, not any better, I realize, than those troubled lines I kept sending back to you, I have to say I am relieved it is over: at the end I could feel only pity for that urge toward more life your poems kept smothering in words, the smell of which, days later, would tingle in your nostrils as new, God-given impulses to write.
Goodbye, you who are, for me, the postmarks again of shattered towns-Xenia, Burnt Cabins, Hornell- their loneliness given away in poems, only their solitude kept.

At Pleasure Bay

 In the willows along the river at Pleasure Bay
A catbird singing, never the same phrase twice.
Here under the pines a little off the road In 1927 the Chief of Police And Mrs.
W.
killed themselves together, Sitting in a roadster.
Ancient unshaken pilings And underwater chunks of still-mortared brick In shapes like bits of puzzle strew the bottom Where the landing was for Price's Hotel and Theater.
And here's where boats blew two blasts for the keeper To shunt the iron swing-bridge.
He leaned on the gears Like a skipper in the hut that housed the works And the bridge moaned and turned on its middle pier To let them through.
In the middle of the summer Two or three cars might wait for the iron trusswork Winching aside, with maybe a child to notice A name on the stern in black-and-gold on white, Sandpiper, Patsy Ann, Do Not Disturb, The Idler.
If a boat was running whiskey, The bridge clanged shut behind it as it passed And opened up again for the Coast Guard cutter Slowly as a sundial, and always jammed halfway.
The roadbed whole, but opened like a switch, The river pulling and coursing between the piers.
Never the same phrase twice, the catbird filling The humid August evening near the inlet With borrowed music that he melds and changes.
Dragonflies and sandflies, frogs in the rushes, two bodies Not moving in the open car among the pines, A sliver of story.
The tenor at Price's Hotel, In clown costume, unfurls the sorrow gathered In ruffles at his throat and cuffs, high quavers That hold like splashes of light on the dark water, The aria's closing phrases, changed and fading.
And after a gap of quiet, cheers and applause Audible in the houses across the river, Some in the audience weeping as if they had melted Inside the music.
Never the same.
In Berlin The daughter of an English lord, in love With Adolf Hitler, whom she has met.
She is taking Possession of the apartment of a couple, Elderly well-off Jews.
They survive the war To settle here in the Bay, the old lady Teaches piano, but the whole world swivels And gapes at their feet as the girl and a high-up Nazi Examine the furniture, the glass, the pictures, The elegant story that was theirs and now Is part of hers.
A few months later the English Enter the war and she shoots herself in a park, An addled, upper-class girl, her life that passes Into the lives of others or into a place.
The taking of lives--the Chief and Mrs.
W.
Took theirs to stay together, as local ghosts.
Last flurries of kisses, the revolver's barrel, Shivers of a story that a child might hear And half remember, voices in the rushes, A singing in the willows.
From across the river, Faint quavers of music, the same phrase twice and again, Ranging and building.
Over the high new bridge The flashing of traffic homeward from the racetrack, With one boat chugging under the arches, outward Unnoticed through Pleasure Bay to the open sea.
Here's where the people stood to watch the theater Burn on the water.
All that night the fireboats Kept playing their spouts of water into the blaze.
In the morning, smoking pilasters and beams.
Black smell of char for weeks, the ruin already Soaking back into the river.
After you die You hover near the ceiling above your body And watch the mourners awhile.
A few days more You float above the heads of the ones you knew And watch them through a twilight.
As it grows darker You wander off and find your way to the river And wade across.
On the other side, night air, Willows, the smell of the river, and a mass Of sleeping bodies all along the bank, A kind of singing from among the rushes Calling you further forward in the dark.
You lie down and embrace one body, the limbs Heavy with sleep reach eagerly up around you And you make love until your soul brims up And burns free out of you and shifts and spills Down over into that other body, and you Forget the life you had and begin again On the same crossing--maybe as a child who passes Through the same place.
But never the same way twice.
Here in the daylight, the catbird in the willows, The new café, with a terrace and a landing, Frogs in the cattails where the swing-bridge was-- Here's where you might have slipped across the water When you were only a presence, at Pleasure Bay.

Stamp Collector

 My worldly wealth I hoard in albums three,
My life collection of rare postage stamps;
My room is cold and bare as you can see,
My coat is old and shabby as a tramp's;
Yet more to me than balances in banks,
My albums three are worth a million francs.
I keep them in that box beside my bed, For who would dream such treasures it could hold; But every day I take them out and spread Each page, to gloat like miser o'er his gold: Dearer to me than could be child or wife, I would defend them with my very life.
They are my very life, for every night over my catalogues I pore and pore; I recognize rare items with delight, Nothing I read but philatelic lore; And when some specimen of choice I buy, In all the world there's none more glad than I.
Behold my gem, my British penny black; To pay its price I starved myself a year; And many a night my dinner I would lack, But when I bought it, oh, what radiant cheer! Hitler made war that day - I did not care, So long as my collection he would spare.
Look - my triangular Cape of Good Hope.
To purchase it I had to sell my car.
Now in my pocket for some sous I grope To pay my omnibus when home is far, And I am cold and hungry and footsore, In haste to add some beauty to my store.
This very day, ah, what a joy was mine, When in a dingy dealer's shop I found This franc vermillion, eighteen forty-nine .

How painfully my heart began to pound! (It's weak they say), I paid the modest price And tremblingly I vanished in a trice.
But oh, my dream is that some day of days, I might discover a Mauritius blue, poking among the stamp-bins of the quais; Who knows! They say there are but two; Yet if a third one I should spy, I think - God help me! I should faint and die.

Poor Monsieur Pns, he's cold and dead, One of those stamp-collecting cranks.
His garret held no crust of bread, But albums worth a million francs.
on them his income he would spend, By philatelic frenzy driven: What did it profit in the end.
