The Call Of The Wild

 Have you gazed on naked grandeur where there's nothing else to gaze on,
 Set pieces and drop-curtain scenes galore,
Big mountains heaved to heaven, which the blinding sunsets blazon,
 Black canyons where the rapids rip and roar?
Have you swept the visioned valley with the green stream streaking through it,
 Searched the Vastness for a something you have lost?
Have you strung your soul to silence? Then for God's sake go and do it;
 Hear the challenge, learn the lesson, pay the cost.
Have you wandered in the wilderness, the sagebrush desolation, The bunch-grass levels where the cattle graze? Have you whistled bits of rag-time at the end of all creation, And learned to know the desert's little ways? Have you camped upon the foothills, have you galloped o'er the ranges, Have you roamed the arid sun-lands through and through? Have you chummed up with the mesa? Do you know its moods and changes? Then listen to the Wild -- it's calling you.
Have you known the Great White Silence, not a snow-gemmed twig aquiver? (Eternal truths that shame our soothing lies.
) Have you broken trail on snowshoes? mushed your huskies up the river, Dared the unknown, led the way, and clutched the prize? Have you marked the map's void spaces, mingled with the mongrel races, Felt the savage strength of brute in every thew? And though grim as hell the worst is, can you round it off with curses? Then hearken to the Wild -- it's wanting you.
Have you suffered, starved and triumphed, groveled down, yet grasped at glory, Grown bigger in the bigness of the whole? "Done things" just for the doing, letting babblers tell the story, Seeing through the nice veneer the naked soul? Have you seen God in His splendors, heard the text that nature renders? (You'll never hear it in the family pew.
) The simple things, the true things, the silent men who do things -- Then listen to the Wild -- it's calling you.
They have cradled you in custom, they have primed you with their preaching, They have soaked you in convention through and through; They have put you in a showcase; you're a credit to their teaching -- But can't you hear the Wild? -- it's calling you.
Let us probe the silent places, let us seek what luck betide us; Let us journey to a lonely land I know.
There's a whisper on the night-wind, there's a star agleam to guide us, And the Wild is calling, calling .

Wilderness

 THERE is a wolf in me … fangs pointed for tearing gashes … a red tongue for raw meat … and the hot lapping of blood—I keep this wolf because the wilderness gave it to me and the wilderness will not let it go.
There is a fox in me … a silver-gray fox … I sniff and guess … I pick things out of the wind and air … I nose in the dark night and take sleepers and eat them and hide the feathers … I circle and loop and double-cross.
There is a hog in me … a snout and a belly … a machinery for eating and grunting … a machinery for sleeping satisfied in the sun—I got this too from the wilderness and the wilderness will not let it go.
There is a fish in me … I know I came from saltblue water-gates … I scurried with shoals of herring … I blew waterspouts with porpoises … before land was … before the water went down … before Noah … before the first chapter of Genesis.
There is a baboon in me … clambering-clawed … dog-faced … yawping a galoot’s hunger … hairy under the armpits … here are the hawk-eyed hankering men … here are the blond and blue-eyed women … here they hide curled asleep waiting … ready to snarl and kill … ready to sing and give milk … waiting—I keep the baboon because the wilderness says so.
There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird … and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want … and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.
O, I got a zoo, I got a menagerie, inside my ribs, under my bony head, under my red-valve heart—and I got something else: it is a man-child heart, a woman-child heart: it is a father and mother and lover: it came from God-Knows-Where: it is going to God-Knows-Where—For I am the keeper of the zoo: I say yes and no: I sing and kill and work: I am a pal of the world: I came from the wilderness.

The Explorer

 There's no sense in going further -- it's the edge of cultivation,"
 So they said, and I believed it -- broke my land and sowed my crop --
Built my barns and strung my fences in the little border station
 Tucked away below the foothills where the trails run out and stop.
Till a voice, as bad as Conscience, rang interminable changes On one everlasting Whisper day and night repeated -- so: "Something hidden.
Go and find it.
Go and look behind the Ranges -- "Something lost behind the Ranges.
Lost in wating for you.
Go!" So I went, worn out of patience; never told my nearest neighbours -- Stole away with pack and ponies -- left 'em drinking in the town; And the faith that moveth mountains didn't seem to help my labours As I faced the sheer main-ranges, whipping up and leading down.
March by march I puzzled through 'em, turning flanks and dodging shoulders, Hurried on in hope of water, headed back for lack of grass; Till I camped above the tree-line -- drifted snow and naked boulders -- Felt free air astir to windward -- knew I'd stumbled on the Pass.
'Thought to name it for the finder: but that night the Norther found me -- Froze and killed the plains-bred ponies; so I called the camp Despair (It's the Railway Gap to-day, though).
Then my Whisper waked to hound me: -- "Something lost behind the Ranges.
Over yonder! Go you there!" Then I knew, the while I doubted -- knew His Hand was certain o'er me.
Still -- it might be self-delusion -- scores of better men had died -- I could reach the township living, but.

He knows what terror tore me .

But I didn't .

but I didn't.
I went down the other side, Till the snow ran out in flowers, and the flowers turned to aloes, And the aloes sprung to thickets and a brimming stream ran by; But the thickets dwined to thorn-scrub, and the water drained to shallows, And I dropped again on desert -- blasterd earth, and blasting sky.

I remember lighting fires; I remember sitting by 'em; I remember seeing faces, hearing voices, through the smoke; I remember they were fancy -- for I threw a stone to try 'em.
"Something lost behind the Ranges" was the only word they spoke.
But at last the country altered -- White Man's country past disputing -- Rolling grass and open timber, with a hint of hills behind -- There I found me food and water, and I lay a week recruiting.
Got my strength and lost my nightmares.
Then I entered on my find.
Thence I ran my first rough survey -- chose my trees and blazed and ringed 'em -- Week by week I pried and smhampled -- week by week my findings grew.
Saul he went to look for donkeys, and by God he found a kingdom! But by God, who sent His Whisper, I had struck the worth of two! Up along the hostile mountains, where the hair-poised snowslide shivers -- Down and through the big fat marshes that the virgin ore-bed stains, Till I heard the mile-wide mutterings of unimagined rivers, And beyond the nameless timber saw illimitable plains! 'Plotted sites of future cities, traced the easy grades between 'em; Watched unharnessed rapids wasting fifty thousand head an hour; Counted leagues of water-frontage through the axe-ripe woods that screen 'em -- Saw the plant to feed a people -- up and waiting for the power! Well, I know who'll take the credit -- all the clever chaps that followed -- Came, a dozen men together -- never knew my desert-fears; Tracked me by the camps I'd quitted, used the water-holes I hollowed.
They'll go back and do the talking.
They'll be called the Pioneers! They will find my sites of townships -- not the cities that I set there.
They will rediscover rivers -- not my rivers heard at night.
By my own old marks and bearings they will show me how to get there, By the lonely cairns I builded they will guide my feet aright.
Have I named one single river? Have I claimed one single acre? Have I kept one single nugget -- (barring samples)? No, not I! Because my price was paid me ten times over by my Maker.
But you wouldn't understand it.
You go up and occupy.
Ores you'll find there; wood and cattle; water-transit sure and steady (That should keep the railway rates down), coal and iron at your doors.
God took care to hide that country till He judged His people ready, Then He chose me for His Whisper, and I've found it, and it's yours! Yes, your "Never-never country" -- yes, your "edge of cultivation" And "no sense in going further" -- till I crossed the range to see.
God forgive me! No, I didn't.
It's God's present to our nation.
Anybody might have found it but -- His Whisper came to Me!

Duino Elegies: The Tenth Elegy

 That some day, emerging at last from the terrifying vision
I may burst into jubilant praise to assenting angels!
That of the clear-struck keys of the heart not one may fail
to sound because of a loose, doubtful or broken string!
That my streaming countenance may make me more resplendent
That my humble weeping change into blossoms.
Oh, how will you then, nights of suffering, be remembered with love.
Why did I not kneel more fervently, disconsolate sisters, more bendingly kneel to receive you, more loosely surrender myself to your loosened hair? We, squanderers of gazing beyond them to judge the end of their duration.
They are only our winter's foliage, our sombre evergreen, one of the seasons of our interior year, -not only season, but place, settlement, camp, soil and dwelling.
How woeful, strange, are the alleys of the City of Pain, where in the false silence created from too much noise, a thing cast out from the mold of emptiness swaggers that gilded hubbub, the bursting memorial.
Oh, how completely an angel would stamp out their market of solace, bounded by the church, bought ready for use: as clean, disappointing and closed as a post office on Sunday.
Farther out, though, there are always the rippling edges of the fair.
Seasaws of freedom! High-divers and jugglers of zeal! And the shooting-gallery's targets of bedizened happiness: targets tumbling in tinny contortions whenever some better marksman happens to hit one.
From cheers to chance he goes staggering on, as booths that can please the most curious tastes are drumming and bawling.
For adults ony there is something special to see: how money multiplies.
Anatomy made amusing! Money's organs on view! Nothing concealed! Instructive, and guaranteed to increase fertility!.

Oh, and then outside, behind the farthest billboard, pasted with posters for 'Deathless,' that bitter beer tasting quite sweet to drinkers, if they chew fresh diversions with it.

Behind the billboard, just in back of it, life is real.
Children play, and lovers hold each other, -aside, earnestly, in the trampled grass, and dogs respond to nature.
The youth continues onward; perhaps he is in love with a young Lament.

he follows her into the meadows.
She says: the way is long.
We live out there.
.
.
.
Where? And the youth follows.
He is touched by her gentle bearing.
The shoulders, the neck, -perhaps she is of noble ancestry? Yet he leaves her, turns around, looks back and waves.

What could come of it? She is a Lament.
Only those who died young, in their first state of timeless serenity, while they are being weaned, follow her lovingly.
She waits for girls and befriends them.
Gently she shows them what she is wearing.
Pearls of grief and the fine-spun veils of patience.
- With youths she walks in silence.
But there, where they live, in the valley, an elderly Lament responds to the youth as he asks:- We were once, she says, a great race, we Laments.
Our fathers worked the mines up there in the mountains; sometimes among men you will find a piece of polished primeval pain, or a petrified slag from an ancient volcano.
Yes, that came from there.
Once we were rich.
- And she leads him gently through the vast landscape of Lamentation, shows him the columns of temples, the ruins of strongholds from which long ago the princes of Lament wisely governed the country.
Shows him the tall trees of tears, the fields of flowering sadness, (the living know them only as softest foliage); show him the beasts of mourning, grazing- and sometimes a startled bird, flying straight through their field of vision, far away traces the image of its solitary cry.
- At evening she leads him to the graves of elders of the race of Lamentation, the sybils and prophets.
With night approaching, they move more softly, and soon there looms ahead, bathed in moonlight, the sepulcher, that all-guarding ancient stone, Twin-brother to that on the Nile, the lofty Sphinx-: the silent chamber's countenance.
They marvel at the regal head that has, forever silent, laid the features of manking upon the scales of the stars.
His sight, still blinded by his early death, cannot grasp it.
But the Sphinx's gaze frightens an owl from the rim of the double-crown.
The bird, with slow down-strokes, brushes along the cheek, that with the roundest curve, and faintly inscribes on the new death-born hearing, as though on the double page of an opened book, the indescribable outline.
And higher up, the stars.
New ones.
Stars of the land of pain.
Slowly she names them: "There, look: the Rider ,the Staff,and that crowded constellation they call the the Garland of Fruit.
Then farther up toward the Pole: Cradle, Way, the Burning Book, Doll, Window.
And in the Southern sky, pure as lines on the palm of a blessed hand, the clear sparkling M, standing for Mothers.

" Yet the dead youth must go on alone.
In silence the elder Lament brings him as far as the gorge where it shimmers in the moonlight: The Foutainhead of Joy.
With reverance she names it, saying: "In the world of mankind it is a life-bearing stream.
" They reach the foothills of the mountain, and there she embraces him, weeping.
Alone, he climbs the mountains of primeval pain.
Not even his footsteps ring from this soundless fate.
But were these timeless dead to awaken an image for us, see, they might be pointing to th catkins, hanging from the leafless hazels, or else they might mean the rain that falls upon the dark earth in early Spring.
And we, who always think of happiness as rising feel the emotion that almost overwhelms us whenever a happy thing falls.

Antinous

 Stretched on a sunny bank he lay at rest, 
Ferns at his elbow, lilies round his knees, 
With sweet flesh patterned where the cool turf pressed, 
Flowerlike crept o'er with emerald aphides.
Single he couched there, to his circling flocks Piping at times some happy shepherd's tune, Nude, with the warm wind in his golden locks, And arched with the blue Asian afternoon.

Melpomene

 The forest bitter, spiky,
no shore breeze, no foothills,
the grass grows matted, death will come
with horses' hooves, endlessly
over the steppes' mounds, we went back,
searching the sky for the fort
that could not be razed.
The villages hostile, the cottages cleared out in haste, smoked skin on the attic beams, snare netting, bone amulets.
All over the country an evil reverence, animals' heads in the mist, divination by willow wands.
Later, up in the North, stag-eyed men rushed by on horseback.
We buried the dead.
It was hard to break the soil with our axes, fir had to thaw it out.
The blood of sacrificed cockerels was not accepted.

The Ruins Of Time

I

I saw the musty shingles of my house,
raw wood and fixed once, now a wash of moss
eroded by the ruin of age
furning all fair and green things into waste.
I climbed the pasture.
I saw the dim sun drink the ice just thawing from the boldered fallow, woods crowd the foothills, sieze last summer's field, and higher up, the sickly cattle bellow.
I went into my house.
I saw how dust and ravel had devoured its furnishing; even my cane was withered and more bent, even my sword was coffined up in rust— there was no hilt left for the hand to try.
Everything ached, and told me I must die.
II You search in Rome for Rome? O Traveller! in Rome itself, there is no room for Rome, the Aventine is its own mound and tomb, only a corpse recieves the worshipper.
And where the Capitol once crowned the forum, are medals ruined by the hands of time; they show how more was lost by chance and time the Hannibal or Ceasar could consume.
The Tiber flows still, but its waste laments a city that has fallen in its grave— each wave's a woman beating at her breast.
O Rome! Form all you palms, dominion, bronze and beauty, what was firm has fled.
What once was fugitive maintains its permenance.

On Kileys Run

 The roving breezes come and go 
On Kiley's Run, 
The sleepy river murmurs low, 
And far away one dimly sees 
Beyond the stretch of forest trees -- 
Beyond the foothills dusk and dun -- 
The ranges sleeping in the sun 
On Kiley's Run.
'Tis many years since first I came To Kiley's Run, More years than I would care to name Since I, a stripling, used to ride For miles and miles at Kiley's side, The while in stirring tones he told The stories of the days of old On Kiley's Run.
I see the old bush homestead now On Kiley's Run, Just nestled down beneath the brow Of one small ridge above the sweep Of river-flat, where willows weep And jasmine flowers and roses bloom, The air was laden with perfume On Kiley's Run.
We lived the good old station life On Kiley's Run, With little thought of care or strife.
Old Kiley seldom used to roam, He liked to make the Run his home, The swagman never turned away With empty hand at close of day From Kiley's Run.
We kept a racehorse now and then On Kiley's Run, And neighb'ring stations brought their men To meetings where the sport was free, And dainty ladies came to see Their champions ride; with laugh and song The old house rang the whole night long On Kiley's Run.
The station hands were friends I wot On Kiley's Run, A reckless, merry-hearted lot -- All splendid riders, and they knew The `boss' was kindness through and through.
Old Kiley always stood their friend, And so they served him to the end On Kiley's Run.
But droughts and losses came apace To Kiley's Run, Till ruin stared him in the face; He toiled and toiled while lived the light, He dreamed of overdrafts at night: At length, because he could not pay, His bankers took the stock away From Kiley's Run.
Old Kiley stood and saw them go From Kiley's Run.
The well-bred cattle marching slow; His stockmen, mates for many a day, They wrung his hand and went away.
Too old to make another start, Old Kiley died -- of broken heart, On Kiley's Run.

The owner lives in England now Of Kiley's Run.
He knows a racehorse from a cow; But that is all he knows of stock: His chiefest care is how to dock Expenses, and he sends from town To cut the shearers' wages down On Kiley's Run.
There are no neighbours anywhere Near Kiley's Run.
The hospitable homes are bare, The gardens gone; for no pretence Must hinder cutting down expense: The homestead that we held so dear Contains a half-paid overseer On Kiley's Run.
All life and sport and hope have died On Kiley's Run.
No longer there the stockmen ride; For sour-faced boundary riders creep On mongrel horses after sheep, Through ranges where, at racing speed, Old Kiley used to `wheel the lead' On Kiley's Run.
There runs a lane for thirty miles Through Kiley's Run.
On either side the herbage smiles, But wretched trav'lling sheep must pass Without a drink or blade of grass Thro' that long lane of death and shame: The weary drovers curse the name Of Kiley's Run.
The name itself is changed of late Of Kiley's Run.
They call it `Chandos Park Estate'.
The lonely swagman through the dark Must hump his swag past Chandos Park.
The name is English, don't you see, The old name sweeter sounds to me Of `Kiley's Run'.
I cannot guess what fate will bring To Kiley's Run -- For chances come and changes ring -- I scarcely think 'twill always be Locked up to suit an absentee; And if he lets it out in farms His tenants soon will carry arms On Kiley's Run.

Tell

 He opens the scullery door, and a sudden rush
of wind, as raw as raw,
brushes past him as he himself will brush
past the stacks of straw

that stood in earlier for Crow
or Comanche tepees hung with scalps
but tonight past muster, row upon row,
for the foothills of the Alps.
He opens the door of the peeling-shed just as one of the apple-peelers (one of almost a score of red-cheeked men who pare and core the red-cheeked apples for a few spare shillings) mutters something about "bloodshed" and the "peelers.
" The red-cheeked men put down their knives at one and the same moment.
All but his father, who somehow connives to close one eye as if taking aim or holding back a tear, and shoots him a glance he might take, as it whizzes past his ear, for a Crow, or a Comanche, lance hurled through the Tilley-lit gloom of the peeling-shed, when he hears what must be an apple split above his head.

The Road to Old Mans Town

 The fields of youth are filled with flowers, 
The wine of youth is strong: 
What need have we to count the hours? 
The summer days are long.
But soon we find to our dismay That we are drifting down The barren slopes that fall away Towards the foothills grim and grey That lead to Old Man's Town.
And marching with us on the track Full many friends we find: We see them looking sadly back For those who've dropped behind But God forfend a fate so dread -- Alone to travel down The dreary road we all must tread, With faltering steps and whitening head, The road to Old Man's Town!
