An Elegy upon the Death of the Dean of St. Pauls Dr. John

 Can we not force from widow'd poetry, 
Now thou art dead (great Donne) one elegy 
To crown thy hearse? Why yet dare we not trust, 
Though with unkneaded dough-bak'd prose, thy dust, 
Such as th' unscissor'd churchman from the flower 
Of fading rhetoric, short-liv'd as his hour, 
Dry as the sand that measures it, should lay 
Upon thy ashes, on the funeral day? 
Have we no voice, no tune? Didst thou dispense 
Through all our language, both the words and sense? 
'Tis a sad truth.
The pulpit may her plain And sober Christian precepts still retain, Doctrines it may, and wholesome uses, frame, Grave homilies and lectures, but the flame Of thy brave soul (that shot such heat and light As burnt our earth and made our darkness bright, Committed holy rapes upon our will, Did through the eye the melting heart distil, And the deep knowledge of dark truths so teach As sense might judge what fancy could not reach) Must be desir'd forever.

Thou shalt yield no precedence, but of time, And the blind fate of language, whose tun'd chime More charms the outward sense; yet thou mayst claim From so great disadvantage greater fame, Since to the awe of thy imperious wit Our stubborn language bends, made only fit With her tough thick-ribb'd hoops to gird about Thy giant fancy, which had prov'd too stout For their soft melting phrases.

So doth the swiftly turning wheel not stand In th' instant we withdraw the moving hand, But some small time maintain a faint weak course, By virtue of the first impulsive force; And so, whilst I cast on thy funeral pile Thy crown of bays, oh, let it crack awhile, And spit disdain, till the devouring flashes Suck all the moisture up, then turn to ashes.
I will not draw the envy to engross All thy perfections, or weep all our loss; Those are too numerous for an elegy, And this too great to be express'd by me.
Though every pen should share a distinct part, Yet art thou theme enough to tire all art; Let others carve the rest, it shall suffice I on thy tomb this epitaph incise: Here lies a king, that rul'd as he thought fit The universal monarchy of wit; Here lie two flamens, and both those, the best, Apollo's first, at last, the true God's priest.

Two Songs

 1.
Sex, as they harshly call it, I fell into this morning at ten o'clock, a drizzling hour of traffic and wet newspapers.
I thought of him who yesterday clearly didn't turn me to a hot field ready for plowing, and longing for that young man pierced me to the roots bathing every vein, etc.
All day he appears to me touchingly desirable, a prize one could wreck one's peace for.
I'd call it love if love didn't take so many years but lust too is a jewel a sweet flower and what pure happiness to know all our high-toned questions breed in a lively animal.
2.
That "old last act"! And yet sometimes all seems post coitum triste and I a mere bystander.
Somebody else is going off, getting shot to the moon.
Or a moon-race! Split seconds after my opposite number lands I make it-- we lie fainting together at a crater-edge heavy as mercury in our moonsuits till he speaks-- in a different language yet one I've picked up through cultural exchanges.

Blinks through Blood-shot Walks

When at five-thirty
In the rubbed-eye haziness
Of ferreting lonesome night walks
The camera-eye refugee
Asleep in the half awakefulness
Of the hour
Peers out of his high turbanned sockets:
Hyde Park's through road links
London's diurnally estranged couple -
The Arch and Gate.
When at five-thirty The foot falls gently Of the vision cut in dark recesses And the man, finger gingerly on the fly Gapes dolefully about For a while Exchanges a casual passing word Standing in the Rembrandtesque clefts And the multipled ma'm'selle trips out: Neat and slick.
They say you meet the girls at parties And get deeper than swine in orgies.
When at five-thirty The fisherman's chilled chips Lie soggy and heeled under the Arch Where patchy transparent wrappers cling To slippery hands jingling the inexact change That mounted the trustful fisherman's credit: The stub legged fisher of diplomat And cool cat And the prostitutes' confidant; Each shivering pimp's warming pan.
Then at five-thirty The bowels of Hyde Park Improperly growled and shunted And shook the half-night-long Lazily swaggering double deckers, Suddenly as in a rude recollection, To break and pull, grind and swing away And around, drawing the knotting air after Curling and unfurling on the pavements.
And at five-thirty The prostrate mindful old refugee Dares not stir Nor cares to wake and swallow The precisely half-downed bottle Of Coke clinging to the pearly dew Nor lick the clasp knife clean Lying bare by a tin of' skewed top Corned beef, incisively culled Look! that garden all spruced up An incongruous lot of hair on that bald pate No soul stirs in there but the foul air No parking alongside but from eight to eight.
Learning so hard and late No time to scratch the bald pate.
At five-thirty-one A minute just gone The thud is on, the sledge-hammer yawns And in the back of ears, strange noises As from afar and a million feet tramp.
One infinitesimal particle knocks another And the whirl begins in a silent rage And the human heart beats harder While in and around, this London This atomic mammoth roams In the wastes of wars and tumbling empires.

 All that I had I brought,

The Mylora Elopement

 By the winding Wollondilly where the weeping willows weep, 
And the shepherd, with his billy, half awake and half asleep, 
Folds his fleecy flocks that linger homewards in the setting sun 
Lived my hero, Jim the Ringer, "cocky" on Mylora Run.
Jimmy loved the super's daughter, Miss Amelia Jane McGrath.
Long and earnestly he sought her, but he feared her stern papa; And Amelia loved him truly -- but the course of love, if true, Never yet ran smooth or duly, as I think it ought to do.
Pondering o'er his predilection, Jimmy watched McGrath, the boss, Riding past his lone selection, looking for a station 'oss That was running in the ranges with a mob of outlaws wild.
Mac the time of day exchanges -- off goes Jim to see his child; Says, "The old man's after Stager, which he'll find is no light job, And tomorrow I will wager he will try and yard the mob.
Will you come with me tomorrow? I will let the parson know, And for ever, joy or sorrow, he will join us here below.
"I will bring the nags so speedy, Crazy Jane and Tambourine, One more kiss -- don't think I'm greedy -- good-bye, lass, before I'm seen -- Just one more -- God bless you, dearie! Don't forget to meet me here, Life without you is but weary; now, once more, good-bye, my dear.
" * * * * * The daylight shines on figures twain That ride across Mylora Plain, Laughing and talking -- Jim and Jane.
"Steady, darling.
There's lots of time, Didn't we slip the old man prime! I knew he'd tackle that Bowneck mob, I reckon he'll find it too big a job.
They've beaten us all.
I had a try, But the warrigal devils seem to fly.
That Sambo's a real good but of stuff No doubt, but not quite good enough.
He'll have to gallop the livelong day, To cut and come, to race and stay.
I hope he yards 'em, 'twill do him good; To see us going I don't think would.
" A turn in the road and, fair and square, They meet the old man standing there.
"What's up?" "Why, running away, of course," Says Jim, emboldened.
The old man turned, His eye with wild excitement burned.
"I've raced all day through the scorching heat After old Bowneck: and now I'm beat.
But over that range I think you'll find The Bowneck mob all run stone-blind.
Will you go, and leave the mob behind? Which will you do? Take the girl away, Or ride like a white man should today, And yard old Bowneck? Go or stay?" Says Jim, "I can't throw this away, We can bolt some other day, of course -- Amelia Jane, get off that horse! Up you get, Old Man.
Whoop, halloo! Here goes to put old Bowneck through!" Two distant specks om the mountain side, Two stockwhips echoing far and wide.

Amelia Jane sat down and cried.
* * * * * "Sakes, Amelia, what's up now? Leading old Sambo, too, I vow, And him deadbeat.
Where have you been? 'Bolted with Jim!' What do you mean> 'Met the old man with Sambo, licked From running old Bowneck.
' Well, I'm kicked -- 'Ran 'em till Sambo nearly dropped?' What did Jim do when you were stopped? Did you bolt from father across the plain? 'Jim made you get off Crazy Jane! And father got on, and away again The two of 'em went to the ranges grim.
' Good boy, Jimmy! Oh, well done, Jim! They're sure to get them now, of course, That Tambourine is a spanking horse.
And Crazy Jane is good as gold.
And Jim, they say, rides pretty bold -- Not like your father, but very fair.
Jim will have to follow the mare.
" "It never was yet in father's hide To best my Jim on the mountain side.
Jim can rally, and Jim can ride.
" But here again Amelia cried.
* * * * * The sound of whip comes faint and far, A rattle of hoofs, and here they are, In all their tameless pride.
The fleet wild horses snort and fear, And wheel and break as the yard draws near.
Now, Jim the Ringer, ride! Wheel 'em! wheel 'em! Whoa back there, whoa! And the foam flakes fly like the driven snow, As under the whip the horses go Adown the mountain side.
And Jim, hands down, and teeth firm set, On a horse that never has failed him yet, Is after them down the range.
Well ridden! well ridden! they wheel -- whoa back! And long and loud the stockwhips crack, Their flying course they change; "Steadily does it -- let Sambo go! Open those sliprails down below.
Smart! or you'll be too late.
* * * * * "They'll follow old Sambo up -- look out! Whee! that black horse -- give Sam a clout.
They're in! Make fast the gate.
" * * * * * The mob is safely in the yard! The old man mounts delighted guard.
No thought has he but for his prize.
* * * * * Jim catches poor Amelia's eyes.
"Will you come after all? The job is done, And Crazy Jane is fit to run For a prince's life -- now don't say no; Slip on while the old man's down below At the inner yard, and away we'll go.
Will you come, my girl?" "I will, you bet; We'll manage this here elopement yet.
" * * * * * By the winding Wollondilly stands the hut of Ringer Jim.
And his loving little Meely makes a perfect god of him.
He has stalwart sons and daughters, and, I think, before he's done, There'll be numerous "Six-fortys" taken on Mylora Run.

CHRISTEL

 My senses ofttimes are oppress'd,

Oft stagnant is my blood;
But when by Christel's sight I'm blest,

I feel my strength renew'd.
I see her here, I see her there, And really cannot tell The manner how, the when, the where, The why I love her well.
If with the merest glance I view Her black and roguish eyes, And gaze on her black eyebrows too, My spirit upward flies.
Has any one a mouth so sweet, Such love-round cheeks as she? Ah, when the eye her beauties meet, It ne'er content can be.
And when in airy German dance I clasp her form divine, So quick we whirl, so quick advance, What rapture then like mine! And when she's giddy, and feels warm, I cradle her, poor thing, Upon my breast, and in mine arm,-- I'm then a very king! And when she looks with love on me, Forgetting all but this, When press'd against my bosom, she Exchanges kiss for kiss, All through my marrow runs a thrill, Runs e'en my foot along! I feel so well, I feel so ill, I feel so weak, so strong! Would that such moments ne'er would end! The day ne'er long I find; Could I the night too with her spend, E'en that I should not mind.
If she were in mine arms but held, To quench love's thirst I'd try; And could my torments not be quell'd, Upon her breast would die.

Come-by-Chance

 As I pondered very weary o'er a volume long and dreary -- 
For the plot was void of interest; 'twas the Postal Guide, in fact -- 
There I learnt the true location, distance, size and population 
Of each township, town, and village in the radius of the Act.
And I learnt that Puckawidgee stands beside the Murrumbidgee, And the Booleroi and Bumble get their letters twice a year, Also that the post inspector, when he visited Collector, Closed the office up instanter, and re-opened Dungalear.
But my languid mood forsook me, when I found a name that took me; Quite by chance I came across it -- "Come-by-Chance" was what I read; No location was assigned it, not a thing to help one find it, Just an N which stood for northward, and the rest was all unsaid.
I shall leave my home, and forthward wander stoutly to the northward Till I come by chance across it, and I'll straightway settle down; For there can't be any hurry, nor the slightest cause for worry Where the telegraph don't reach you nor the railways run to town.
And one's letters and exchanges come by chance across the ranges, Where a wiry young Australian leads a packhorse once a week, And the good news grows by keeping, and you're spared the pain of weeping Over bad news when the mailman drops the letters in a creek.
But I fear, and more's the pity, that there's really no such city, For there's not a man can find it of the shrewdest folk I know; "Come-by-Chance", be sure it never means a land of fierce endeavour -- It is just the careless country where the dreamers only go.
* * * * * * * Though we work and toil and hustle in our life of haste and bustle, All that makes our life worth living comes unstriven for and free; Man may weary and importune, but the fickle goddess Fortune Deals him out his pain or pleasure, careless what his worth may be.
All the happy times entrancing, days of sport and nights of dancing, Moonlit rides and stolen kisses, pouting lips and loving glance: When you think of these be certain you have looked behind the curtain, You have had the luck to linger just a while in "Come-by-Chance".

The Old Bark School

 It was built of bark and poles, and the floor was full of holes 
Where each leak in rainy weather made a pool; 
And the walls were mostly cracks lined with calico and sacks – 
There was little need for windows in the school.
Then we rode to school and back by the rugged gully-track, On the old grey horse that carried three or four; And he looked so very wise that he lit the master's eyes Every time he put his head in at the door.
He had run with Cobb and Co.
– "that grey leader, let him go!" There were men "as knowed the brand upon his hide", And "as knowed it on the course".
Funeral service: "Good old horse!" When we burnt him in the gully where he died.
And the master thought the same.
'Twas from Ireland that he came, Where the tanks are full all summer, and the feed is simply grand; And the joker then in vogue said his lessons wid a brogue – 'Twas unconscious imitation, let the reader understand.
And we learnt the world in scraps from some ancient dingy maps Long discarded by the public-schools in town; And as nearly every book dated back to Captain Cook Our geography was somewhat upside-down.
It was "in the book" and so – well, at that we'd let it go, For we never would believe that print could lie; And we all learnt pretty soon that when we came out at noon "The sun is in the south part of the sky.
" And Ireland! that was known from the coast-line to Athlone: We got little information re the land that gave us birth; Save that Captain Cook was killed (and was very likely grilled) And "the natives of New Holland are the lowest race on earth".
And a woodcut, in its place, of the same degraded race Seemed a lot more like a camel than the blackfellows that we knew; Jimmy Bullock, with the rest, scratched his head and gave it best; But his faith was sadly shaken by a bobtailed kangaroo.
But the old bark school is gone, and the spot it stood upon Is a cattle-camp in winter where the curlew's cry is heard; There's a brick school on the flat, but a schoolmate teaches that, For, about the time they built it, our old master was "transferred".
But the bark school comes again with exchanges 'cross the plain – With the Out-Back Advertiser; and my fancy roams at large When I read of passing stock, of a western mob or flock, With "James Bullock", "Grey", or "Henry Dale" in charge.
And I think how Jimmy went from the old bark school content, With his "eddication" finished, with his pack-horse after him; And perhaps if I were back I would take the self-same track, For I wish my learning ended when the Master "finished" Jim.
