Mac Flecknoe

 All human things are subject to decay,
And, when Fate summons, monarchs must obey:
This Flecknoe found, who, like Augustus, young
Was call'd to empire, and had govern'd long:
In prose and verse, was own'd, without dispute
Through all the realms of Non-sense, absolute.
This aged prince now flourishing in peace, And blest with issue of a large increase, Worn out with business, did at length debate To settle the succession of the State: And pond'ring which of all his sons was fit To reign, and wage immortal war with wit; Cry'd, 'tis resolv'd; for nature pleads that he Should only rule, who most resembles me: Shadwell alone my perfect image bears, Mature in dullness from his tender years.
Shadwell alone, of all my sons, is he Who stands confirm'd in full stupidity.
The rest to some faint meaning make pretence, But Shadwell never deviates into sense.
Some beams of wit on other souls may fall, Strike through and make a lucid interval; But Shadwell's genuine night admits no ray, His rising fogs prevail upon the day: Besides his goodly fabric fills the eye, And seems design'd for thoughtless majesty: Thoughtless as monarch oaks, that shade the plain, And, spread in solemn state, supinely reign.
Heywood and Shirley were but types of thee, Thou last great prophet of tautology: Even I, a dunce of more renown than they, Was sent before but to prepare thy way; And coarsely clad in Norwich drugget came To teach the nations in thy greater name.
My warbling lute, the lute I whilom strung When to King John of Portugal I sung, Was but the prelude to that glorious day, When thou on silver Thames did'st cut thy way, With well tim'd oars before the royal barge, Swell'd with the pride of thy celestial charge; And big with hymn, commander of an host, The like was ne'er in Epsom blankets toss'd.
Methinks I see the new Arion sail, The lute still trembling underneath thy nail.

Here Flecknoe, as a place to fame well known, Ambitiously design'd his Shadwell's throne.
For ancient Decker prophesi'd long since, That in this pile should reign a mighty prince, Born for a scourge of wit, and flail of sense: To whom true dullness should some Psyches owe, But worlds of Misers from his pen should flow; Humorists and hypocrites it should produce, Whole Raymond families, and tribes of Bruce.
Now Empress Fame had publisht the renown, Of Shadwell's coronation through the town.
Rous'd by report of fame, the nations meet, From near Bun-Hill, and distant Watling-street.
No Persian carpets spread th'imperial way, But scatter'd limbs of mangled poets lay: From dusty shops neglected authors come, Martyrs of pies, and reliques of the bum.
Much Heywood, Shirley, Ogleby there lay, But loads of Shadwell almost chok'd the way.
Bilk'd stationers for yeoman stood prepar'd, And Herringman was Captain of the Guard.
The hoary prince in majesty appear'd, High on a throne of his own labours rear'd.
At his right hand our young Ascanius sat Rome's other hope, and pillar of the state.
His brows thick fogs, instead of glories, grace, And lambent dullness play'd around his face.
As Hannibal did to the altars come, Sworn by his sire a mortal foe to Rome; So Shadwell swore, nor should his vow be vain, That he till death true dullness would maintain; And in his father's right, and realm's defence, Ne'er to have peace with wit, nor truce with sense.

So Romulus, 'tis sung, by Tiber's brook, Presage of sway from twice six vultures took.
Th'admiring throng loud acclamations make, And omens of his future empire take.
The sire then shook the honours of his head, And from his brows damps of oblivion shed Full on the filial dullness: long he stood, Repelling from his breast the raging god; At length burst out in this prophetic mood: Heavens bless my son, from Ireland let him reign To far Barbadoes on the Western main; Of his dominion may no end be known, And greater than his father's be his throne.
Beyond love's kingdom let him stretch his pen; He paus'd, and all the people cry'd Amen.
Then thus, continu'd he, my son advance Still in new impudence, new ignorance.
Success let other teach, learn thou from me Pangs without birth, and fruitless industry.
Let Virtuosos in five years be writ; Yet not one thought accuse thy toil of wit.
Let gentle George in triumph tread the stage, Make Dorimant betray, and Loveit rage; Let Cully, Cockwood, Fopling, charm the pit, And in their folly show the writer's wit.

Let Father Flecknoe fire thy mind with praise, And Uncle Ogleby thy envy raise.
Thou art my blood, where Jonson has no part; What share have we in Nature or in Art? Where did his wit on learning fix a brand, And rail at arts he did not understand? Where made he love in Prince Nicander's vein, Or swept the dust in Psyche's humble strain? Where sold he bargains, whip-stitch, kiss my ****, Promis'd a play and dwindled to a farce? When did his muse from Fletcher scenes purloin, As thou whole Eth'ridge dost transfuse to thine? But so transfus'd as oil on waters flow, His always floats above, thine sinks below.
This is thy province, this thy wondrous way, New humours to invent for each new play: This is that boasted bias of thy mind, By which one way, to dullness, 'tis inclin'd, Which makes thy writings lean on one side still, And in all changes that way bends thy will.
Nor let thy mountain belly make pretence Of likeness; thine's a tympany of sense.
A tun of man in thy large bulk is writ, But sure thou 'rt but a kilderkin of wit.
Like mine thy gentle numbers feebly creep, Thy Tragic Muse gives smiles, thy Comic sleep.

The Santa-Fe Trail (A Humoresque)

 I asked the old *****, "What is that bird that sings so well?" He answered: "That is the Rachel-Jane.
" "Hasn't it another name, lark, or thrush, or the like?" "No.

IN WHICH A RACING AUTO COMES FROM THE EAST This is the order of the music of the morning: — First, from the far East comes but a crooning.
The crooning turns to a sunrise singing.
Hark to the calm -horn, balm -horn, psalm -horn.
Hark to the faint -horn, quaint -horn, saint -horn.

.
.
Hark to the pace -horn, chase -horn, race -horn.
And the holy veil of the dawn has gone.
Swiftly the brazen ear comes on.
It burns in the East as the sunrise burns.
I see great flashes where the far trail turns.
Its eyes are lamps like the eyes of dragons.
It drinks gasoline from big red flagons.
Butting through the delicate mists of the morning, It comes like lightning, goes past roaring.
It will hail all the wind-mills, taunting, ringing, Dodge the cyclones, Count the milestones, On through the ranges the prairie-dog tills— Scooting past the cattle on the thousand hills.

I am a tramp by the long trail's border, Given to squalor, rags and disorder.

I find in the stubble of the new-cut weeds A whisper and a feasting, all one needs: The whisper of the strawberries, white and red Here where the new-cut weeds lie dead.
But I would not walk all alone till I die Without some life-drunk horns going by.
Up round this apple-earth they come Blasting the whispers of the morning dumb:— Cars in a plain realistic row.
And fair dreams fade When the raw horns blow.

THE HAND-CARS WHIZ, AND RATTLE ON THE RAILS, THE SUNLIGHT FLASHES ON THE TIN DINNER-PAILS.
And then, in an instant, Ye modern men, Behold the procession once again, Listen to the iron-horns, ripping, racking, Listen to the wise -horn, desperate-to-advise horn, Listen to the fast -horn, kill -horn, blast -horn.

A Pindaric Ode

 THE TURN
Brave infant of Saguntum, clear
Thy coming forth in that great year,
When the prodigious Hannibal did crown
His rage with razing your immortal town.
Thou looking then about, Ere thou wert half got out, Wise child, didst hastily return, And mad'st thy mother's womb thine urn.
How summ'd a circle didst thou leave mankind Of deepest lore, could we the centre find! THE COUNTER-TURN Did wiser nature draw thee back, From out the horror of that sack; Where shame, faith, honour, and regard of right, Lay trampled on? The deeds of death and night Urg'd, hurried forth, and hurl'd Upon th' affrighted world; Sword, fire and famine with fell fury met, And all on utmost ruin set: As, could they but life's miseries foresee, No doubt all infants would return like thee.
THE STAND For what is life, if measur'd by the space, Not by the act? Or masked man, if valu'd by his face, Above his fact? Here's one outliv'd his peers And told forth fourscore years: He vexed time, and busied the whole state; Troubled both foes and friends; But ever to no ends: What did this stirrer but die late? How well at twenty had he fall'n or stood! For three of his four score he did no good.
THE TURN He enter'd well, by virtuous parts Got up, and thriv'd with honest arts; He purchas'd friends, and fame, and honours then, And had his noble name advanc'd with men; But weary of that flight, He stoop'd in all men's sight To sordid flatteries, acts of strife, And sunk in that dead sea of life, So deep, as he did then death's waters sup, But that the cork of title buoy'd him up.
THE COUNTER-TURN Alas, but Morison fell young! He never fell,--thou fall'st, my tongue.
He stood, a soldier to the last right end, A perfect patriot and a noble friend; But most, a virtuous son.
All offices were done By him, so ample, full, and round, In weight, in measure, number, sound, As, though his age imperfect might appear, His life was of humanity the sphere.
THE STAND Go now, and tell out days summ'd up with fears, And make them years; Produce thy mass of miseries on the stage, To swell thine age; Repeat of things a throng, To show thou hast been long, Not liv'd; for life doth her great actions spell, By what was done and wrought In season, and so brought To light: her measures are, how well Each syllabe answer'd, and was form'd, how fair; These make the lines of life, and that's her air.
THE TURN It is not growing like a tree In bulk, doth make men better be; Or standing long an oak, three hundred year, To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sear: A lily of a day Is fairer far, in May, Although it fall and die that night, It was the plant and flower of light.
In small proportions we just beauties see; And in short measures life may perfect be.

But fate doth so alternate the design, Whilst that in heav'n, this light on earth must shine.
THE TURN And shine as you exalted are; Two names of friendship, but one star: Of hearts the union, and those not by chance Made, or indenture, or leas'd out t' advance The profits for a time.
No pleasures vain did chime, Of rhymes, or riots, at your feasts, Orgies of drink, or feign'd protests; But simple love of greatness and of good, That knits brave minds and manners more than blood.
THE COUNTER-TURN This made you first to know the why You lik'd, then after, to apply That liking; and approach so one the t'other Till either grew a portion of the other; Each styled by his end, The copy of his friend.
You liv'd to be the great surnames And titles by which all made claims Unto the virtue: nothing perfect done, But as a Cary or a Morison.

To My Dear Friend Mr. Congreve On His Commedy Calld The Double Dealer

 Well then; the promis'd hour is come at last;
The present age of wit obscures the past:
Strong were our sires; and as they fought they writ,
Conqu'ring with force of arms, and dint of wit;
Theirs was the giant race, before the Flood;
And thus, when Charles return'd, our empire stood.
Like Janus he the stubborn soil manur'd, With rules of husbandry the rankness cur'd: Tam'd us to manners, when the stage was rude; And boisterous English wit, with art endu'd.
Our age was cultivated thus at length; But what we gained in skill we lost in strength.
Our builders were, with want of genius, curst; The second temple was not like the first: Till you, the best Vitruvius, come at length; Our beauties equal; but excel our strength.
Firm Doric pillars found your solid base: The fair Corinthian crowns the higher space; Thus all below is strength, and all above is grace.
In easy dialogue is Fletcher's praise: He mov'd the mind, but had not power to raise.
Great Jonson did by strength of judgment please: Yet doubling Fletcher's force, he wants his ease.
In differing talents both adorn'd their age; One for the study, t'other for the stage.
But both to Congreve justly shall submit, One match'd in judgment, both o'er-match'd in wit.
In him all beauties of this age we see; Etherege's courtship, Southern's purity; The satire, wit, and strength of manly Wycherly.
All this in blooming youth you have achiev'd; Nor are your foil'd contemporaries griev'd; So much the sweetness of your manners move, We cannot envy you because we love.
Fabius might joy in Scipio, when he saw A beardless Consul made against the law, And join his suffrage to the votes of Rome; Though he with Hannibal was overcome.
Thus old Romano bow'd to Raphael's fame; And scholar to the youth he taught, became.
Oh that your brows my laurel had sustain'd, Well had I been depos'd, if you had reign'd! The father had descended for the son; For only you are lineal to the throne.
Thus when the State one Edward did depose; A greater Edward in his room arose.
But now, not I, but poetry is curs'd; For Tom the second reigns like Tom the first.
But let 'em not mistake my patron's part; Nor call his charity their own desert.
Yet this I prophesy; thou shalt be seen, (Tho' with some short parenthesis between:) High on the throne of wit; and seated there, Not mine (that's little) but thy laurel wear.
Thy first attempt an early promise made; That early promise this has more than paid.
So bold, yet so judiciously you dare, That your least praise, is to be regular.
Time, place, and action, may with pains be wrought, But genius must be born; and never can be taught.
This is your portion; this your native store; Heav'n that but once was prodigal before, To Shakespeare gave as much; she could not give him more.
Maintain your post: that's all the fame you need; For 'tis impossible you should proceed.

An Island

 Take it away, and swallow it yourself.
Ha! Look you, there’s a rat.
Last night there were a dozen on that shelf, And two of them were living in my hat.
Look! Now he goes, but he’ll come back— Ha? But he will, I say … Il reviendra-z-à Pâques, Ou à la Trinité … Be very sure that he’ll return again; For said the Lord: Imprimis, we have rats, And having rats, we have rain.
— So on the seventh day He rested, and made Pain.
—Man, if you love the Lord, and if the Lord Love liars, I will have you at your word And swallow it.
Voilà.
Bah! Where do I say it is That I have lain so long? Where do I count myself among the dead, As once above the living and the strong? And what is this that comes and goes, Fades and swells and overflows, Like music underneath and overhead? What is it in me now that rings and roars Like fever-laden wine? What ruinous tavern-shine Is this that lights me far from worlds and wars And women that were mine? Where do I say it is That Time has made my bed? What lowering outland hostelry is this For one the stars have disinherited? And what is on me now that I should heed The durance or the silence or the scorn? I was the gardener who had the seed Which holds within its heart the food and fire That gives to man a glimpse of his desire; And I have tilled, indeed, Much land, where men may say that I have planted Unsparingly my corn— For a world harvest-haunted And for a world unborn.
Meanwhile, am I to view, as at a play, Through smoke the funeral flames of yesterday And think them far away? Am I to doubt and yet be given to know That where my demon guides me, there I go? An island? Be it so.

The Old Physician has a crimson cure For such as these, And ages after ages will endure The minims of it that are victories.

Cromwells Return

 An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return From Ireland

The forward youth that would appear 
Must now forsake his muses dear, 
Nor in the shadows sing, 
His numbers languishing.
'Tis time to leave the books in dust, And oil the unus?d armour's rust: Removing from the wall The corslet of the hall.
So restless Cromwell could not cease In the inglorious arts of peace, But through adventurous war Urg?d his active star.
And, like the three-forked lightning, first Breaking the clouds where it was nursed, Did thorough his own side His fiery way divide.
(For 'tis all one to courage high The emulous or enemy: And with such to inclose Is more than to oppose.
) Then burning through the air he went, And palaces and temples rent: And C?sar's head at last Did through his laurels blast.

The Ruins Of Time

I

I saw the musty shingles of my house,
raw wood and fixed once, now a wash of moss
eroded by the ruin of age
furning all fair and green things into waste.
I climbed the pasture.
I saw the dim sun drink the ice just thawing from the boldered fallow, woods crowd the foothills, sieze last summer's field, and higher up, the sickly cattle bellow.
I went into my house.
I saw how dust and ravel had devoured its furnishing; even my cane was withered and more bent, even my sword was coffined up in rust— there was no hilt left for the hand to try.
Everything ached, and told me I must die.
II You search in Rome for Rome? O Traveller! in Rome itself, there is no room for Rome, the Aventine is its own mound and tomb, only a corpse recieves the worshipper.
And where the Capitol once crowned the forum, are medals ruined by the hands of time; they show how more was lost by chance and time the Hannibal or Ceasar could consume.
The Tiber flows still, but its waste laments a city that has fallen in its grave— each wave's a woman beating at her breast.
O Rome! Form all you palms, dominion, bronze and beauty, what was firm has fled.
What once was fugitive maintains its permenance.

THE RETREAT FROM MOSCOW

 ("Il neigeait.") 
 
 {Bk. V. xiii., Nov. 25-30, 1852.} 


 It snowed. A defeat was our conquest red! 
 For once the eagle was hanging its head. 
 Sad days! the Emperor turned slowly his back 
 On smoking Moscow, blent orange and black. 
 The winter burst, avalanche-like, to reign 
 Over the endless blanched sheet of the plain. 
 Nor chief nor banner in order could keep, 
 The wolves of warfare were 'wildered like sheep. 
 The wings from centre could hardly be known 
 Through snow o'er horses and carts o'erthrown, 
 Where froze the wounded. In the bivouacs forlorn 
 Strange sights and gruesome met the breaking morn: 
 Mute were the bugles, while the men bestrode 
 Steeds turned to marble, unheeding the goad. 
 The shells and bullets came down with the snow 
 As though the heavens hated these poor troops below. 
 Surprised at trembling, though it was with cold, 
 Who ne'er had trembled out of fear, the veterans bold 
 Marched stern; to grizzled moustache hoarfrost clung 
 'Neath banners that in leaden masses hung. 
 
 It snowed, went snowing still. And chill the breeze 
 Whistled upon the glassy endless seas, 
 Where naked feet on, on for ever went, 
 With naught to eat, and not a sheltering tent. 
 They were not living troops as seen in war, 
 But merely phantoms of a dream, afar

 He, living oak, beheld his branches fall, with awe. 
 Chiefs, soldiers, comrades died. But still warm love 
 Kept those that rose all dastard fear above, 
 As on his tent they saw his shadow pass— 
 Backwards and forwards, for they credited, alas! 
 His fortune's star! it could not, could not be 
 That he had not his work to do—a destiny? 
 To hurl him headlong from his high estate, 
 Would be high treason in his bondman, Fate.

 What more was written on the Future's scroll?

 "Is this the vengeance? Must my glory set?" 
 A pause: his name was called; of flame a jet

 Outside still fell the smothering snow. 
 Was it a voice indeed? or but a dream? 
 It was the vulture's, but how like the sea-bird's scream.
